The development of potential magnetic materials in metal-doped polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons has been a research hotspot in recent years. Here we have successfully synthesized stable potassium-doped 2,3-dimethylnaphthalene samples. The combination of first-principles calculations and XRD results identifies that doping of potassium into 2,3-dimethylnaphthalene forms a monoclinic structure with a molar ratio of 1:2 between potassium and molecule. The red shifts in the Raman spectra indicate that potassium 4s electrons are transferred to the organic molecules. The magnetic measurements show that the doped materials exhibit a temperature-independent magnetization in the temperature region of 1.8–300 K, which is consistent with the Pauli paramagnetic behavior. This is distinct from the diamagnetism of pristine material. Compared to the previous focus on benzene ring structure, our study of aromatic hydrocarbon derivatives of benzene ring opens a new route for the development of this field.

Abstract During the summer of 1994, we compared the physical and nutrient characteristics of the three main tributaries of Cootes Paradise: Spencer, Chedoke and Borer’s creeks. On all sampling occasions, concentrations of CHL α and nutrients were always lowest in Borer’s Creek and highest in Chedoke Creek. There were generally 10-fold higher CHL α concentrations and 2 to 10 times higher levels of nitrogen and phosphorus in Chedoke Creek compared with Spencer Creek. Despite this, the light environment did not differ significantly between Spencer and Chedoke creeks because the low algal biomass in Spencer Creek was balanced by a relatively high loading of inorganic sediments from the watershed. Laboratory experiments indicated that sediments from Chedoke Creek released up to 10 µg/g of soluble phosphorus per gram (dry weight) of sediment, compared with only 2 µg/g from Spencer Creek. By contrast, sediment samples from Spencer Creek contained levels of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbon that were as high as or higher than those from Chedoke Creek, and much higher than those found in Borer’s Creek. The distribution of normalized PAH concentrations suggests a common source of PAHs in all three tributaries, most likely automobile exhaust, since there were high concentrations of fluoranthene and pyrene, both of which are derivatives of engine combustion.

ABSTRACTHere we report the synthesis and investigation of iron and iron oxide nanowire arrays using mesoporous silica as a host material. In the present work a novel variant of synthesis of ordered magnetic nanowires in the mesoporous silica matrix was suggested. The method is based on the incorporation of a hydrophobic metal compound into the hydrophobic part of silica-surfactant composite. The amount of iron intercalated into the mesoporous matrix was measured by chemical analysis. In all samples it corresponds well to with the molar ratio SiO2: Fe = 9:1. To provide crystallinity of nanowires additional thermal treatment was performed. Thus prepared nanocomposites were characterized by TEM, ED, SAXS, SANS, BET and magnetic measurements. The anisotropy parameters of nanowires were determined using two non-correlated methods: temperature dependence of magnetic susceptibility and small angle polarized neutron scattering. It was found that the particle length increases with the increasing of the decomposition temperature of the metal complex. Obviously it deals with crystallization and growth of metal particles inside the pores at a constant diameter of a single particle. For iron containing sample annealed at 375 °C (form factor of nanowire is about 40), the coercive force at room temperature was found to be 145 Oe at saturation magnetization of 1.2 emu/g, which is not far from modern information storage. It was shown that particles shape and size are in good agreement with that of the pores. Particles are uniform and well ordered in the silica matrix. Thus, the suggested method leads to one-dimensional anisotropic nanostructures which could find an application as high-density data storage magnetic media.

Low concentrations of various carcinogenic polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons cause a considerable increase in cell production when applied to sporelings of certain marine red algae.Whereas low concentrations of carcinogenic derivatives of benzanthracene stimulate cell production, similar concentrations of structurally related non-carcinogens inhibit it.The applicability of the method as a rapid screening test for carcinogens is discussed.
