The coordination chemistry of butane-2,3-dione bis (2′-pyridylhydrazone) towards the divalent first-row transition metals zinc and iron has been explored. Depending upon the conditions, the ligand in the six complexes was found to be either neutral, mono, or doubly deprotonated. The zinc(II) and iron(II) complexes were fully characterized by elemental analysis, mass spectrometry, and X-ray diffraction methods.

( E)-4-[2-(Pyridin-4-yl)vinyl]benzaldehyde, containing both a 4-vinylpyridine and an aldehyde functionality, is utilized to develop new, highly conjugated chalcone compounds and a bis-Schiff base azine compound. The chalcone-containing compounds are further explored for their protonation, methylation and silver(I) coordination chemistry using the pyridine moiety. In parallel, a cyano-containing analogue, ( E)-4-[2-(pyridin-4-yl)vinyl]benzonitrile is also synthesized and studied for its silver(I) coordination chemistry. These new compounds are fully characterized by mass spectrometry, elemental analysis and spectroscopic techniques. The methylated product of ( E)-1-(9-anthryl)-3-{4-[2-(pyridin-4-yl)vinyl]phenyl}prop-2-en-1-one and a silver complex of ( E)-4-[2-(pyridin-4-yl)vinyl]benzonitrile are structurally determined by X-ray crystallography.

A series of copper(ii) complexes of the ligand 2,6-bis(pyridin-3-ylethynyl)pyridine have been synthesised and characterised by 1H and DOSY NMR, IR and UV-Vis spectroscopies, mass spectrometry, elemental analysis and single crystal X-ray diffraction. In solution these systems display almost identical spectroscopic properties, however the solid state structures are shown to vary widely, depending upon the choice of anion. The tetrafluoroborate salt was revealed to be a discrete Cu2L4 cage-like helicate. The tosylate salt, whilst of the same Cu2L4 stoichiometry, was shown to be a coordination polymer. Finally the nitrate salt structure was observed to be a discrete Cu2L2 metallocycle.

A study on the acid-induced ring-expansion reaction of the first oxaphosphirane complexes bearing an electron-withdrawing C-substituent is described. The stereoselectively obtained 1,3,4-dioxaphospholane complexes 4a–c, representing the first examples of such fluorinated ligands, were unambiguously characterized by multinuclear NMR, elemental analysis, mass spectrometry, and single-crystal X-ray diffraction studies.

A series of fourteen new 3-[N-substituted carbamoyl (or thiocarbamoyl)]-aminopropyl-dimethyl-phosphine oxides have been synthesized and characterized. The compounds were prepared via reaction of the 3-aminopropyl-dimethyl-phosphine oxide with the corresponding isocyanates or isothiocyanates. The composition of the compounds was proved by elemental analysis and the structures were confirmed by IR, 1H, 31P, 31P{1H} NMR spectroscopy and by mass spectrometry. The structures of 3[(N-phenyl-thiocarbamoyl)amino]propyl-dimethyl-phosphine oxide (5), 3[(N-4- chlorophenyl-thiocarbamoyl)amino]propyl-dimethyl-phosphine oxide (6), and 3[(N-benzyl-thiocarbamoyl) amino]propyl-dimethyl-phosphine oxide (9) have been confirmed by X-ray diffraction.

New dimethylphosphinoyl-substituted α-aminoarylmethanephosphonates 1a - f have been synthesized via addition of dimethyl or diethyl phosphites to Schiff bases and via Kabachnik-Fields reaction. The structure of the compounds was confirmed by elemental analysis, IR, 1H and 31P{1H} NMR spectroscopy, mass spectrometry and in two cases by X-ray diffraction.

Three new N-phosphinoyl-substituted aminomethanephosphonic acids have been synthesized and characterized: dimethylphosphinoylmethyl-imino-bis(methanephosphonic acid) (1), [3-(dimethylphosphinoyl)-propyl]-imino-bis(methanephosphonic acid) (2), and N-benzyl-Ndimethylphosphinoylmethyl- aminomethanephosphonic acid (3). The latter was isolated as a hydrochloride 3 ・ HCl. The acids have been prepared via Moedritzer-Irani reaction from the corresponding dimethylphosphinoyl-substituted primary and secondary aliphatic amines. Their structures have been confirmed by elemental analysis, IR, 1H, 31P{1H}, 13C{1H} NMR spectroscopy, electrospray ionization mass spectrometry, and single-crystal X-ray diffraction.

Four novel silver(i) and lead(ii) halide compounds with the 4-methyl-1,2,4-triazole-3-thiol (Hmptrz) ligand, namely [Ag2(mptrz)(μ3-X)]n (X = I (1) and Br (2)) and [Pb4(μ4-O)(mptrz)4(μ2-X)2] (X = I (3) and Cl (4)), have been synthesized and characterized. The structures exhibit different dimensionality depending on the nature of the metal ions. Compounds 1 and 2 are isomorphous and have 2D layered structures based on inorganic [Ag2X2]n infinite chains (X = I and Br), in which the mptrz– ligand displays a novel pentadentate bridging coordination mode. Compounds 3 and 4 have similar structures and are composed of a discrete tetranuclear lead(ii) cluster featuring an oxygen-centred Pb4(µ4-O) tetrahedron. Compounds 1 and 2 display solid-state photoluminescent emission with the maximum at 589 and 420 nm respectively. Compounds 3 and 4 show solid-state photoluminescent emission with the maximum at 710 and 540 nm respectively. Additionally, compounds 1–4 were characterized by IR, elemental analysis, powder X-ray diffraction and thermogravimetric analysis.

A type of cross-linking starch microsphere (CSMs) has been synthesized via reversed phase suspension method. Crosslinked starch microsphere has good adsorption performance to metal ions in water. The adsorption kinetics of Co (II) on the CSMs, selectivity of adsorption CSMs towards Co (II),Cu (II),Pb (II),Cd (II) and adsorption effects of media towards Co (II) were investigated. The CSMs and its adsorption product were comparatively characterized by X-ray diffraction (XRD). The results showed that The adsorption rate is mainly controlled by liquid film diffusion, and the constant of adsorption rate is 0.0686min-1 at 308K. The crystal structure of the CSMs decreased greatly after the incorporation of Co (II). Co (II) has better adsorption selectivity on CSMs. Ions coexist and other substances in the solution have certain impact on adsorption. Those data are helpful for treatment of the wastewater containing heavy ions.
