In aerospace fields and industrial sectors, high-speed centrifugal pumps are prevalent and in increasingly strict demand regarding characteristics such as the long life, small volume, light weight, and low noise. In this study, we present a novel high-speed centrifugal water pump with hydrodynamic bearings used to employ work fluid as lubricant. A three-dimensional numerical study of the turbulent fluid flow was carried out to predict the performance of the pump. The computational model was validated against experimental results during hydraulic tests. Additionally, the effect of the blade number on the head and efficiency of the pump was researched. The blade number of the impeller was changed from 4 to 8 and that of the stay vane was from 3 to 14. The results indicate that the blade number and the matching characteristic of the impeller and the stay vane significantly influenced the performance of the pump. The structure based on the seven-blade impeller and the six-blade stay vane had the highest efficiency (30.8%). Numerical investigations of this study may help reduce the significant cost and time of experimental work for a particular design.

The reduction of fluid-dynamic losses in high speed gearing systems is nowadays increasing importance in the design of innovative aircraft propulsion systems, which are particularly focused on improving the propulsive efficiency. Main sources of fluid-dynamic losses in high speed gearing systems are windage losses, inertial losses resulting by impinging oil jets used for jet lubrication and the losses related to the compression and the subsequent expansion of the fluid trapped between gears teeth. The numerical study of the latter is particularly challenging since it faces high speed multiphase flows interacting with moving surfaces, but it paramount for improving knowledge of the fluid behavior in such regions. The current work aims to analyze trapping losses in a gear pair by means of three-dimensional CFD simulations. In order to reduce the numerical effort, an approach for restricting computational domain was defined, thus only a portion of the gear pair geometry was discretized. Transient calculations of a gear pair rotating in an oil-free environment were performed, in the context of conventional eddy viscosity models. Results were compared with experimental data from the open literature in terms of transient pressure within a tooth space, achieving a good agreement. Finally, a strategy for meshing losses calculation was developed and results as a function of rotational speed were discussed.

The present work aims to numerically study the inlet flow recirculation and modified impeller interaction in a centrifugal pump. An optimization of modified shrouded impeller with curved disk arrangement to suppress the unsteady flow recirculation is pursued. This modification will enhance the impeller characteristics with a wider operation range at both low and high flow rates in a high speed centrifugal pump type. The unstable flow in the centrifugal pumps is a common problem that leads to damage in the pump’s internal parts, consequently increases the operating cost. At certain flow rates, generally below the Best Efficiency Point (BEP), all centrifugal pumps are subject to internal recirculation occurs at the suction and discharge areas of the impeller. For decades, experimental work has been done to investigate the complex three-dimensional flow within centrifugal pumps impellers, before computational work gains momentum due to advancement of computing power and improved numerical codes. In this study the impeller with a curved disk arrangement has been investigated by using a three-dimensional Navier-Stokes code with a standard k-ε turbulence model. The purpose is to evaluate and select the optimum impeller modification that would increase the pump suction flow rate range. Three-dimensional numerical Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) tools are used to simulate flow field characteristics inside the centrifugal pump and provide critical hydraulic design information. In the present work, ANSYS v.16.1 Fluent solver is used to analyze the pressure and velocity distributions inside impeller suction and discharge passages. The ultimate goal of this study is to manufacture and validate the most optimized and efficient centrifugal pump impeller with a curved disk. The best case curve identifies the highest increase of total pressure difference by 22.1%, and highest efficiency by 92.3% at low flowrates.

Hydraulic characteristics of orifice plates with multiple triangular holes in hydrodynamic cavitation reactor were experimentally investigated by use of three dimensional particle image velocimetry (PIV), high speed photography, electronic multi-pressure scanivalve and pressure data acquisition system, and numerically simulated by CFD software Flow 3D in this paper. Effects of number, arrangement and ratio of holes on hydraulic characteristics of the orifice plates were considered. Effects of arrangement and ratio of holes and flow velocity ahead of plate on cavitation number and velocity profile were compared. Distribution of turbulent kinetic energy and similarity of velocity profile were analyzed. And characteristics of cavitating flow downstream of the orifice plate were photographically observed by high speed camera. Also, a comparison with flow characteristics of orifice plate with hybrid holes (circle, square and triangle) was made.

Flow induced vibration due to the dynamics of rotor-stator interaction in an axial-flow pump is one of the most damaging vibration sources to the pump components, attached pipelines, and equipment. Three-dimensional unsteady numerical simulations were conducted on the complex turbulent flow field in an axial-flow water pump, in order to investigate the flow induced vibration problem. The shear stress transport (SST) k-ω model was employed in the numerical simulations. The fast Fourier transform technique was adopted to process the obtained fluctuating pressure signals. The characteristics of pressure fluctuations acting on the impeller were then investigated. The spectra of pressure fluctuations were predicted. The dominant frequencies at the locations of impeller inlet, impeller outlet, and impeller blade surface are all 198 Hz (4 times of the rotation frequency 49.5 Hz), which indicates that the dominant frequency is in good agreement with the blade passing frequency (BPF). The first BPF dominates the frequency spectrum for all monitoring locations inside the pump.

