The stability of hydrophobic surface has an important influence on the application of superhydrophobic function. The destruction of hydrophobic micro-nano structures on the material surface is the main factor leading to the loss of superhydrophobic property. In order to improve the corrosion resistance of superhydrophobic surface, Ni-Co-BN nanocomposite coatings with superhydrophobic property were prepared on 45 steel by two-step jet electrodeposition. The surface morphology, water contact angle, and corrosion resistance of the samples were measured and characterized by scanning electron microscope, surface contact angle measuring instrument, and electrochemical workstation. The results of electrochemical analysis show that the superhydrophobic property improved the corrosion resistance of Ni-Co-BN nanocomposite coating. The enhanced corrosion resistance is of great significance to the integrity of the microstructure and the durability of the superhydrophobic function.

A novel and stable super-hydrophobic film was prepared by stearic acid (C18H36O2), which was chemically adsorbed onto the anodized aluminum surface. The maximum static water contact angle (WCA) of the super-hydrophobic surface was 157.5º ± 2.0º and the contact angle hysteresis was less than 3º. The superhydrophobic property is attributed to the micro-nanoporous surface morphology and stearic acid. The pore size on the surface of anodic aluminum oxide is an important factor for controlling the superhydrophobic adhesiveness. The superhydrophobic surface is a factor to reduce device-associated infection and can be used in metal packaging practice.

Ni-Al2O3 nanocomposite coatings were fabricated by jet electrodeposition process. Effect of concentration of Al2O3 in the electrolyte, current density and electrolyte jet speed on nano-Al2O3 content were analyzed. The composite coatings’ micro structure, energy spectrum was observed under the scanning microscope(SEM). Effect of nano-Al2O3 content on the microhardness and corrosion resistance were evaluated. The results shows that the Ni deposited layers have nanocrystalline micro structure with average size of 50 nm. Al2O3 particles are well dispersed in layer and the particles content is up to 12.2 at %. Microhardness of the coating increase, bond strength and corrosion resistance of the coatings first increase then decrease with increase of Al2O3. content in coatings.

Surface hydrophilicity is considered to have a strong influence on the biological reactions of bone-substituting materials. However, the influence of a hydrophilic or hydrophobic surface on the osteoconductivity is not completely clear. In this study, we produced super-hydrophilic and hydrophobic surface on Ti-and Zr-alloys. Hydrothermal treatment at 180 oC for 180 min. in the distilled water and immersion in x5 PBS(-) brought the super-hydrophilic surface (water contact angle < 10 (deg.)) and heat treatment of as-hydrothermaled the hydrophobic surface. The osteoconductivity of the surface treated samples with several water contact angle was evaluated by in vivo testing. The surface properties, especially water contact angle, strongly affected the osteoconductivity and protein adsorbability, and not the surface substance.

In this study, We immobilized hydrogel material onto expanded polytetrafluoroethylene (ePTFE) film and used as an functional biomaterial. The material is a film containing titanium oxide onto polymer sheet. The hydrogel film is hydrophilic, bacterial inactivated and bio-compatible. In order to improve the ePTFE film biocompatibility, the cold plasma or γ-ray technology was used with acetic acid as monomer to deposit onto ePTFE film and then (N-isopropylacrylamide) was grafted onto the surface by radiation photo-grafting. The characteristics of the material surface were evaluated with X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), FTIR and water contact angle. It was found that the contact angle of water on the untreated ePTFE significantly decrease from125° to 72° after ePTFE film being treated with acetic acid plasma deposition procedure. Due to the hydrophilicity of poly (N-isopropylacrylamide), so the contact angle of water on the ePTFE-g-NIPAAm almost approached to 0°. This thermal sensitive ePTFE hydrogels can be applied to artificial guiding tube and wound dressing material.

In this study, we develop a facial one-step approach to prepare durable super-hydrophobic coatings on glass surfaces. The hydrophobic characteristics, corrosive liquid resistance, and mechanical durability of the super-hydrophobic surface are presented. The as-prepared super-hydrophobic surface exhibits a water contact angle (WCA) of 157.2° and contact angle hysteresis of 2.3°. Mico/nano hierarchical structures and elements of silicon and fluorine is observed on super-hydrophobic surfaces. The adhesion strength and hardness of the surface are determined to be 1st level and 4H, respectively. The coating is, thus, capable of maintaining super-hydrophobic state after sand grinding with a load of 200 g and wear distances of 700 mm. The rough surface retained after severe mechanical abrasion observed by atomic force microscope (AFM) microscopically proves the durable origin of the super-hydrophobic coating. Results demonstrate the feasibility of production of the durable super-hydrophobic coating via enhancing its adhesion strength and surface hardness.

