Amino ethers of ortho-phosphoric acid prepared using triethanolamine; ortho-phosphoric acid; polyoxyethylene glycol, diethylene glycol, triethylene glycol and glycerol (AEPA-DEG/TEG/Gl) were investigated as extractants for the separation of aqueous ethanol solutions by extractive distillation. Using the method of open evaporation, the influence of the molecular structure of AEPA-DEG/TEG/Gl on the conditions of vapor–liquid equilibrium in ethanol–water solutions was studied. It has been shown that the addition of AEPA-DEG/TEG/Gl removes the azeotropic point. At the same time, the observed effect turned out to be significantly higher in comparison with the use of pure glycerol or glycols for these purposes. The UNIFAC model was used to calculate the activity coefficients in a three-component ethanol–water–AEPA-DEG/TEG/Gl mixture. Within the framework of this model, a division of AEPA-DEG/TEG/Gl molecules into group components is proposed. Previously unknown parameters of the groups PO–CH, PO–CH2, PO–OCH2, PO–NHCH2, PO–OH, and PO–H2O were determined from our own and published experimental data. The concentration dependences of the density and dynamic viscosity of AEPA-Gl aqueous solutions have been experimentally measured. Experimental studies of the extractive distillation of ethanol–water using AEPA-Gl as an extractant have been carried out in a column with bubble cap plates and a packing, and its high efficiency has been established.

Air heat exchangers (HXs) are applicable in many industrial sectors because they offer a simple, reliable, and cost-effective cooling system. Additive manufacturing (AM) systems have significant potential in the construction of high-efficiency, lightweight HXs; however, HXs still mainly rely on conventional manufacturing (CM) systems such as milling, and brazing. This is due to the fact that little is known regarding the effects of AM on the performance of AM fabricated HXs. In this research, three air HXs comprising of a single fin fabricated from stainless steel 316 L using AM and CM methods—i.e., the HXs were fabricated by both direct metal printing and milling. To evaluate the fabricated HXs, microstructure images of the HXs were investigated, and the surface roughness of the samples was measured. Furthermore, an experimental test rig was designed and manufactured to conduct the experimental studies, and the thermal performance was investigated using four characteristics: heat transfer coefficient, Nusselt number, thermal fluid dynamic performance, and friction factor. The results showed that the manufacturing method has a considerable effect on the HX thermal performance. Furthermore, the surface roughness and distribution, and quantity of internal voids, which might be created during and after the printing process, affect the performance of HXs.

AbstractThis paper presents experimental studies on the optimization of air–water flow in an airlift pump. Airlift pumps use compressed gas to verticall transport liquids and slurries. Due to the lack of theoretical equations for designing and predicting flow regimes, experimental investigations must be carried out to find the best condition to operate an airlift pump at high efficiency. We used a new air injection system and different submergence ratios to evaluate the output of a simple pump for vertical displacement of water in an underground mine. The tests were carried out in a new device with 5.64 m height and 10.2 cm circular riser pipe. Three air-jacket pipes, at different gas flows in the range of 0.002–0.09 m3/s were investigated with eight submergence ratios. It was found that with the same air flow rate, the most efficient flow of water was achieved when an air jacket with 3 mm diameter holes was used with a submergence ratio between 0.6 and 0.75. In addition, a comparison of practical results with two theoretical models proposed by other investigators showed that neither was able to accurately predict airlift performance in air–water flow mode.

Purpose The problem of parameter identification for biaxial piezoelectric stages is still a challenging task because of the existing hysteresis, dynamics and cross-axis coupling. This study aims to find an accurate and systematic approach to tackle this problem. Design/methodology/approach First, a dual-input and dual-output (DIDO) model with Duhem-type hysteresis is proposed to depict the dynamic behavior of the biaxial piezoelectric stage. Then, a systematic identification approach based on a modified differential evolution (DE) algorithm is proposed to identify the unknown parameters of the Duhem-type DIDO model for a biaxial piezostage. The randomness and parallelism of the modified DE algorithm guarantee its high efficiency. Findings The experimental results show that the characteristics of the biaxial piezoelectric stage can be identified with adequate accuracy based on the input–output data, and the peak-valley errors account for 2.8% of the full range in the X direction and 1.5% in the Y direction. The attained results validated the correctness and effectiveness of the presented identification method. Originality/value The classical DE algorithm has many adjustment parameters, which increases the inconvenience and difficulty of using in practice. The parameter identification of Duhem-type DIDO piezoelectric model is rarely studied in detail and its successful application based on DE algorithm on a biaxial piezostage is hitherto unexplored. To close this gap, this work proposed a modified DE-based systematic identification approach. It not only can identify this complicated model with more parameters, but also has little tuning parameters and thus is easy to use.

