Skin hydration is a complex process that influences the physical and mechanical properties of skin. Various technologies have emerged over the years to assess this parameter, with the current standard being electrical probe-based instruments. Nevertheless, their inability to provide detailed information has prompted the use of sophisticated spectroscopic and imaging methodologies, which are capable of in-depth skin analysis that includes structural and composition details. Modern imaging and spectroscopic techniques have transformed skin research in the dermatological and cosmetics disciplines, and are now commonly employed in conjunction with traditional methods for comprehensive assessment of both healthy and pathological skin. This article reviews current techniques employed in measuring skin hydration, and gives an account on their principle of operation and applications in skin-related research.

Sintering has major effect on the final properties of materials such as density, porosity and microstructure. Sintering of Mg-Si CHA in particular is a complex process since changes could occur during sintering, which include phase formation, grain size, pore size and carbonate content, and this in turn affects the mechanical properties. Improved mechanical properties of Mg-Si CHA is critical in load bearing implant applications. Poor control of thermal treatment of Mg-Si CHA during sintering would cause carbonate loss, leading to partial or total decomposition of Mg-Si CHA, subsequently would affect the physical and mechanical properties. The influence of powder properties (particle size, porosity, morphology) and sintering parameters (heating rate, firing atmosphere) on the sintered Mg-Si CHA microstructure was studied using scanning electron microscopy (SEM) characterization technique. The SEM results showed that we are able to produce sintered Mg-Si CHA without cracking of the compacted pellets, while keeping the carbonate level in the amount required (2 – 8%). X-Ray diffraction (XRD) was also performed on the sintered samples and the results indicated that a single phase Mg-Si-CHA was obtained, while Fourier transform infra-red (FTIR) spectroscopy result confirmed that as-synthesized Mg-Si CHA powder was a B-type.

The properties of high-strength artificial porous aggregate from glass-containing waste of metallurgical productions are described. The developed technology makes it possible to expand the raw material base for the production of aggregates for light concrete. Granulated slags of metallurgical productions – the main (M0>1) slags of the Novokuznetsk Iron and Steel Plant and acid (M0<1) slags of the Gorky plant are studied. According to the results of studies, it was found that the optimal swelling interval for acidic slags is 1000–1100оC, and for basic slags-1100–1150оC. A high – strength artificial porous aggregate-slag gravel with a bulk density of 340–780 kg/m3 and a compressive strength in the cylinder of 2.8–12.3 MPa was obtained. The main physical and mechanical properties of the resulting aggregate, which meets the requirements of the current standard GOST 9757–90 “Gravel, crushed stone and sand. Artificial porous”, were studied. The aggregate obtained is almost twice as strong as the known aggregate of expanded clay gravel. With the use of porous gravel and sand, light concrete of strength class B7,5–B40 and a density of 1100–1600 kg/m3 was obtained.

An amoprphous and nanocrystalline ribbon is produced applying the technology of rapid molten metal quenching. The chemical composition of the alloy is required to contain elements ensuring the amorphous structure formation in the course of quenching. A great number of various chemical elements in amorphous and nanocrystalline alloys contribute to the complex process of the structure formation in the course of heat treatment of the amorphous precursor. After heat treatment, the structure of the soft magnetic material can remain amorphous or partially crystallized or nanocrystalline. The results of an investigation into the melts’ property of iron-based amorphous and nanocrystalline alloys are presented in the paper. The structure has been shown to influence mechanical properties of the material in preparing the melt before casting.

A comprehensive assessment of the rocks of mine dumps was carried out. The physical and mechanical properties of rocks as raw materials for the device of the roadbed of the access railway are investigated. Given the properties of the graded crushed stone and screenings from the crushing of mine rock. The possibility of using mine rocks instead of soil in the roadbed is substantiated. Features of hardening of the massif of a roadbed from mine breeds are shown. The technology of the device of an earthen cloth is stated. The successful operation of the access section of the railway track with a length of 27 km confirms the feasibility of using mine rocks for the construction of the roadbed. The use of rocks of mine dumps allows to solve some environmental problems: to reduce the number of quarries for the extraction of natural raw materials, to preserve the natural landscape of the earth’s surface, to free the land from the dumps, to reduce the pollution of water and air basins.

Timber Acacia mangium (Acacia mangium, Willd) for Furniture. The study aims to determine the mechanical and physical properties and the decorative value (color and fiber) wood of acacia mangium with using finishing materials. This type of finishing material used is ultran lasur natural dof ,ultran lasur classic teak, aqua politur clear dof, aqua politur akasia dan aqua politur cherry. After finishing the wood is stored for 3 months. Test parameters were observed, namely, physical and mechanical properties of wood, adhesion of finishing materials, color and appearance of the fiber, and timber dimensions expansion. The results showed that the mechanical physical properties of acacia wood qualified SNI. 01-0608-89 about the physical and mechanical properties of wood for furniture, air dry the moisture content from 13.78 to 14.89%, flexural strength from 509.25 to 680.50 kg/cm2, and compressive strength parallel to fiber 342.1 - 412.9 kg/cm2. Finishing the treatment process using five types of finishing materials can increase the decorative value (color and fiber) wood. Before finishing the process of acacia mangium wood has the appearance of colors and fibers and less attractive (scale scores 2-3), after finishing acacia wood fibers have the appearance of colors and interesting and very interesting (scale 4-5).Keywords: mangium wood, mechanical properties, decorative value, finishing, furniture.

An investigation on the properties of Tenun Pahang fabric performances using alternative yarns was conducted. The studies were made in order to evaluate whether the Tenun Pahang fabric could be produced economically and at the same time maintain the fabric quality. Traditional Tenun Pahang fabric uses silk for both warp and weft. For this project, two alternative yarns were used which were bamboo and modal, which were a little lower in cost compared to silk. These yarns were woven with two variations, one with the yarns as weft only while maintaining the silk warp and the other with both warp and weft using the alternative yarns. Four (4) physical testings and three (3) mechanical testings conducted on the fabric samples. The fabric samples were evaluated including weight, thickness, thread density, crease recovery angle, stiffness and drapability. The results show that modal/silk and bamboo silk fabrics are comparable in terms of stiffness and drapability, hence they have the potential to replace 100% silk Tenun Pahang.
