4-N,N-Dimethylamino-4'-N'-methyl-stilbazolium Tosylate (DAST) organic single crystals controlled by (Z)-Octadec-9-enoic acid (oleic acid, OA) was grown by a slow-cooling method. The as-grown DAST single crystals were systematically characterized by FTIR, X-ray diffraction, second harmonic generation, and UV-vis spectroscopy. Results indicate that addition of OA into the DAST solutions leads to the controlled growth of DAST single crystals and consequently, the crystal quality and optical properties can be modified. Particularly, the DAST crystals grown under the control of OA exhibit larger sizes, higher crystallinities, and better optical qualities with higher optical band gaps and lower defect density, compared with those grown in the absence of OA. These results are helpful for better understanding the controlled growth of DAST organic single crystals and modifying their properties for practical applications.

Two-dimensional (2D) materials driven by their unique electronic and optoelectronic properties have opened up possibilities for their various applications. The large and high-quality single crystals are essential to fabricate high-performance 2D devices for practical applications. Herein, IV-V 2D GeP single crystals with high-quality and large size of 20 × 15 × 5 mm3 were successfully grown by the Bi flux growth method. The crystalline quality of GeP was confirmed by high-resolution X-ray diffraction (HRXRD), Laue diffraction, electron probe microanalysis (EPMA) and Raman spectroscopy. Additionally, intrinsic anisotropic optical properties were investigated by angle-resolved polarized Raman spectroscopy (ARPRS) and transmission spectra in detail. Furthermore, we fabricated high-performance photodetectors based on GeP, presenting a relatively large photocurrent over 3 mA. More generally, our results will significantly contribute the GeP crystal to the wide optoelectronic applications.

The nonlinear optical single crystals of diglycine barium chloride monohydrate were grown by slow evaporation solution growth technique from the mixture of an aqueous solution of glycine and barium chloride in the ratio 2:1 at room temperature. The grown crystals were characterized by various techniques such as single crystals X-ray diffraction, FTIR, UV-Vis-NIR spectra, Vickers hardness studies, thermogravimetric analysis, and fluorescence spectra. Its second harmonic generation efficiency was measured by Kurtz and Perry powder technique using Nd :YAG laser.

Large single crystals of the promising molecular organic ferroelectric diisopropylammonium bromide (DIPAB) have been grown by the solution technique. A structural study was performed using single-crystal X-ray diffraction analysis. The twin element of a selected DIPAB crystal was identified by a morphological study. Intermolecular interactions present in the grown crystal were explored by Hirshfeld surface (three-dimensional) and fingerprint plot (two-dimensional) studies. In UV–vis spectroscopy, the DIPAB crystal has shown high transparency with a wide direct band gap of 5.65 eV. In the photoluminescence spectrum, sharp UV and blue emissions were observed at 370, 392, 417 and 432 nm. The electrical properties were investigated by measuring the dielectric constant (∊) and loss (tanδ) of the grown crystal. The DIPAB crystal exhibits a promising piezoelectric charge coefficient (d33) value of 18 pC N−1, which makes it suitable for transducer applications. A high ferroelectric Curie temperature (Tc≃ 425 K) with high remnant polarization (20.52 µC cm−2) and high coercive field (12.25 kV cm−1) were observed in the as-grown crystal. Vickers microhardness analysis shows that the value of Meyer's index (n= 7.27) belongs to the soft material range, which was also confirmed by void analysis along three crystallographic axes. It is shown that the DIPAB crystal has potential for optical, ferroelectric and piezoelectric applications.

The magnesium-rich intermetallic compound Sm3RuMg7 was synthesized by induction melting of the elements. Single crystals were grown by slow cooling of the polycrystalline sample. The structure was characterized by powder and single-crystal X-ray diffraction: ordered Ti6Sn5 type, P63/mmc, Z = 2, a = 1034.1(2), c = 611.3(1) pm, wR2 = 0.0216, 399 F2 values and 19 parameters. The ruthenium atoms have slightly distorted octahedral samarium coordination. These RuSm6/2 octahedra (Ru-Sm 279 pm) are condensed via common faces leading to chains in the c direction which are arranged in the form of a hexagonal rod packing. Between these rods the Mg2 atoms build chains of face-sharing trigonal prisms. Alternately these prisms are centered by Mg3 or capped by Mg1 atoms on the rectangular faces. Within the magnesium substructure the Mg-Mg distances range from 303 to 335 pm. The Mg3 site shows slight mixing with samarium, leading to the composition Sm3.16RuMg6.84 for the investigated crystal. The compounds RE3RuMg7 (RE = Gd, Tb) are isotypic.