Corrosion seriously limits the long-term application of Q235 carbon steel. Herein, a simple fabrication method was used to fabricate superhydrophobic surfaces on Q235 carbon steel for anticorrosion application. The combination of structure and the grafted low-surface-energy material contributed to the formation of superhydrophobic steel surfaces, which exhibited a water contact angle of 161.6° and a contact angle hysteresis of 0.8°. Meanwhile, the as-prepared superhydrophobic surface showed repellent toward different solutions with pH ranging from 1 to 14, presenting excellent chemical stability. Moreover, the acid corrosive liquid (HCl solution with pH of 1) maintained sphere-like shape on the as-prepared superhydrophobic surface at room temperature, indicating superior corrosion resistance. This work provides a simple method to fabricate superhydrophobic steel surfaces with chemical stability and corrosion resistance.

Duplex Ni-P-TiO2/Ni coatings were deposited on the brass substrate by using two baths. Ni-P-TiO2 nanocomposite coatings were electroplated as the outer layer on the Ni-plated brass substrate by adding transparent TiO2 sol (0–50 mL/L) into the Ni-P plating solution. The microstructure, mechanical property and corrosion resistance of the duplex Ni-P-TiO2/Ni nanocomposite coatings were systemically investigated. The results show that the interface of duplex coating was uniform and the adhesion between two layers was extremely good. The microhardness of duplex Ni-P-12.5 mL/L TiO2 /Ni coating was [Formula: see text]616 HV[Formula: see text] compared to [Formula: see text]539 HV[Formula: see text] of Ni-P /Ni coating and [Formula: see text]307 HV[Formula: see text] of single Ni coating. Meanwhile, the wear resistance and the corrosion resistance of the duplex nanocomposite coating have also been improved remarkably compared with single Ni coating. However, adding excessive TiO2 sol (more than 12.5 mL/L) caused the agglomeration of TiO2 nanoparticles and led to a porous structure in the outer layer, resulting in the deterioration of coating properties.

Metallic Al was doped into amorphous carbon (a-C) to form a matrix of a-C(Al) of very low residual stress and high toughness at the expense of some hardness. Nanocrystallites of TiC (nc-TiC) of a few nanometers in size were embedded in this matrix to bring back the hardness. The nanocomposite coating of nc-TiC/a-C(Al) was deposited via co-sputtering of graphite, Ti , and Al targets. Although the nanocomposite coating exhibited a moderately high hardness (about 20 GPa), it possessed extremely high toughness (about 55% of plasticity during indentation deformation) and low residual stress (less than 0.4 GPa), smooth (Ra=5.5 nm ), and hydrophobic surface (contact angle with water reaches 100°).

A super-hydrophobic surface on the polypropylene matrix was fabricated via micromolding and photograft polymerization. A micro-convex body structure was molded by etching templates. The water contact angle could be increased to 138°. The fluoro methacrylate monomers were further grafted to the surface through UV-induced photograft polymerization. The morphology characterization and the spectroanalysis indicated that the rough hierarchical structure (confirmed by scanning electron microscope) and the grafted fluoropolymers (measured by fourier transform infrared spectrum and X-ray energy dispersive spectrometer) made a critical difference. A water contact angle of 160° was arrived.

A novel super-hydrophobic film was prepared by myristic acid (CH3(CH2)12COOH) chemically adsorbed onto the polyethyleneimine (PEI) coated Fe3Al-type intermetallic wafer. The film character and structure were probed with contact angle measurement, scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and atomic force microscope (AFM). The results suggest that the structure of the film is similar to lotus and the seawater contact angle is larger than 150◦. Moreover, the corrosion resistances of untreated and modified samples in seawater were investigated by electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS). Experimental results show that the corrosion rate of Fe3Al-type intermetallic with super-hydrophobic surface decreases dramatically because of its special microstructure.