In order to research the possibility of separating the azeotrope of ethyl acetate + acetonitrile with ionic liquid as the extractant. Isobaric vapor-liquid equilibria for the ternary system ethyl acetate + acetonitrile + 1-octyl-3-methylimidazolium tetrafluoroborate ([OMIBF4) were measured at 101.32 kPa using a recirculation still. The results showed that the VLE of the ternary system was different from that of the binary system. The ionic liquid (IL) studied showed a slight crossover salt effect, which changed the relative volatility of ethyl acetate to acetonitrile and eliminated the azeotropic point when the mole fraction of IL in the liquid phase was greater than 0.05. Therefore, [OMIBF4 can be used as the extractant of extractive distillation for ethyl acetate + acetonitrile system, the suitable mole fraction of [OMIBF4 is about 10%.

The successful development of fiber-optic technologies in recent decades has stimulated research on the replacement of components of solid-state laser systems with fiber components, which can drastically change the attractiveness of the corresponding applied developments. Yielding on the energy characteristics of solid-state systems, fiber lasers and nonlinear optical devices have high efficiency of conversion of pump energy to radiation energy associated with waveguide geometry, high quality of the spatial profile of the laser beam, as well as low cost, compactness, lack of alignment in work process. Note that the maximum achievable radiation power in a single fiber is limited primarily by the process of self-focusing, which leads to fiber damage. The use of a multi-core fiber (MCF), consisting of identical equidistant weakly coupled optical fibers, makes it possible to realize initially coherent propagation of laser radiation with a total power noticeably higher than it can be transmitted in a single optical fiber. However, as theoretical and experimental studies have shown, such systems have its own critical power (Balakin et al., 2016) whereby the self-focusing of the quasihomogeneous distribution of the wave field and its separation into a set of incoherent structures occurs. Therefore, we have considered a small-sized optical system of 2N identical weakly coupled optical fibers arranged in a ring (Balakin et. al., 2018). In such systems, it is possible to find stable distributions of intense wave beams, which allow coherent radiation transport over long distances. The total radiation power in the found distributions can significantly (up to 2N times) exceed the critical self-focusing power in continuous media. This manifests itself most clearly for the distribution of un ~ (-1)n with antiphase fields in neighboring waveguides, which is stable at an arbitrary wave beam power. Direct numerical simulation of a nonlinear wave equation confirms the stability of the field distributions found. The research was supported by the RAS Presidium Program «Nonlinear dynamics: fundamental problems and applications».

Experimental studies of the kinetics and mechanism of the process, decomposition of apatite by phosphoric acid, in the Apatite-H3PO4-H2O system without the addition of sulfuric acid have been performed. The study of the decomposition process of Kovdorsky apatite with certain particle sizes was carried out in a batch reactor with a volume of 1 dm3 with stirring of the reaction mixture, and an initial concentration of phosphoric acid of 17% by weight, at a temperature of 78–82 °C. Observation of the process was carried out by determining the concentration of phosphoric acid and the concentration of monocalcium phosphate. The acidity of the reaction mixture was determined by the pH meter readings (pH-105 MA with a glass combined-ESC-10603 electrode). It was shown that during the whole process a constant smooth increase in the pH value of the reaction mixture to pH 6 occurs. Comparison of the pH values of the reaction mixture during the actual at the time of determining the concentration of phosphoric acid and pH of phosphoric acid of the corresponding concentration in the aqueous solution shows that the pH value of the reaction mixture is significantly affected by the presence of monocalcium phosphate gel. During the process, during the first thirty minutes, the concentration of phosphoric acid decreases from 17 to 10% by weight, the corresponding quantitative formation of monocalcium phosphate gel and a proportional increase in the pH of the reaction mixture. Then, as the concentration of phosphoric acid decreases, the process slows down and does not proceed to the end under the experimental conditions. The dependence of the concentration of hydrogen ions in the reaction mixture on the time of the process of decomposition of apatite in phosphoric acid, which is presented in logarithmic coordinates, shows that the mechanism of formation of hydrogen ions during the whole process does not change. Thus, it is shown that the process of decomposition of apatite by phosphoric acid in the Apatite-H3PO4-H2O system proceeds with the formation of an intermediate product - monocalcium phosphate gel. When this occurs, a corresponding significant change in the pH values of the reaction mixture occurs. During the whole process there is a constant decrease in the concentration of phosphoric acid.

Early detection of timber damage is essential for the safety of timber structures. In recent decades, wave-based approaches have shown great potential for structural damage assessment. Current damage assessment accuracy based on sensing signals in the time domain is highly affected by the varied boundary conditions and environmental factors in practical applications. In this research, a novel piezoceramic-based sensing technology combined with a visual domain network was developed to quantitatively evaluate timber damage conditions. Numerical and experimental studies reveal the stress wave propagation properties in different cases of timber crack depths. Through the spectrogram visualization process, all sensing signals in the time domain were transferred to images which contain both time and frequency features of signals collected from different crack conditions. A deep neural network (DNN) was adopted for image training, testing, and classification. The classification results show high efficiency and accuracy for identifying crack conditions for timber structures. The proposed technology can be further integrated with a fielding sensing system to provide real-time monitoring of timber damage in field applications.
