It is necessary to complete the two parts of gesture recognition and wireless remote control to realize the gesture control of the automatic pruning machine. To realize gesture recognition, in this paper, we have carried out the research of gesture recognition technology based on surface electromyography signal, and discussed the influence of different numbers and different gesture combinations on the optimal size. We have calculated the 630-dimensional eigenvector from the benchmark scientific database of sEMG signals and extracted the features using principal component analysis (PCA). Discriminant analysis (DA) has been used to compare the processing effects of each feature extraction method. The experimental results have shown that the recognition rate of four gestures can reach 100.0%, the recognition rate of six gestures can reach 98.29%, and the optimal size is 516~523 dimensions. This study lays a foundation for the follow-up work of the pruning machine gesture control, and p rovides a compelling new way to promote the creative and human computer interaction process of forestry machinery.

To address the problem that the dimension of the feature vector extracted by Local Binary Pattern (LBP) for face recognition is too high and Principal Component Analysis (PCA) extract features are not the best classification features, an efficient feature extraction method using LBP, PCA and Maximum scatter difference (MSD) has been introduced in this paper. The original face image is firstly divided into sub-images, then the LBP operator is applied to extract the histogram feature. and the feature dimensions are further reduced by using PCA. Finally,MSD is performed on the reduced PCA-based feature. The experimental results on ORL and Yale database demonstrate that the proposed method can classify more effectively and can get higher recognition rate than the traditional recognition methods.

Adaboost Viola-Jones method is indeed a profound discovery in detecting face images mainly because it is fast, light and one of the easiest methods of detecting face images among other techniques of face detection. Viola Jones uses Haar wavelet filter to detect face images and it produces almost 80%accuracy of face detection. This paper discusses proposed methodology and algorithms that involved larger library of filters used to create more discrimination features among the images by processing the proposed 15 Haar rectangular features (an extension from 4 Haar wavelet filters of Viola Jones) and used them in multiple adaptive ensemble process of detecting face image. After facial detection, the process continues with normalization processes by applying feature extraction such as PCA combined with LDA or LPP to extract our week learners’ wavelet for more classification features. Upon the process of feature extraction proposed feature selection to index these extracted data. These extracted vectors are used for training and creating MADBoost (Multiple Adaptive Diversified Boost)(an improvement of Adaboost, which uses multiple feature extraction methods combined with multiple classifiers) is able to capture, recognize and distinguish face image (s) faster. MADBoost applies the ensemble approach with better weights for classification to produce better face recognition results. Three experiments have been conducted to investigate the performance of the proposed MADBoost with three other classifiers, Neural Network (NN), Support Vector Machines (SVM) and Adaboost classifiers using Principal Component Analysis (PCA) as the feature extraction method. These experiments were tested against obstacles of POIES (Pose, Obstruction, Illumination, Expression, Sizes). Based on the results obtained, Madboost is found to be able to improve the recognition performance in matching failures, incorrect matching, matching success percentages and acceptable time taken to perform the classification task.

Feature extraction is a key procedure in the fault diagnosis of rotating machinery. To obtain fault features with lower dimensionality and higher sensitivity, a feature extraction method based on adaptive multiwavelets transform (AMWT) and local tangent space alignment (LTSA) is proposed in this paper. AMWT is first used to obtain multiple features from the vibration signals of the machine under test to form a high-dimensional feature set. Then, in order to avoid the adverse effect of the irrelevant features in this high-dimensional feature set on the fault diagnosis result, a detection index (DI) is investigated to evaluate the sensitivity of the features and those with lower sensitivity are removed. After that, LTSA is applied for feature fusion to reduce the redundant features in the high-dimensional feature set. To validate the proposed method, performance of four feature extraction schemes based on (i) wavelet and LTSA, (ii) Geronimo, Hardin, and Massopust (GHM) multiwavelets and LTSA, (iii) AMWT and principal component analysis (PCA), and (iv) AMWT and multidimensional scaling (MDS) is compared with the proposed method. The feature extraction results by these methods are then fed into K-medoids classifier to discriminate the faults. The results show that the proposed method can improve the sensitivity of the extracted features and obtain higher fault recognition rate.

