Ti3SiC2 ceramic and copper were successfully vacuum brazed using Ag-Cu-Ti filler and Ag-Cu-Ti filler with copper mesh, respectively. In this study, the effects of copper mesh and brazing parameters on the interface microstructure and mechanical properties of the joints were systematically studied. The results revealed that the typical interfacial microstructure of joint was Ti3SiC2 ceramic/Ti5Si3 + TiC + Ti2Cu + Ti3Cu/Ag (s, s) + Cu (s, s)/eutectic Ag-Cu + TiSiCu/Cu. A maximum shear strength of joint obtained at a brazing temperature of 870 °C and a holding time of 10 min can reached up to 66.3 ± 1.2 MPa, which was 34.7% higher than that without copper mesh. The improvement of mechanical property was attributed to the extraordinary plasticity of copper mesh, which reduced the residual stress caused by the difference in the coefficient of thermal expansion at the interface of joints. As the brazing temperature and holding time further increased, the shear strength of joints decreased due to the excessively thick reaction layer of intermetallic compounds.

Reliable ceramics/metal joints have an extensive application in the aerospace and biomedical area. However, ZrO2ceramic has not been investigated systematically compared to the Si3N4and Al2O3ceramic. Therefore, successful brazing of ZrO2ceramic and Ti-6A-4V alloy was achieved by using a binary active Ti-28Ni filler metal in this paper. The effect of holding time on the microstructure of ZrO2 ceramic/filler metal interface and mechanical properties of brazed joints was investigated. The results indicated that the representative interfacial microstructure was ZrO2ceramic/Ti2O/Ni2Ti4O/Ti-rich phase/Ti2Ni+α-Ti. With the increase of holding time, the thickness of Ti-rich layer in the interface of ZrO2/Ti-6Al-4Vjoint decreased obviously due to the diffusion of Ti atoms. Substantial brittle intermetallic compounds Ti2Ni and Ni2Ti4O were formed in the joint, which were detrimental to the mechanical properties of the brazed joints. The maximum shear strength of joint was 112.7 MPa when brazed at 1060 °C for 10 min.

The effect of rolling temperatures on the interface microstructure and mechanical properties is investigated using 2-mm-thick TA1/Q235B composite sheets, which were prepared after nine passes of hot rolling of explosive welded plates. The results show that the vortex region and the transition layer exist in the interface at the explosive welded plate, while only the transition layer exists in the interface after hot rolling. The transition layer is composed of α-Ti, TiC, Fe, and FeTi, and the thickness increases with the increasing rolling temperature. The microhardness of the explosive welded plate is higher than that of the hot-rolling sheet, and the microhardness of interface are higher than that of matrix metals. The interface shear strength and tensile elongation of the hot-rolled sheet increase with the increasing hot rolling temperature, while the ultimate tensile strength (UTS), yield strength (YS) and Young modulus decrease with the increase of hot rolling temperature. The shear strength of sheets is related to the interfacial compounds, and the tensile strength is mainly affected by the grain morphology of the matrix.

LY12/TC4 joints have wide applications in many industrial areas such as aerospace, nuclear and chemical industries. In the present study, TC4 alloy and LY12 alloy with and without aluminum thin film was produced under low temperature of 380 oC. The microstructure and mechanical properties of the joints were investigated. The addition of the Al thin interlayer had largely improved the interfacial microstructure and shear strength of the joints. The average shear strength of LY12/Al/TC4 joints was 64.3 MPa which was 2.5 times larger than the LY12/TC4 joints’ strength. The shear fracture mainly occurred on the interface of LY12 and TC4 from the XRD result of fracture surfaces.

TiAl alloy was successfully brazed with Ag-CuO filler in air atmosphere under simple technical conditions. The wettability of a series of Ag-CuO fillers on TiAl was analyzed. Ag-2mol%CuO filler possessed good wetting behavior on TiAl alloy. The microstructure and mechanical properties of the brazed joints were investigated. Oxide layers can be found on both sides, which can be divided into external TiO2-rich layer and internal Al2O3-rich layer. The maximum shear strength of the joint was obtained at 1020 °C holding for 20 min.

The development of welding technology for zirconium alloy has great significance on the safety, stability, and reliability of the operation of the nuclear reactor. In this work, vacuum diffusion bonding of Zr-4 alloy was studied at the diffusion temperature ranging from 760 to 820 °C with holding times of 30–90 min. The effects of diffusion bonding temperature and holding time on the interfacial microstructure and mechanical properties of the diffusion bonded Zr-4 alloy joints were investigated in detail, and the relationship between the interfacial microstructure and shear strength of the diffusion bonded joints was discussed. The results show that the interface bonding ratio of the diffusion bonded Zr-4 joint gradually increased from 74% to 95% with the increasing of bonding temperature. In addition, the grain size of the base material became a larger and brittle second phase composed of Zr(Cr, Fe)2 and eutectic α-Zr + Zr(Fe, Cr)2 formed in the joint with the increase of the temperature as well as the extension of the bonding time. The highest shear strength of 349 MPa was obtained at 800 °C for 30 min under 7 MPa, and the crack of the joint was primarily propagated along with the base material rather than the bonded interface.

In this study, reliable Ti2AlNb/high-Nb-containing TiAl alloy (TAN) joints were achieved by diffusion bonding. The effects of bonding temperature and holding time on the interfacial microstructure and mechanical properties were fully investigated. The interfacial structure of joints bonded at various temperatures and holding times was characterized by scanning electron microscopy (SEM), energy dispersive spectrometer (EDS) and X-ray diffraction (XRD). The results show that the typical microstructure of the Ti2AlNb substrate/O phase/Al(Nb,Ti)2 + Ti3Al/Ti3Al/TAN substrate was obtained at 970 °C for 60 min under a pressure of 5 MPa. The formation of the O phase was earlier than the Al(Nb,Ti)2 phase when bonding temperature was relatively low. When bonding temperature was high enough, the Al(Nb,Ti)2 phase appeared earlier than the O phase. With the increase of bonding temperature and holding time, the Al(Nb,Ti)2 phase decomposed gradually. As the same time, continuous O phase layers became discontinuous and the Ti3Al phase coarsened. The maximum bonding strength of 66.1 MPa was achieved at 970 °C for 120 min.

Titanium alloys used to be welded to gain good joint strength at 920 °C through diffusion bonding. However, due to the heat preservation at high temperatures for a long time, we obtain joints with great bond strength while the mechanical properties of the sheet are lost. In this paper, taking Ti6Al4V alloy as an example, we studied the microstructure of the surface under the different times of surface mechanical attrition treatment (SMAT). In addition, the microstructure and mechanical properties after diffusion bonding at 800 °C-5 MPa-1 h were also conducted. The results show that the shear strength of TC4 alloy welded joint after SMAT treatment is improved, and the maximum shear strength can reach 797.7 MPa, up about 32.4%