In this paper, the three-dimensional unsteady Reynolds-averaged Navier-Stokes equations with an RNG double-equation turbulence model and a discrete phase model were used for the investigation of snow accumulation on the bogie of a high-speed train. Two kinds of deflector plates, one installed at the front end and the other at the rear end of the bogie, were proposed to reduce snow accumulation. The accuracy of the CFD methodology was validated against wind tunnel tests. The results showed that high-speed air will impact the plates where snow particles get accumulated. The snow covering on the bogie rarely drifts back into the bogie region with air. The amount of accumulating snow in the optimum models is reduced by 50.58% on average as compared to those in the original models. At the rear end of the bogie, the inclined deflector plate reduced snow accumulation by up to 10.91% compared to the vertical deflector plate.

Tip leakage flows in unshrouded high speed turbines cause large aerodynamic penalties, induce significant thermal loads and give rise to intense thermal stresses onto the blade tip and casing endwalls. In the pursuit of superior engine reliability and efficiency, the turbine blade tip design is of paramount importance and still poses an exceptional challenge to turbine designers. The ever-increasing rotational speeds and pressure loadings tend to accelerate the tip flow velocities beyond the transonic regime. Overtip supersonic flows are characterized by complex flow patterns, which determine the heat transfer signature. Hence, the physics of the overtip flow structures and the influence of the geometrical parameters on the overtip flow require further understanding to develop innovative tip designs. Conventional blade tip shapes are not adequate for such high speed flows and hence, potential for enhanced performances lays in appropriate tip shaping. The present research aims to quantify the prospective gain offered by a fully contoured blade tip shape against conventional geometries such as a flat and squealer tip. A detailed numerical study was conducted on a modern transonic turbine rotor blade (Reynolds number is 5.5 × 105, relative exit Mach number is 0.9) by means of three-dimensional Reynolds-Averaged Navier-Stokes calculations. The novel contoured tip geometry was designed based on a 2D tip shape optimization in which only the upper 2% of the blade span was modified. This study yields a deeper insight into the application of blade tip carving in high speed turbines and provides guidelines for future tip designs with enhanced aerothermal performances.

AbstractThe article discusses the stress optimisation process of the highly loaded disc of a high-speed radial-axial microturbine. At the design stage, the strength optimisation is vitally important for these types of devices because they must withstand very high temperatures (600∘C in this case) and be capable of operating at high rotational speeds (96,000 rpm in this case). Calculations were made using a three dimensional FE numerical model. The optimisation process is strictly connected with the choice of materials — which in this case are Inconel 738 (nickel-cobalt super alloy) and silicon nitride. Several stress reduction methods were developed, which took into account the mass of the disc, the rotational speed of the rotor and the complex shape of the rear part of the disc. Numerical computations helped to choose the best optimisation method, which decreased maximum reduced von Mises stresses by about 45% (from 1,288 MPa to 705 MPa). The methods proposed in this article are universal and can be implemented in the design process of various high-speed radial-axial microturbines. This article could be of interest to scientists and engineers who deal with highly loaded microturbines, which are increasingly used in many industrial sectors.

Savonius wind turbines have distinct advantages in terms of simplicity, low noise, and ease of manufacturing, yet they are not preferred for large-scale power generation due to their lower aerodynamic performance and high wind loads. This study is aimed at reducing the thrust load with retractable type telescopic blades. This novel telescopic Savonius turbine is tested in an open jet wind tunnel to assess the performance in terms of torque, power, and thrust on the rotor. The dynamic and static characteristics are obtained for both extended and retracted configuration after correcting the experimental data for wind tunnel blockage. A preliminary numerical study is carried out in an effort to determine the variation of the drag coefficient in relation to the bucket thickness. The proposed telescopic turbine demonstrates a reduction in thrust load of 72.4% with a maximum power coefficient of 0.14 at the tip speed ratio of 0.7 compared to an extended operating configuration, similar to a conventional Savonius turbine. Thus, the telescopic Savonius turbine can be scaled up to higher kilowatt capacity with the cost comparable to other high-speed rotors such as Darrieus or horizontal axis wind turbines.

In the field of mechanical engineering, involute helical gears are widely used. Compared with the involute spur gear, helical gears have a high bearing strength, more smooth transmission, less impact and less noise. The internal gear pairs have the features of large transmission ratio, low vibration, low noise and low wear and hence are widely used in planetary gear transmission systems. In order to meet the requirements of high strength, high speed of the modern gear transmission systems, a new type of asymmetric involute internal helical gears is designed based on conventional involute gears. This paper discusses the gear shaper cutter modeling for machining this new gear, analyzes the formation principle of asymmetric tooth profile and establishes a three-dimensional modeling by SolidWorks. Through MATLAB simulation, pressure angle, tooth number, coefficient of displacement and contact ratio of conventional and asymmetric gear are compared and analyzed. Using ANSYS, two types of gears are compared on strength in order to demonstrate superiority of asymmetric tooth and further study about the asymmetric internal helical gears.
