As a conventional strategy to modulate the structure and properties of inorganic single crystals, hydration/solvation is rarely found to function in pure organic single crystal. Herein, we report chalcone single crystals with CHCl3-dependent emission color and jumping behavior. Two crystals: a pure crystal phase (1) with green-yellow emission and a CHCl3-containing co-crystal phase (1•2CHCl3) with orange-red emission were constructed by fine-controlling the crystallization conditions. The special halogen bond network in the crystal packing structure effectively narrows the bandgap and thereby redshift the emission of 1•2CHCl3. 1•2CHCl3 would revert to 1 together with emission color change when losing CHCl3. These findings are similar to the effect of H2O in hydrated inorganic crystals. Notably, owing to a special pre-organized “molecular pair” structure for [2 + 2] cycloaddition, the pure crystal phase 1 exhibits violently photo-induced jumping phenomenon, indicating large potentials in intelligent devices. This work would overturn the previous perception that the structurally simple solvent molecules without conjugation cannot greatly affect the structure and properties of pure organic single crystals and provide a new strategy to construct multi-colored organic fluorescent crystals.

In the title compound, 2C14H8N4O6·CH2Cl2, the dichloromethane solvent molecule resides on a crystallographic twofold axis. The mean plane of the phthalisoimide ring is oriented at a dihedral angle of 32.93 (12)° with respect to the nitro-substituted benzene ring. An intramolecular N—H...O hydrogen bond occurs. The crystal packing features a short Cl...O halogen-bond interaction [3.093 (3) Å].

ABSTRACTSingle crystals of Al2O3 were implanted with chromium and zirconium to fluences of 1 × 1016 to 1 × 1017 ions cm−2. Rutherford backscattering-channeling studies showed the surface layers to be damaged but crystalline with the implanted ions randomly distributed. The microhardness and indentation fracture toughness were higher for the random solutions than for conventionally formed solid solutions. Changes in structure and properties caused by annealing in air at temperatures up to 1800°C were studied.

Using X-ray diffractometry and spectral measurements, the structure and properties of graded X-ray optical elements have been examined. Experimental and theoretical data on X-ray supermirrors, which were prepared by the magnetron sputtering technique using precise thickness control, are reported. Measurements on graded aperiodic Si1−x Ge x single crystals, which were grown by the Czochralski technique, are also presented. The lattice parameter of such a crystal changes almost linearly with increasing Ge concentration. The measurements indicate that Si1−x Ge x crystals with concentrations up to 7 at.% Ge can be grown with a quality comparable to that of pure Si crystals.

The complex compounds 4HN (SO2Me)2 · (diaza-18-crown-6) (1) and Na[N(SO2Ph)2] · 2HN(SO2Ph)2 · 2 (12-crown-4) · 2 MeOH (2) were obtained from their components and characterized by low-temperature X-ray diffraction. Structure 1 (monoclinic, space group P21/n) displays centrosymmetric formula units consisting of a biangular diazonia-18-crown-6 dication, two (MeSO2)2N− anions situated above and below the macrocycle and linked to the NH2+ groups via an N - H ··· O and N -H ··· N bond system, and finally two HN(SO2Me)2 molecules, each forming an N -H ··· O bond to one of the anions. The molecule-anion entity represents an iso form of the [(RSO2)2N -H ··· N (SO2R)2]− homoconjugates previously described. The crystal packing of 1 is stabilized by an extensive and highly organized [H2C -H ··· O(S)] hydrogen bond network. Structure 2 (monoclinic, space group P21/n) exhibits inconspicuous [Na(12-crown-4)2]+ cations and, as a striking feature, supramolecular anions assembled from a central (PhSO2)2N− ion, two MeOH molecules flanking the amide anion, and two HN (SO2Ph)2 molecules bonded to the MeOH moieties. The assembly is held together by two N -H ··· O(H )(Me) bonds, one MeO -H ··· N− bond and one MeO -H ··· O(anion) interaction. For both structures, conformational peculiarities of the N(SO2C)2 groups are discussed.

As the amount of PVA microcrystals increases, the network structure changes from being dual-crosslinked (for pure PAA hydrogels) to ternary-crosslinked and finally to a double network structure, as shown by the step-increased modulus of the hydrogels.