Single crystals of Sulphamic Acid doped with Zinc Sulphate and Manganese Sulphate were grown at room temperature using slow evaporation technique. Structural analysis of the grown crystals was done using single crystal X Ray Diffraction and powder X Ray Diffraction studies. Various functional groups seen in the grown crystals are determined using FTIR spectroscopic analysis. The cut-off wavelength of ZnSO4 and MnSO4 doped Sulphamic acid were evaluated by UV-Vis-NIR spectral studies. Thermal behaviour of the grown crystals was identified from Thermogravimetric Analysis (TGA) and Differential Thermogravimetric Analysis (DTA). The mechanical strength and Second harmonic generation of the grown crystals was identified by Vicker’s Microhardness Test and Kurtz powder technique respectively.

AbstractNovel nonlinear optical semi-organic, potassium phthalate di lithium borate (KPDLiB) single crystals were successfully grown by the slow solvent evaporation technique. Good crystalline nature and an orthorhombic structure were confirmed by powder X-ray diffraction and single crystal X-ray diffraction studies. The functional groups of KPDLiB were identified using FT-IR spectrum recorded in the range of 4000 cm−1 to 450 cm−1. UV-Vis spectrum showed transmitting ability of the crystals in the entire visible region. The photoluminescence spectrum exhibited good fluorescence emission in a visible region at 384 nm, 416 nm and 578 nm. The second harmonic generation efficiency of the grown crystal was evaluated from Kurtz powder technique.

AbstractL-cysteine hydrogen fluoride (LCHF) single crystals were grown from aqueous solution. Single crystal X-ray diffraction, FT-IR, UV-Vis-NIR, and TG-DTA were used to test the grown crystals. The specimen dielectric and mechanical behaviors were also studied. Powder X-ray diffraction of the grown crystal was recorded and indexed. The optical properties of the LCHF crystal were determined using UV-Vis spectroscopy. It was found that the optical band gap of LCHF was 4.8 eV. The crystal functional groups were identified using FT-IR. Second harmonic generation (SHG) efficiency of the LCHF was three times higher than that of KDP. The dielectric constant, dielectric loss and AC conductivity were measured at different frequencies and temperatures.

The quaternary indides RE7Ni5−xGe3+xIn6 (RE = La,Nd, Sm) were synthesized from the elements by arc-melting. Single crystals were grown by slow cooling of the polycrystalline samples. The structures were characterized by powder and single-crystal X-ray diffraction: Ce7Ni4.73Ge3.27In6 type, P6/m, Z = 1, a = 1147.05(9), c = 426.82(4) pm, wR2 = 0.0652, 528 F2 values for La7Ni4.46Ge3.54In6, a = 1134.5(7), c = 407.1(7) pm, wR2 = 0.0419, 441 F2 values for Nd7Ni4.91Ge3.09In6, and a = 1133.5(2), c = 404.3(1) pm, wR2 = 0.0619, 498 F2 values for Sm7Ni4.31Ge3.69In6, with 25 parameters per refinement. Characteristic features of the RE7Ni5−xGe3+xIn6 structures are hexagonal, AlB2-related prisms around the RE1 atoms and a tricapped, trigonalprismatic coordination of the nickel atoms

Single crystals of L-tartaric acid (LTA), an organic nonlinear optical material, have been grown using a home-built crystal growth setup (the Moovendaran–Kalyanasundar–Natarajan setup). Crystals of LTA were also grown by the slow evaporation solution technique. These single crystals were characterized using single-crystal X-ray diffraction, high-resolution X-ray diffraction, and IR and UV–Vis–NIR spectroscopy. In addition, measurements of Vickers microhardness, laser damage threshold value and second harmonic generation efficiency are reported. Thermal, dielectric and photoluminescence studies were also carried out.

Single crystals of sulphamic acid of 11 × 7 × 3 mm3dimension were successfully grown by slow evaporation technique. The crystal structure of grown crystals was confirmed by single crystal X-ray diffraction analysis. The presence of functional groups in the crystal lattice has been qualitatively determined by FT-IR and FT-Raman analyses. Theoretical group factor analysis predicts the possible modes of vibrations. The optical transmission spectroscopy (UV-Vis) clearly evidences the suitability of this material for optical application. The thermal behaviour of the crystal was studied by thermogravimetric (TG) and differential scanning calorimetric (DSC) studies. The nonlinear optical (NLO) characteristic of this material was explored by the second harmonic generation (SHG) conversion efficiency.
