In this paper we design, simulate, and analyze single-mode microring resonators in thin films of z-cut lithium tantalate. They operate at wavelengths that are approximately equal to 1.55 μm. The single-mode conditions and transmission losses of lithium tantalate waveguides are simulated for different geometric parameters and silica thicknesses. An analysis is presented on the quality factor and free spectral range of the microring resonators in lithium tantalate at contrasting radii and gap sizes. The electro-optical modulation performance is analyzed for microring resonators with a radius of 20 μm. Since they have important practical applications, the filtering characteristics of the microring resonators that contain two straight waveguides are analyzed. This work enhances the knowledge of lithium tantalate microring structures and offers guidance on the salient parameters for the fabrication of highly efficient multifunctional photonic integrated devices, such as tunable filters and modulators.

The single-mode microring resonators on lithium niobate thin films were designed and simulated using 2.5-D variational finite difference time domain mode simulations from Lumerical mode Solutions. The single-mode conditions and the propagation losses of lithium niobate planar waveguide with different SiO2 cladding layer thicknesses were studied and compared systematically. The optimization of design parameters such as radii of microrings and gap sizes between channel and ring waveguides were determined. The key issues affecting the resonator design such as free spectral range and Quality Factor were discussed. The microring resonators had radius R = 20 μm, and their transmission spectrum had been tuned using the electro-optical effect.

Flexible photonics is rapidly emerging as a promising platform for artificial smart skins to imitate or extend the capabilities of human skins. Organic material systems provide a promising avenue to directly fabricate large-scale flexible device units; however, the versatile fabrication of all-organic integrated devices with desired photonic functionalities remains a great challenge. Here, we develop an effective technique for the mass processing of organic microlaser arrays, which act as sensing units, on the chip of photonic skins. With a bilayer electron-beam direct writing method, we fabricated flexible mechanical sensor networks composed of coupled-cavity single-mode laser sources on pliable polymer substrates. These microlaser-based mechanical sensor chips were subsequently used to recognize hand gestures, showing great potential for artificial skin applications. This work represents a substantial advance toward scalable construction of high-performance and low-cost flexible photonic chips, thus paving the way for the implementation of smart photonic skins into practical applications.

The low-temperature processability of molecular ferroelectric (FE) crystals makes them a potential alternative for perovskite oxide-based ferroelectric thin films. Quinuclidinium perrhenate (HQReO4) is one such molecular FE crystal that exhibits ferroelectricity when crystallized in an intermediate temperature phase (ITP). However, bulk HQReO4 crystals exhibit ferroelectricity only for a narrow temperature window (22 K), above and below which the polar phase transforms to a non-FE phase. The FE phase or ITP of HQReO4 should be stabilized in a much wider temperature range for practical applications. Here, to stabilize the FE phase (ITP) in a wider temperature range, highly oriented thin films of HQReO4 were prepared using a simple solution process. A slow evaporation method was adapted for drying the HQReO4 thin films to control the morphology and the temperature window. The temperature window of the intermediate temperature FE phase was successfully widened up to 35 K by merely varying the film drying temperature between 333 and 353 K. The strategy of stabilizing the FE phase in a wider temperature range can be adapted to other molecular FE materials to realize flexible electronic devices.

A new measurement technique of electrical parameters of superconducting thin films at the Very High Frequency (VHF) range is described, based on resonators with microstrip (MS) structures. The design of an optimal resonator was achieved, based on a thorough theoretical analysis, which is required for derivation of the exact configuration of the MS. A theoretical model is presented, from which an expression for the attenuation of a MS line can be derived. Accordingly, simulations were performed, and an optimal resonator for the VHF range was designed and implemented. Production constraints of YBa2Cu3O7 (YBCO) limited the diameter of the sapphire substrate to 3″. Therefore, a meander configuration was formed to fit the long λ/4 MS line on the wafer. By measuring the complex input reflection coefficients of a λ/4 resonator, we extracted the quality factor, which is mainly affected by the dielectric and conductor attenuations. The experimental results are well fitted by the theoretical model. The dielectric attenuation was calculated using the quasi-static analysis of the MS line. An identical copper resonator was produced and measured to compare the properties of the YBCO resonator in reference to the copper one. A quality factor of ~6·105 was calculated for the YBCO resonator, three orders of magnitude larger than that of the copper resonator. The attenuation per unit length of the YBCO layer was smaller by more than five orders of magnitude than that of the copper.

The Ion Beam Enhanced Deposited (IBED) lithium tantalate (LiTaO3) thin film samples with Al/LiTaO3/Pt electrode structure were prepared on the Pt/Ti/SiO2/Si(100) and SiO2/Si(100) substrate respectively. The crystallization, surface morphology, ferroelectric property, and fatigue property of the prepared samples with the different annealed processes were investigated. The XRD measured results show that the prepared samples have the polycrystal structure of LiTaO3 with the preferred orientation of <012> and <104> located at the 2θ of 23.60 and 32.70 respectively. The SEM morphology analysis reveals the prepared film annealed at 550°C is uniform, smooth and crack-free on the surface and cross section. The ferroelectric property measured results show that the remanent polarization Pr of the samples annealed at different temperature almost increase with the electric field intensity stronger. The leakage current makes the hysteresis loop of the samples subjected to a strong measured electric filed difficult to appear the same saturation hysteresis loop as the single-crystal LiTaO3. The prepared samples annealed at 550°C have a Pr value of 11.5μC/cm2 when subjected to the electrical field of 400kV/cm. The breakdown voltage of the 587nm thick thin film sample is high as to 680 kV/cm. The fatigue property measured results show only 15.17% Pr drop of the prepared films annealed at 550°C appear after 5×1010 cycles polarized by the 10MHz sinusoidal signal with the peak-to-peak amplitude of 10 Volt. The ferroelectric properties of the prepared films meet the practical application requirements of charge response measurement of the LiTaO3 infrared detector owe to the Pr of the prepared films annealed at different temperature large beyond 10μC/cm2 when the prepared films subjected to a strong electric filed larger than 400 kV/cm. The experimental results also show that the surface morphology, the ferroelectric and fatigue properties of the IBED LiTaO3 thin films are significant better than those of the Sol-Gel derived LiTaO3 thin films.
