This work is dedicated to the preparation and characterization of the radio-, thermo-, and photoluminescent properties of Lu2O3:Eu and Lu2O3:Tb nanopowder (NPs) scintillators, prepared by means of hydrothermal processing, and their film analogues made of these NPs by the spin coating method. The luminescent properties of NPs and films were characterized by cathodoluminescence (CL), photoluminescence (PL), X-ray excited radioluminescence (RL), and thermoluminescence (TL) at low and high temperatures. In Lu2O3:Eu NPs and films, mostly the luminescence of Eu3+ ions occupying the C2 site of the host, with the most intensive peaks at 611.6 nm and a decay time of 1.5 ms, was observed. On the contrary, two types of Tb3+ centers in the C2 and C3i sites with the main emission lines at 542.4 and 544.0 nm and the corresponding 4f→5d excitation bands at 270 and 305 nm and decay times of t1/e = 2.17 and 3.96 ms were observed in the case of Lu2O3:Tb NPs and films. Indications were noted that Tb3+ in the C3i symmetry position was most active in the CL spectra of Lu2O3:Tb NPs and a respective film. Thermoluminescent peaks at 110 °C and 170 °C for Lu2O3:Eu NPs and at 75 °C and 120 °C in Lu2O3:Tb NPs were observed corresponding to the hole and electron traps, respectively. Significantly different onsets of temperature quenching of Eu3+ and Tb3+ luminescence in Lu2O3:Eu and Lu2O3:Tb NPs were found at ~90 °C and ~320 °C, respectively.

Ag/TiO2thin films were prepared via sol-gel spin coating method. Structural, surface morphology and optical properties were investigated with the addition of two different amount of silver (Ag). X-ray diffraction pattern shows the sample with pure TiO2, the only phase presence was brookite TiO2. When the Ag content added into the solution, the phase existed for the samples with TiO2doped 0.5g Ag and TiO2doped 1.0g Ag were anatase TiO2with no peak corresponds to Ag phase. The surface morphology of film was characterized by scanning electron microscopy (SEM). The films were annealed at 450 °C and it shows non-uniform films. The films have a large flaky and cracks film which was attributed to surface tension between the film and the air during the drying process. When the solution of sol was added with Ag content, it shows the porous structure with flaky-crack films. With the increasing of the Ag content from 0.5g to 1.0g, the structure is more porous and it is good for the photocatalytic activity. The UV-Vis spectra shows that the film exhibits a low absorbance which was due to the substrate is inhomogeneously covered by the flaky-crack films.

Spin on glass (SOG) and Tetraethylorthosilicate (TEOS) as a dielectric material were applied for inorganic powder type electroluminescent (EL) device. The spin coating method was used for the SOG layer or TEOS layer formation and phosphor layer formation. The phosphor layer was composed of ZnS:Cu,Cl powders and organic binder. The brightness of powder EL has been measured.

ZnO:Eu3+ films were obtained by dip-coating method and influence of heat treatment on luminescent properties was investigated. Emission and excitation spectra revealed that the organic and nitrate molecules, which adhered on the surface of films when the samples were treated at lower temperatures (300oC-400oC), played an important role on the luminescent properties. At higher temperatures (500oC-800oC), the luminescence spectra of ZnO and Eu3+ were quite different with those treated at lower temperatures. Energy transferred from ZnO host to Eu3+ was obviously observed in the emission and excitation spectra. The luminescence mechanism was discussed briefly.

AbstractFe3+ undoped and doped CaWO4: Pr3+ phosphors have been successfully synthesised by using the solid-state reaction method. The products were characterised by powder X-ray diffraction (XRD), photoluminescence (PL) and fluorescence lifetime testing techniques, respectively. The mean crystallite size (50.7 nm) of CaWO4: Pr3+ is obtained from powder XRD data. PL spectra of both Fe3+ undoped and doped CaWO4: Pr3+ phosphors exhibit excitation peaks at 214, 449, 474, and 487 nm under monitor wavelength at 651 nm, and emission peaks at 532, 558, 605, 621, 651, 691, 712, and 736 nm under blue light (λem=487 nm) excitation. The effect of trace Fe3+ on luminescence properties of CaWO4: Pr3+ phosphor is studied by controlling the doping concentration of Fe3+. The results show that radioactive energy transfers from luminescence centre Pr3+ to quenching centre Fe3+ occurred in Fe3+ doped CaWO4: Pr3+ phosphors. With the increasing concentration of Fe3+, the energy transfer from Pr3+ to Fe3+ is enhanced, and the emission intensity of CaWO4: Pr3+ will be lower. The decay times (5.22 and 4.99 μs) are obtained for typical samples Ca0.995WO4: Pr3+0.005 and Ca0.99275WO4: Pr3+0.005, Fe3+0.00225, respectively. This work shows that nonferrous phosphors can improve the luminescent intensity of the phosphors.

Y3Al5O12:Nd3+ nanoceramics were obtained by sintering nanocrystalline Y3Al5O12:Nd3+ powders at 450 oC under different pressures between 2 and 8 GPa. The structural purity, residual stress, strain, texture, and crystallite size of the products were analysed with X-ray powder diffraction. The results indicate that the average crystallite size remains unchanged at about 30 nm in spite of the heating and the pressure applied. No texture was observed. On the other hand, the microstrains increase with increasing pressure, while the residual stresses are at their maximum in the green body and the sample processed at 8 GPa. Increasing strains were observed to increase the width of the luminescence lines and to decrease the luminescence decay times.
