Adenoid hypertrophy may lead to pediatric obstructive sleep apnea and mouth breathing. The routine screening of adenoid hypertrophy in dental practice is helpful for preventing relevant craniofacial and systemic consequences. The purpose of this study was to develop an automated assessment tool for adenoid hypertrophy based on artificial intelligence. A clinical dataset containing 581 lateral cephalograms was used to train the convolutional neural network (CNN). According to Fujioka’s method for adenoid hypertrophy assessment, the regions of interest were defined with four keypoint landmarks. The adenoid ratio based on the four landmarks was used for adenoid hypertrophy assessment. Another dataset consisting of 160 patients’ lateral cephalograms were used for evaluating the performance of the network. Diagnostic performance was evaluated with statistical analysis. The developed system exhibited high sensitivity (0.906, 95% confidence interval [CI]: 0.750–0.980), specificity (0.938, 95% CI: 0.881–0.973) and accuracy (0.919, 95% CI: 0.877–0.961) for adenoid hypertrophy assessment. The area under the receiver operating characteristic curve was 0.987 (95% CI: 0.974–1.000). These results indicated the proposed assessment system is able to assess AH accurately. The CNN-incorporated system showed high accuracy and stability in the detection of adenoid hypertrophy from children’ lateral cephalograms, implying the feasibility of automated adenoid hypertrophy screening utilizing a deep neural network model.

Abstract Aims Heart failure (HF) is a leading cause of death. Early intervention is the key to reduce HF-related morbidity and mortality. This study assesses the utility of electrocardiograms (ECGs) in HF risk prediction. Methods and results Data from the baseline visits (1987–89) of the Atherosclerosis Risk in Communities (ARIC) study was used. Incident hospitalized HF events were ascertained by ICD codes. Participants with good quality baseline ECGs were included. Participants with prevalent HF were excluded. ECG-artificial intelligence (AI) model to predict HF was created as a deep residual convolutional neural network (CNN) utilizing standard 12-lead ECG. The area under the receiver operating characteristic curve (AUC) was used to evaluate prediction models including (CNN), light gradient boosting machines (LGBM), and Cox proportional hazards regression. A total of 14 613 (45% male, 73% of white, mean age ± standard deviation of 54 ± 5) participants were eligible. A total of 803 (5.5%) participants developed HF within 10 years from baseline. Convolutional neural network utilizing solely ECG achieved an AUC of 0.756 (0.717–0.795) on the hold-out test data. ARIC and Framingham Heart Study (FHS) HF risk calculators yielded AUC of 0.802 (0.750–0.850) and 0.780 (0.740–0.830). The highest AUC of 0.818 (0.778–0.859) was obtained when ECG-AI model output, age, gender, race, body mass index, smoking status, prevalent coronary heart disease, diabetes mellitus, systolic blood pressure, and heart rate were used as predictors of HF within LGBM. The ECG-AI model output was the most important predictor of HF. Conclusions ECG-AI model based solely on information extracted from ECG independently predicts HF with accuracy comparable to existing FHS and ARIC risk calculators.

Lateral cephalometry has been widely used for skeletal classification in orthodontic diagnosis and treatment planning. However, this conventional system, requiring manual tracing of individual landmarks, contains possible errors of inter- and intravariability and is highly time-consuming. This study aims to provide an accurate and robust skeletal diagnostic system by incorporating a convolutional neural network (CNN) into a 1-step, end-to-end diagnostic system with lateral cephalograms. A multimodal CNN model was constructed on the basis of 5,890 lateral cephalograms and demographic data as an input. The model was optimized with transfer learning and data augmentation techniques. Diagnostic performance was evaluated with statistical analysis. The proposed system exhibited >90% sensitivity, specificity, and accuracy for vertical and sagittal skeletal diagnosis. Clinical performance of the vertical classification showed the highest accuracy at 96.40 (95% CI, 93.06 to 98.39; model III). The receiver operating characteristic curve and the area under the curve both demonstrated the excellent performance of the system, with a mean area under the curve >95%. The heat maps of cephalograms were also provided for deeper understanding of the quality of the learned model by visually representing the region of the cephalogram that is most informative in distinguishing skeletal classes. In addition, we present broad applicability of this system through subtasks. The proposed CNN-incorporated system showed potential for skeletal orthodontic diagnosis without the need for intermediary steps requiring complicated diagnostic procedures.

Objectives. The aim of this study was to evaluate a light-emitting diode fluorescence tool, the SOPROLIFE light-induced fluorescence evaluator, and compare it to the international caries detection and assessment system-II (ICDAS-II) in the detection of occlusal caries. Methods. A total of 219 permanent posterior teeth in 21 subjects, with age ranging from 15 to 65 years, were examined. An intraclass correlation coefficient (ICC) was computed to assess the reliability between the two diagnostic methods.Results.The results showed a high reliability between the two methods (ICC = 0.92; IC = 0.901–0.940;P<0.001). The SOPROLIFE blue fluorescence mode had a high sensitivity (87%) and a high specificity (99%) when compared to ICDAS-II.Conclusion.Compared to the most used visual method in the diagnosis of occlusal caries lesions, the finding from this study suggests that SOPROLIFE can be used as a reproducible and reliable assessment tool. At a cut-off point, categorizing noncarious lesions and visual change in enamel, SOPROLIFE shows a high sensitivity and specificity. We can conclude that financially ICDAS is better than SOPROLIFE. However SOPROLIFE is easier for clinicians since it is a simple evaluation of images. Finally in terms of efficiency SOPROLIFE is not superior to ICDAS but tends to be equivalent with the same advantages.

