In most scale model tests of steel frame structures, researchers have usually paid more attention to the outcome of one single experiment rather than to the similitude error between the scale model and the prototype. As a result, only the experimental data of the scale model are obtained rather than the relationship between the scale model and the prototype, which greatly limits scale model tests in the investigation and is also a significant waste of resources. In addition, the effect of the geometric incomplete similarity in steel joints and its contribution to similitude error of the entire frame has rarely been evaluated in the past. This paper is based on similarity theory, investigating the effect of three incomplete geometric similarity factors on the similitude error between a scale model and a prototype, which are the geometric similarity of steel components, the stiffness of steel joints and the stiffness of the column base. Global sensitivity is found by calculation. Furthermore, this paper presents the correlation of the three factors mentioned based on structural sensitivity analysis by use of BP (Back Propagation) algorithm. A method to investigate the similitude error between the scale model and prototype is proposed that can correct similitude errors in the experimental results.

A shaking table model test is conducted for Guangzhou West Tower to study its seismic behavior in State Key Laboratory for Disaster Reduction in Civil Engineering at Tongji University. Guangzhou West Tower adopts a new structure system and the significant characteristic of this system is the non-perpendicular frame arranged around the building, acting both as columns and bracings. Based on the similarity theory and member equivalent principle,a 1/80 scale model of this building is made of polymethyl methacrylate(PMMA). The model’s dynamic characteristics, earthquake-resistant behavior, responses of acceleration and deformation under different wave peak values are investigated, then the seismic responses of the prototype structure are deduced and analyzed. The whiplash effect of the prototype structure is studied, and the weak position of the structure is found out. The experiment results demonstrate that it is feasible to apply this structural type to practical engineering. Finally, some suggestions for the engineering design of the prototype structure are put forward.

Due to the limitations of processing errors, test conditions and other factors, geometric similarity errors in scale tests of steel structure joints are difficult to avoid, but the research on this error is little known. Based on the similarity theory and the basic idea of the component method, this paper deduces the similar macro conditions of beam–column end-plate connections and derives the main influencing factors of geometric similarity of these types of structures. Aiming at the factor of the thickness of the end-plate, the formation mechanism of the geometrically incomplete similarity error of this type of node was studied. Through the establishment of accurate finite element models for parameterized analysis, the influence of end plate thickness on incomplete similarity error is analyzed. Based on this model and linear regression analysis methods, the prediction formulas of geometric incomplete similarity errors of beam–column end-plate connections have been established, which can significantly reduce similar errors due to end plate thickness. This article aims to propose a method for simulating the distribution of incompletely similar errors and provide a reference for the research of similar problems.

In order to verify the feasibility and validity of frequency ratio as diagnostic parameter in structural damage detection proposed in the Musical Tone Law Method (MTLM), steel pipes and three-story steel frame structure model tests are carried out. According to the experiment results, it is clear that the diagnostic parameter is effective for symmetrical structure in structural damage detection, such as cable structure, framed structure, and so on. Model tests prove that the frequency ratio is effective in detecting the 3mm width crack damage of steel pipe. In the damage detection test of three-story steel frame structure, the parameter also successfully diagnosed the damage caused by bolts loosening at the node of model.

Many deck-on-pile structures are located in shallow water depths at elevations low enough to be inundated by large waves during intense storms or tsunami. Many researchers have studied wave-in-deck loads over the past decade using a variety of theoretical, experimental, and numerical methods. Wave-in-deck loads on various pile supported coastal structures such as jetties, piers, wharves and bridges have been studied by Tirindelli et al. (2003), Cuomo et al. (2007, 2009), Murali et al. (2009), and Meng et al. (2010). All these authors analyzed data from scale model tests to investigate the pressures and loads on beam and deck elements subject to wave impact under various conditions. Wavein- deck loads on fixed offshore structures have been studied by Murray et al. (1997), Finnigan et al. (1997), Bea et al. (1999, 2001), Baarholm et al. (2004, 2009), and Raaij et al. (2007). These authors have studied both simplified and realistic deck structures using a mixture of theoretical analysis and model tests. Other researchers, including Kendon et al. (2010), Schellin et al. (2009), Lande et al. (2011) and Wemmenhove et al. (2011) have demonstrated that various CFD methods can be used to simulate the interaction of extreme waves with both simple and more realistic deck structures, and predict wave-in-deck pressures and loads.

Similarity theory is a branch of engineering science that deals with establishing conditions of similarity among phenomena and is applied to various fields, such as structural engineering problems, vibration and impact. Tests and numerical simulation of scaled models are still a valuable design tool, whose purpose is to accurately predict the behaviour of large or small prototypes through scaling laws applied to the experimental and numerical results. The aim of this paper is to predict the behaviour of the complete and incomplete similarity of stiffened cylinders by applying distorted scaling laws of the models in similitude. The investigation is performed using models based on the finite element method within commercial software. Two classes of cylinders scaled, with different laws, and, hence, reproducing replicas (exact similitude) and avatars (distorted similitude) are investigated.

Most steel beam-column connections actually show semi-rigid deformation behavior that can contribute substantially to overall displacements of the structure and to the distribution of member forces. Steel frame structure with semi-rigid connections are becoming more and more popular due to their many advantages such as the better satisfaction with the flexible architectural design, low inclusive cost and environmental protect as well. So it is very necessary that studying the behavior of those steel frame under cyclic reversal loading. On the basics of connections experiments the experiment research on the lateral resistance system of steel frame structure has been completed. Two one-second scale, one-bay, two-story steel frames with semi-rigid connections under cyclic reversal loading. The seismic behavior of the steel frames with semi-rigid connections, including the failure pattern, occurrence order of plastic hinge, hysteretic property and energy dissipation, etc, was investigated in this paper. Some conclusions were obtained that by employing top-mounted and two web angles connections, the higher distortion occurred in the frames, and the internal force distributing of beams and columns was changed, and the ductility and the absorbs seismic energy capability of steel frames can be improved effectively.

Acoustic Emission (AE) monitoring was performed during Pseudo-Dynamic Testing of a torsionally unbalanced, two-storey, one-by-one bay reinforced concrete frame structure. The structure represented a 0.7-scale model of a real-size frame structure designed and detailed according to the standards prevailing in Greece in 60's, without engineered earthquake resistance. Real time monitoring of AE activity versus the complex applied load resulted in semi quantitative damage characterization as well as comparative evaluation of the damage evolution of the different size columns. Evolution of the AE energy rate per channel, as revealed from zonal location, and the energy rate of linearly located sources enabled the identification of damage areas and the forecast of crack locations before cracks were visible with naked eye. In addition to that, the results of post processing evaluation allowed for the verification of the witnessed damaged areas and formed the basis for quantitative assessment of damage criticality.