This paper proposes a new feature extraction method for off-line recognition of Myanmar printed documents. One of the most important factors to achieve high recognition performance in Optical Character Recognition (OCR) system is the selection of the feature extraction methods. Different types of existing OCR systems used various feature extraction methods because of the diversity of the scripts’ natures. One major contribution of the work in this paper is the design of logically rigorous coding based features. To show the effectiveness of the proposed method, this paper assumed the documents are successfully segmented into characters and extracted features from these isolated Myanmar characters. These features are extracted using structural analysis of the Myanmar scripts. The experimental results have been carried out using the Support Vector Machine (SVM) classifier and compare the pervious proposed feature extraction method.

Acoustic emission (AE) techniques are put forward to monitor rub-impacts between rotating rings and stationary rings of mechanical seals by this paper. By analyzing feature extraction methods of the typical rub-impact AE signal, the method combining of wavelet scalogram and power spectrum is found useful, and can used to attribute the feature information implicated in rub-impact AE signals of mechanical seal end faces. Both simulations and experimental research prove that the method is effective, and are used successfully to identify the typical features of different types of rub-impacts of mechanical seal end faces.

The purpose of the chapter is to present a novel method to classify lung diseases from the computed tomography images which assist physicians in the diagnosis of lung diseases. The method is based on a new approach which combines a proposed M2 feature extraction method and a novel hybrid genetic approach with different types of classifiers. The feature extraction methods performed in this work are moment invariants, proposed multiscale filter method and proposed M2 feature extraction method. The essential features which are the results of the feature extraction technique are selected by the novel hybrid genetic algorithm feature selection algorithms. Classification is performed by the support vector machine, multilayer perceptron neural network and Bayes Net classifiers. The result obtained proves that the proposed technique is an efficient and robust method. The performance of the proposed M2 feature extraction with proposed hybrid GA and SVM classifier combination achieves maximum classification accuracy.

Facial feature extraction and recognition plays a prominent role in human non-verbal interaction and it is one of the crucial factors among pose, speech, facial expression, behaviour and actions which are used in conveying information about the intentions and emotions of a human being. In this article an extended local binary pattern is used for the feature extraction process and a principal component analysis (PCA) is used for dimensionality reduction. The projections of the sample and model images are calculated and compared by Euclidean distance method. The combination of extended local binary pattern and PCA (ELBP+PCA) improves the accuracy of the recognition rate and also diminishes the evaluation complexity. The evaluation of proposed facial expression recognition approach will focus on the performance of the recognition rate. A series of tests are performed for the validation of algorithms and to compare the accuracy of the methods on the JAFFE, Extended Cohn-Kanade images database.

As a key component to ensure the safe operation of the power grid, mechanical defect diagnosis technology of gas-insulated switchgear (GIS) during operation is often neglected. At present, GIS mechanical fault detection based on vibration information has not been developed. The main reason is that the excitation current is considerable but uncontrollable in the actual operation of GIS. It is difficult to eliminate the influence of excitation on the vibration amplitude and form an effective vibration feature description technology. Therefore, this paper proposes a unified feature-extraction method for GIS vibration information that reduces the influence of current amplitude for mechanical fault diagnosis. Starting from the GIS mechanical analysis, the periodicity of vibration excitation and the influence of amplitude are discussed. Then, combined with the non-linear characteristics of GIS systems and non-linear vibration theory, the multiplier frequency energy ratio (MFER) is designed to extract vibration-unified features of GIS for diagnosing the mechanical fault under different current levels. The diagnosis results of the experimental data with different feature-extraction methods show the applicability and superiority of the proposed method in the GIS’s mechanical fault-detection field based on vibration information.