Ancylostomiasis is a fairly common small bowel parasite disease identified by capsule endoscopy (CE) for which a computer-aided clinical detection method has not been established. We sought to develop an artificial intelligence system with a convolutional neural network (CNN) to automatically detect hookworms in CE images. We trained a deep CNN system based on a YOLO-V4 (You Look Only Once-Version4) detector using 11236 CE images of hookworms. We assessed its performance by calculating the area under the receiver operating characteristic curve and its sensitivity, specificity, and accuracy using an independent test set of 10,529 small-bowel images including 531 images of hookworms. The trained CNN system required 403 seconds to evaluate 10,529 test images. The area under the curve for the detection of hookworms was 0.972 (95% confidence interval (CI), 0.967-0.978). The sensitivity, specificity, and accuracy of the CNN system were 92.2%, 91.1%, and 91.2%, respectively, at a probability score cut-off of 0.485. We developed and validated a CNN-based system for detecting hookworms in CE images. By combining this high-accuracy, high-speed, and oversight-preventing system with other CNN systems, we hope it will become an important supplement for detecting intestinal abnormalities in CE images. This trial is registered with ChiCTR2000034546 (a clinical research of artificial-intelligence-aided diagnosis for hookworms in small intestine by capsule endoscope images).

This study reviews the current status and future prospective of knowledge on the use of artificial intelligence for the prediction of spontaneous preterm labor and birth (“preterm birth” hereafter). The summary of review suggests that different machine learning approaches would be optimal for different types of data regarding the prediction of preterm birth: the artificial neural network, logistic regression and/or the random forest for numeric data; the support vector machine for electrohysterogram data; the recurrent neural network for text data; and the convolutional neural network for image data. The ranges of performance measures were 0.79–0.94 for accuracy, 0.22–0.97 for sensitivity, 0.86–1.00 for specificity, and 0.54–0.83 for the area under the receiver operating characteristic curve. The following maternal variables were reported to be major determinants of preterm birth: delivery and pregestational body mass index, age, parity, predelivery systolic and diastolic blood pressure, twins, below high school graduation, infant sex, prior preterm birth, progesterone medication history, upper gastrointestinal tract symptom, gastroesophageal reflux disease, Helicobacter pylori, urban region, calcium channel blocker medication history, gestational diabetes mellitus, prior cone biopsy, cervical length, myomas and adenomyosis, insurance, marriage, religion, systemic lupus erythematosus, hydroxychloroquine sulfate, and increased cerebrospinal fluid and reduced cortical folding due to impaired brain growth.

AbstractAlzheimer disease and other dementias have become the 7th cause of death worldwide. Still lacking a cure, an early detection of the disease in order to provide the best intervention is crucial. To develop an assessment system for the general public, speech analysis is the optimal solution since it reflects the speaker’s cognitive skills abundantly and data collection is relatively inexpensive compared with brain imaging, blood testing, etc. While most of the existing literature extracted statistics-based features and relied on a feature selection process, we have proposed a novel Feature Sequence representation and utilized a data-driven approach, namely, the recurrent neural network to perform classification in this study. The system is also shown to be fully-automated, which implies the system can be deployed widely to all places easily. To validate our study, a series of experiments have been conducted with 120 speech samples, and the score in terms of the area under the receiver operating characteristic curve is as high as 0.838.

AbstractEarly detection of COVID-19 based on chest CT will enable timely treatment of patients and help control the spread of the disease. With rapid spreading of COVID-19 in many countries, however, CT volumes of suspicious patients are increasing at a speed much faster than the availability of human experts. Here, we propose an artificial intelligence (AI) system for fast COVID-19 diagnosis with an accuracy comparable to experienced radiologists. A large dataset was constructed by collecting 970 CT volumes of 496 patients with confirmed COVID-19 and 260 negative cases from three hospitals in Wuhan, China, and 1,125 negative cases from two publicly available chest CT datasets. Trained using only 312 cases, our diagnosis system, which is based on deep convolutional neural network, is able to achieve an accuracy of 94.98%, an area under the receiver operating characteristic curve (AUC) of 97.91%, a sensitivity of 94.06%, and a specificity of 95.47% on an independent external verification dataset of 1,255 cases. In a reader study involving five radiologists, only one radiologist is slightly more accurate than the AI system. The AI system is two orders of magnitude faster than radiologists and the code is available at https://github.com/ChenWWWeixiang/diagnosis_covid19.

The application of artificial intelligence and machine learning algorithms in education reform is an inevitable trend of teaching development. In order to improve the teaching intelligence, this paper builds an auxiliary teaching system based on computer artificial intelligence and neural network based on the traditional teaching model. Moreover, in this paper, the optimization strategy is adopted in the TLBO algorithm to reduce the running time of the algorithm, and the extracurricular learning mechanism is introduced to increase the adjustable parameters, which is conducive to the algorithm jumping out of the local optimum. In addition, in this paper, the crowding factor in the fish school algorithm is used to define the degree or restraint of teachers’ control over students. At the same time, students in the crowded range gather near the teacher, and some students who are difficult to restrain perform the following behavior to follow the top students. Finally, this study builds a model based on actual needs, and designs a control experiment to verify the system performance. The results show that the system constructed in this paper has good performance and can provide a theoretical reference for related research.

You Only Look Once (YOLO). Keywords : Automated Teller Machine (ATM), Kecerdasan Buatan, Pendeteksi Obyek, You Only Look Once (YOLO)
