The entropy evaluation method of assembly stress has become a hot topic in recent years. However, the current research can only evaluate the maximum stress magnitude and stress magnitude uniformity, and it cannot evaluate the stress position distribution. In this paper, an evaluation method of stress distribution characterized by strain energy density distribution is proposed. In this method, the relative entropy is used as the evaluation index of the stress distribution difference between the error model and the ideal model. It can evaluate not only the stress magnitude, but also the stress position. On this basis, an optimization method of the precise assembly process which takes the relative entropy as the optimization objective is proposed. The stress distributions of the optical lens are evaluated, and the assembly angle of the spacer in the process of the optical lens system assembly is optimized. By comparing the stress distribution of the optimized model and the ideal model, the validity of this method is proved.

Abstract This paper proposes a design optimization method consisting of the multiphase structural modeling of ideal, intermediate, and detailed models for machine structures. In this method, the ideal characteristics are first obtained for a specific ideal model. Then, the detailed designs are determined so that the characteristics in the detailed model are as close to the ideal characteristics as possible. For easily and surely obtaining the final detailed designs, an intermediate model is introduced between the ideal model and the detailed model. This method not only effectively generates optimum detailed designs of machine structures but also brings about an easy realization of the optimum characteristics in practical manufactured machine products. The proposed method is applied to a machine-tool structural model for demonstrating the effectiveness of the method.

The ranking of decision-making units (DMUs) is one of the most significant issues in efficiency evaluation. However, the calculation results from the traditional DEA method sometimes include multiple efficient DMUs or multiple DMUs with the same efficiency value, in which case the approach is weak in distinguishing among these DMUs. Therefore, this study proposes a DEA cross-efficiency ranking method based on the relative entropy evaluation method and the grey relational analysis method. First, the approach uses the cross-efficiency matrix as the decision matrix of multiple criteria decision-making (MCDM), and the relationship between DMU and the ideal solution is analyzed by the grey relational analysis method and the relative entropy evaluation method. Then, the degree of the criteria is determined by Shannon entropy, and the weighted grey correlation degree and the weighted relative entropy are obtained. Finally, with the comprehensive relative closeness degree between the DMU and the ideal solution, we can sort all the DMUs accordingly. In a comparative analysis, it shows that this method analyzes the similarity between DMUs and the ideal solution from the information distance and the similarity of the data sequence curve, and has certain advantages for analyzing the ranking of DMUs.

Chapter 9 is concerned with social and political behavior. Even in the context of moral philosophy, Jewish philosophers discuss issues within the wider context of a rational scientific perspective. This chapter begins with specific moral codes developed by Jewish thinkers, focusing in particular upon the works of Ibn Gabirol, Baḥya ibn Paquda, Maimonides, and Crescas. Can there be ethical dictates independent of the commandments? The rabbis already worried whether there existed a domain of “right behavior” that pre-dates, or exists independently of, divine commandment. Does Aristotle’s doctrine of the mean apply to divine law? Furthermore, can all humans achieve intellectual perfection? Is the road the same, and open, to all? And is there only one road to ultimate felicity, or are there many routes? The chapter ends with a discussion of whether human felicity can be achieved in this life, and whether the prophet best represents the ideal model for such achievement.

This paper aims to identify the challenges in the implementation of shared decision-making (SDM) when the doctor and the patient have a difference of opinion. It analyses the preconditions of the resolution of this difference of opinion by using an analytical and normative framework known in the field of argumentation theory as the ideal model of critical discussion. This analysis highlights the communication skills and attitudes that both doctors and patients must apply in a dispute resolution-oriented communication. Questions arise over the methods of empowerment of doctors and patients in these skills and attitudes as the preconditions of SDM. Overall, the paper highlights aspects in which research is needed to design appropriate programmes of training, education and support in order to equip doctors and patients with the means to successfully engage in shared decision-making.

