The dynamic behaviour of membranes has been widely studied by well-known authors for a long time. A clear distinction can be made between the behaviour of membranes without tension (plate case) and membranes subjected to large tension or pre-strain in their plane (membrane case). In classical theories, less attention has been paid to membranes subjected to a low level of tension, which solution is between both extreme cases. Recently, certain fields of research are demanding solutions for this intermediate behaviour. It is the case of membranes present in MEMS and sensor or the response of the tympanic membrane in mammals hearing system. In this paper, the behaviour of plates and circular membranes with boundary conditions clamped in the edges has been studied. The natural frequencies for both cases (plate and membrane) have been calculated using the solutions of the traditional theories and these have been compared with the numerical frequencies calculated by finite element analysis. The dynamic response of membrane with low tension, corresponding to a transition between these extreme behaviours, has also been calculated. A theoretical solution has been used complemented with a wide set of numerical finite elements calculations. The analytical and numerical solutions are very close, being the error made using both methods very low; nevertheless, there are no analytical solutions for the entire transition zone between the plate and membrane behaviour. Therefore, this range has been completed using finite element analysis. Broad ranges of geometric configurations have been studied. The transition behaviour of the membrane has been clearly identified. The main practical consequences of these results have been discussed, in particular focused on the response of the tympanic membrane.

The influence of adhesive layer thickness on the dynamic behaviour of the single-lap adhesive joints is investigated in this paper. The ABAQUS finite element analysis (FEA) software was used to predict the frequency response functions (FRFs) of the single-lap adhesive joints of different thickness of the adhesive layer. As a reference, the FRFs of a cantilevered beam without joint were investigated as well. It is clear that the FRFs of the four beams are close to each other within the frequency range 0~1000 Hz. It is also found that the composite damping of the single-lap adhesive joint increases as the thickness of the adhesive layer increases.

Analyzing complex 3D assembly models using finite element analysis software requires suppressing parts that are not likely to influence the analysis results, but may significantly improve the computational performance during the analysis. The part suppression step often depends on many factors within the context and application of the model. Currently, most analysts perform this step manually. This step can take a long time to perform on a complex model and can be tedious in nature. In this paper, we present an approach to multi-part suppression based on the specified criteria. We have developed utilities in Pro/Engineer CAD system to identify parts that meet the specified criteria and suppress them. We present several examples to illustrate the value of the proposed approach.

A super wedge tip element for application to a bi-material wedge is develop utilizing the thermo-mechanical stress and displacement field solutions in which the singular parts are numerical solutions. Singular stresses near apex of an arbitrary bi-material wedge under mechanical and thermal loading can be obtained from the coupling between the super wedge tip element and conventional finite elements. The validity of this novel finite element method is established through existing asymptotic solutions and conventional detailed finite element analysis.

The scaled boundary finite element method (SBFEM) is used to solve the seepage problems with multi-material regions. Two models of dam base with waterproof screen and dam body with the regions of two materials are established. The numerical solutions are obtained and then compared with the analytical results or numerical solutions in the references. The conclusion shows that the SBFEM has more satisfactory accuracy and less data preparation amount.

Present work deals with the design and analysis vibration characteristics for transport utility vehicle. The transport utility vehicle is designed using automotive industry standards. The dynamic behaviour of vehicle depends on the selection of overall dimensions, wheel base, track width, overall height and width that are decided using central motor vehicle rules. The selected dimensions for vertical and horizontal pillar members of the transport bus are modified to enhance the strength, stiffness and stability of the superstructure during travel. This increased stability enhances the ride comfort and passenger safety. Analysing the effect of utilizing manual meshing in complex areas of a transport utility vehicle for vibration analysis and passenger ride comfort has also been carried out. Modal analysis to evaluate the dynamic behaviour of transport utility vehicle model is also carried. Further with the use of finite element analysis deflection vehicle structure is evaluated. The outcomes from the analysis are compared with the behaviour of chassis mounted platform in dynamic conditions and are found in close correlation. The vehicle structure behaves as a single entity in dynamic situations, so surface model is prepared. Element selection for the finite element analysis is carried by considering plane stress condition. Two-dimensional quadrilateral shell elements are extensively used for meshing of the computer model of the vehicle structure. Complex areas in the optimised vehicle structure are meshed using relevant combination of quads and trias. The values of vector sum displacement and frequencies are found to be in good agreement with the experimental ones.

The present paper presents a finite-element formulation for earthquake-induced sloshing in horizontal-cylindrical industrial vessels. Assuming small-amplitude free-surface elevation, a linearized sloshing problem is obtained, which provides very good results in comparison with other analytical or numerical solutions, and available experimental data. The paper is aimed at calculating sloshing frequencies, as well as sloshing transient response under horizontal seismic excitation. Based on an “impulsive-convective” decomposition of the container-fluid motion, an efficient methodology is proposed for the calculation of the total seismic force, through the corresponding sloshing masses. The results from the present finite element analysis offers an efficient tool for predicting the total seismic force in horizontal cylinders and extends the current design practice for vertical cylindrical tanks stated in existing seismic design specifications.
