Rotor is a widely used and easily defected mechanical component. Thus, it is significant to develop effective techniques for rotor fault diagnosis. Fault signature extraction and state classification of the extracted signatures are two key steps for diagnosing rotor faults. To complete the accurate recognition of rotor states, a novel evaluation index named characteristic frequency band energy entropy (CFBEE) was proposed to extract the defective features of rotors, and support vector machine (SVM) was employed to automatically identify the rotor fault types. Specifically, the raw vibration signal of rotor was first analyzed by a joint time–frequency method based on improved singular spectrum decomposition (ISSD) and Hilbert transform (HT) to derive its time–frequency spectrum (TFS), which is named ISSD-HT TFS in this paper. Then, the CFBEE of the ISSD-HT TFS was calculated as the fault feature vector. Finally, SVM was used to complete the automatic identification of rotor faults. Simulated processing results indicate that ISSD improves the end effects of singular spectrum decomposition (SSD) and is superior to empirical mode decomposition (EMD) in extracting the sub-components of rotor vibration signal. The ISSD-HT TFS can more accurately reflect the time–frequency information compared to the EMD-HT TFS. Experimental verification demonstrates that the proposed method can accurately identify rotor defect types and outperform some other methods.

Due to the difficulty that excessive feature dimension in fault diagnosis of rolling bearing will lead to the decrease of classification accuracy, a fault diagnosis method based on Xgboost algorithm feature extraction is proposed. When the Xgboost algorithm classifies features, it generates an order of importance of the input features. The time domain features were extracted from the vibration signal of the rolling bearing, the time-frequency features were formed by the singular value of the modal components that were decomposed by the variational mode decomposition. Firstly, the extracted time domain and time-frequency domain features were input into the support vector machine respectively to observe the fault diagnosis accuracy. Then, Xgboost algorithm was used to rank the importance of features and got the accuracy of fault diagnosis. Finally, important features were extracted and the extracted features were input into the support vector machine to observe the fault diagnosis accuracy. The result shows that the fault diagnosis accuracy of rolling bearing is improved after important feature extraction in time domain and time-frequency domain by Xgboost.

During the operation process of the high voltage circuit breaker, the changes of vibration signals can reflect the machinery states of the circuit breaker. The extraction of the vibration signal feature will directly influence the accuracy and practicability of fault diagnosis. This paper presents an extraction method based on ensemble empirical mode decomposition (EEMD). Firstly, the original vibration signals are decomposed into a finite number of stationary intrinsic mode functions (IMFs). Secondly, calculating the envelope of each IMF and separating the envelope by equal-time segment and then forming equal-time segment energy entropy to reflect the change of vibration signal are performed. At last, the energy entropies could serve as input vectors of support vector machine (SVM) to identify the working state and fault pattern of the circuit breaker. Practical examples show that this diagnosis approach can identify effectively fault patterns of HV circuit breaker.

During the operation process of a gearbox, the vibration signals can reflect the dynamic states of the gearbox. The feature extraction of the vibration signal will directly influence the accuracy and effectiveness of fault diagnosis. One major challenge associated with the extraction process is the mode mixing, especially under such circumstance of intensive frequency. A novel fault diagnosis method based on frequency-modulated empirical mode decomposition is proposed in this paper. Firstly, several stationary intrinsic mode functions can be obtained after the initial vibration signal is processed using frequency-modulated empirical mode decomposition method. Using the method, the vibration signal feature can be extracted in unworkable region of the empirical mode decomposition. The method has the ability to separate such close frequency components, which overcomes the major drawback of the conventional methods. Numerical simulation results showed the validity of the developed signal processing method. Secondly, energy entropy was calculated to reflect the changes in vibration signals in relation to faults. At last, the energy distribution could serve as eigenvector of support vector machine to recognize the dynamic state and fault type of the gearbox. The analysis results from the gearbox signals demonstrate the effectiveness and veracity of the diagnosis approach.

This paper studies the roller bearing fault diagnosis method with harmonic wavelet packet and Decision Tree-Support Vector Machine (DT-SVM). The harmonic wavelet packet possesses better performances for its box-shaped spectrum and unlimited subdivision compared with the conventional time-frequency feature exaction method. Firstly, the proposed method decomposes the roller bearing vibration signal with harmonic wavelet packet and extracts the feature energy with coefficients of each spectrum. After the feature energy is normalized, feature vector are available. Based on multi-level binary tree, this paper designs the multi-classification SVM model due to its superior nonlinear mapping capability. Three two-classifications are incorporated to diagnosis the roller bearing faults. Finally, the proposed method is illustrated with the vibration data from the roller bearing stand of electric engineering lab in case western reserve university. Experimental results illustrate the higher accuracy of the proposed method compared with conventional method.

A novel fault diagnosis method based on variational mode decomposition (VMD) and multikernel support vector machine (MKSVM) optimized by Immune Genetic Algorithm (IGA) is proposed to accurately and adaptively diagnose mechanical faults. First, mechanical fault vibration signals are decomposed into multiple Intrinsic Mode Functions (IMFs) by VMD. Then the features in time-frequency domain are extracted from IMFs to construct the feature sets of mixed domain. Next, Semisupervised Locally Linear Embedding (SS-LLE) is adopted for fusion and dimension reduction. The feature sets with reduced dimension are inputted to the IGA optimized MKSVM for failure mode identification. Theoretical analysis demonstrates that MKSVM can approximate any multivariable function. The global optimal parameter vector of MKSVM can be rapidly identified by IGA parameter optimization. The experiments of mechanical faults show that, compared to traditional fault diagnosis models, the proposed method significantly increases the diagnosis accuracy of mechanical faults and enhances the generalization of its application.

For differences of time-domain energy distribution of different gear fault vibration signal, an analytical method based on local mean decomposition (LMD) and least squares support vector machine (LS-SVM) is proposed to apply to gear fault diagnosis. First vibrational signal of gear is decomposed into a series of product functions (PF) by LMD method. Then extracting energy characteristic parameters of PF components which contain main fault information to constitute a fault feature vectors, which is considered as input sample of well-trained LS-SVM, and then identifying working state and fault type of different gear can be identified accurately and effectively by diagnostic method based on LMD and LS-SVM.

As critical components, rolling bearings are widely used in a variety of rotating machinery. It is necessary to develop a suitable fault diagnosis method to prevent malfunctions and breakages of bearings during operation. However, the current methods for the fault diagnosis of rolling bearings are too cumbersome to be applied in practical engineering. In addition, the working condition of rolling bearings is generally tough, complex, and especially variable. These conditions cause fault diagnosis methods to be less effective. This paper aims to provide a simple and effective method for the fault diagnosis of rolling bearings under variable conditions. The main contribution of this paper is as follows: (1) The refined composite multiscale fuzzy entropy (RCMFE) is applied in bearing fault feature extraction because of its simplicity and high efficiency; (2) The improved support vector machine (ISVM), based on the whale optimization algorithm (WOA), is proposed to identify the fault pattern of rolling bearings. The ISVM is proposed in this paper to solve the problem that parameter setting affects the classification effect of SVM. In the ISVM, the WOA is employed to optimize both the regularization and kernel parameters of the SVM. Compared with the traditional optimization methods, the WOA has the advantages of high optimization speed and better optimization ability; (3) Combining the RCMFE and the ISVM to diagnose bearing fault under variable working conditions. The effectiveness of the RCMFE-ISVM has been validated via experimental vibration signal of bearings faults under variable working conditions.