The present work focuses on the aerodynamic problems resulting from a high-speed train (HST) passing through a tunnel. Numerical simulations were employed to obtain the numerical results, and they were verified by a moving-model test. Two responses, [Formula: see text] (coefficient of the peak-to-peak pressure of a single fluctuation) and[Formula: see text] (pressure value of micro-pressure wave), were studied with regard to the three building parameters of the portal-hat buffer structure of the tunnel entrance and exit. The MOPSO (multi-objective particle swarm optimization) method was employed to solve the optimization problem in order to find the minimum [Formula: see text] and[Formula: see text]. Results showed that the effects of the three design parameters on [Formula: see text] were not monotonous, and the influences of[Formula: see text] (the oblique angle of the portal) and [Formula: see text] (the height of the hat structure) were more significant than that of[Formula: see text] (the angle between the vertical line of the portal and the hat). Monotonically decreasing responses were found in [Formula: see text] for [Formula: see text] and[Formula: see text]. The Pareto front of [Formula: see text] and[Formula: see text]was obtained. The ideal single-objective optimums for each response located at the ends of the Pareto front had values of 1.0560 for [Formula: see text] and 101.8 Pa for[Formula: see text].

The difficulty of achieving good distal contact between a cementless hip endoprosthesis and the femur is well established. This finite element study investigates the effect on the stress distribution within the femur due to varying lengths of distal gap. Three-dimensional anatomical models of two different sized femurs were generated, based upon computer tomograph scans of two cadaveric specimens. A further six models were derived from each original model, with distal gaps varying from 10 to 60 mm in length. The resulting stress distributions within these were compared to the uniform contact models. The extent to which femoral geometry was an influencing factor on the stress distribution within the bone was also studied. Lack of distal contact with the prosthesis was found not to affect the proximal stress distribution within the femur, for distal gap lengths of up to 60 mm. In the region of no distal contact, the stress within the femur was at normal physiological levels associated with the applied loading and boundary conditions. The femoral geometry was found to have little influence on the stress distribution within the cortical bone. Although localized variations were noted, both femurs exhibited the same general stress distribution pattern.

Fermentation system is widely used for food manufacturing, materials processing and chemical reaction etc. Different types of blade in the tank for fermentation cause distinct stress distributions on the surface between fluid and blade, and appear various flow fields in the tank. So, this paper is mainly focused on analyzing the stress field of blades under different scales of blade with fixing rotational speed. The results show that the ratio of blade length to width influences stress distribution on the blades. At the same time, the inclined angle of blade is also the key parameter for the consideration of design and appropriate design will decrease the maximum stress. The results provide an effective means of gaining insights into the stress distribution of fermentation system.

Cable-stayed and extra-dosed bridges are today widely used bridge types. Recently, saddles have been used to deviate strands of cables in the pylons. Up to now the mechanics of strands on saddles are not well understood. It was found, that typical longitudinal contact stress distributions between strand and saddle show a strong nonlinearity and a high peak value around the detachment point, where the strand meets the saddle. This paper presents a procedure to analyse the longitudinal contact stress distribution obtained by FEM calculations: This contact stress can be idealised as a constant contact stress according to the Barlow's formula and a contact force at the detachment point due to the flexural rigidity of the bent tension elements. An analytical model is provided to verify this contact force. Finally, a formula is presented to calculate the maximum contact stress. This study provides the basis for further research on saddle design and fatigue of strands.

The author examines the “In Thee rejoiceth” icons as visual sources that make it possible to reconstruct the ideal model of medieval society in the Moscow culture of the late 15th and early 16th centuries. This icon type, which includes the scenes of “Human race” collective praying to the Mother of God, is of Russian origin. Unlike other works of that time typologically close to it (“The Intercession”, “The Congregation of Our Lady”, “The Congregation of All Saints”, etc.), the “In Thee rejoiceth” icons demonstrate a historical connection to religious and socio-cultural facts of the Muscovy state. They clearly express the idea of Muscovy enjoying special patronage of the Mother of God, whose cult was actively developed in Moscow, the city that, as was believed at the Grand Dukes’ court, inherited the traditions and the spiritual authority of Constantinople. The depiction of the “Human race” in the “In Thee rejoiceth” icons can be viewed as a metaphorical image of the capital city community consisting of different groups of clergy and laity. This image corresponded to the ideas of the authorities and the population of the Russian state that existed under Ivan III and Vasili III.
