In order to relieve the increasing ground traffic pressure in the process of urbanization in China, it is inevitable to build more metro lines. However, the stratum movement caused by tunneling affects the safety of adjacent underground structures and aboveground buildings. Therefore, how to evaluate and control the stratum movement is a prominent problem. In this paper, based on the engineering project of an interval tunnel between Shizishan Station and Chuanshi Station in Chengdu Metro Line 7, China, the action mechanism of stratum movement induced by shield tunneling is analyzed, and the effect factors are divided into two categories: ground loss factors and mechanical factors. Combining the advantages of Loganathan method and mirror source-sink method, a new solution of three-dimensional displacement induced by ground loss is proposed. Based on the elastic half-space Mindlin model, the displacement at any point induced by four mechanical effect factors is deduced. Finally, the total displacement is verified by field monitoring data and quantitative analyzed in various parts.

Shield tunneling is becoming the preferred construction scheme for metro construction because of its advantages of fast construction speed and small disturbance. However, limited by process defects, the stratum movements induced by the construction of shield tunnels still affects the safety of nearby underground structures and aboveground buildings. Therefore, the reliable prediction of stratum movements is important. Described in this paper is an analysis method of the Greenfield stratum movements (Greenfield is an area of land that has not yet had buildings on it, stratum movements means the movement of various soil layers) caused by shield tunnel construction combining an elastic half-space model of mirror source–sink method with the use of modified analytical method. Based on the theoretical formula in this paper, not only can the curve of surface settlement trough be calculated, but also the three-dimensional displacement field of deep soil can be obtained. By comparing vertical and horizontal contour maps of Greenfield stratum movements, good consistency between theoretical formula results and centrifugal test results are shown. This solves the defects and limitations of existing two-dimensional formulas; furthermore, based on this, it is convenient to evaluate the effect on the other skewed underground structures through the elastic foundation beam and other similar methods; therefore, this paper can provide a wide guidance and service for the design and construction of underground engineering in the future.

In this paper, Ground deformation in shield tunneling construction is researched. It is put forward that ground deformation is caused by three reasons, which are ground loss, the positive thrust and the friction. By solving the three-part respectively, the three-dimensional solution formula can be obtained after superposing these. This method is used to calculate the tunnel construction phase at any point in the level of vertical settlement and horizontal displacement. As shown in analytical calculation, the predicted ground displacements of this method are in good agreement with the measured values.

Three-dimensional wave propagation in an elastic half space is considered. The half space is traction free on half its boundary, while the remaining part of the boundary is free of shear traction and is constrained against normal displacement by a smooth, rigid barrier. A time-harmonic surface wave, traveling on the traction free part of the surface, is obliquely incident on the edge of the barrier. The amplitude and the phase of the resulting reflected surface wave are determined by means of Laplace transform methods and the Wiener-Hopf technique. Wave propagation in an elastic half space in contact with two rigid, smooth barriers is then considered. The barriers are arranged so that a strip on the surface of uniform width is traction free, which forms a wave guide for surface waves. Results of the surface wave reflection problem are then used to geometrically construct dispersion relations for the propagation of unattenuated guided surface waves in the guiding structure. The rate of decay of body wave disturbances, localized near the edges of the guide, is discussed.

This paper describes an efficient transient elastohydrodynamic simulation method for gear contacts. The model uses oil films and elastic deformations directly in the multibody simulation, and is based on the Reynolds equation including squeeze and wedge terms as well as an elastic half-space. Two transient solutions to this problem, an analytical and a numerical one, were developed. The analytical solution is accomplished using assumptions for the gap shape and the pressure in the middle of the gap. The numerical problem is solved using multilevel multi-integration algorithms. With this approach, tooth impacts during gear rattling as well as highly loaded power-transmitting gear contacts can be investigated and lubrication conditions like gap heights or type of friction may be determined. The method was implemented in the multibody simulation environment SIMPACK. Therefore it is easy to transfer the developed element to other models and use it for a multitude of different engineering problems. A detailed three-dimensional elastic multibody model of an experimental transmission is used to validate the developed method. Important values of the gear contact like normal and tangential forces, proportion of dry friction, and minimum gap heights are calculated and studied for different conditions. In addition, pressure distributions on tooth flanks as well as gap forms are determined based on the numerical solution method. Finally, the simulation approach is validated with measurements and shows good consistency. The simulation model is therefore capable of predicting transient gear contact under different operating conditions such as load vibrations or gear rattling. Simulations of complete transmissions are possible and therefore a direct determination of transmission vibration behavior and structure-borne noise as well as of forces and lubrication conditions can be done.

Shield construction will cause surface subsidence, and the presence of underground structures above the tunnel has an impact on surface subsidence. Based on this, with the engineering of undercross shield tunnel construction on railway station as background, used numerical simulation method to analyze the effect of surface subsidence of underground passage, and studied the influence of depth and width of underpasses on ground movement induced. The results show that: The impact of the underground passage to the wire surface subsidence caused by the shield cannot be ignored. Surface subsidence caused by double shield will be decreased because of the existence of the underground passage, and that related to the channel depth and width. The greater the depth of underground channel, the greater the surface subsidence; greater the underground channel width, the smaller surface subsidence. Meanwhile, the surface subsidence trough width and the largest settlement scope unrelated to the depth of underground tunnels but the underground channel width, and increases with the increasing of the underpass width.

ABSTRACT A matrix formulation is used to derive integral expressions for the time transformed displacement fields produced by simple sources at any depth in a multilayered elastic isotropic solid half-space. The integrals are evaluated for their residue contribution to obtain surface wave displacements in the frequency domain. The solutions are then generalized to include the effect of a surface liquid layer. The theory includes the effect of layering and source depth for the following: (1) Rayleigh waves from an explosive source, (2) Rayleigh waves from a vertical point force, (3) Rayleigh and Love waves from a vertical strike slip fault model. The latter source also includes the effect of fault dimensions and rupture velocity. From these results we are able to show certain reciprocity relations for surface waves which had been previously proved for the total displacement field. The theory presented here lays the ground work for later papers in which theoretical seismograms are compared with observations in both the time and frequency domain.

The three-dimensional problem of contact between a spherical indenter and a multi-layered structure bonded to an elastic half-space is investigated. The layers and half-space are assumed to be composed of transversely isotropic materials. By the use of Hankel transforms, the mixed boundary value problem is reduced to an integral equation, which is solved numerically to determine the contact stresses and contact region. The interior displacement and stress fields in both the layer and half-space can be calculated from the inverse Hankel transform used with the solved contact stresses prescribed over the contact region. The stress components, which may be related to the contact failure of coatings, are discussed for various coating thicknesses.

Double-O-tube shield tunneling has attracted increasing attention because it offers cost-efficiency in underground construction. Prediction of ground surface settlement and the variety of additional stresses induced by shield construction is crucial to underground construction in metropolises since excessive settlement could trigger potential damage to the surrounding environment. The additional stresses induced by the propulsion of double-O-tube shields are calculated by means of the Mindlin’s equations of elasticity. The characteristics of additional stresses are analyzed with compound Gauss-Legendre integral arithmetic, and the frontal additional thrust, the lateral friction, and the ground loss are taken into account. Subsequently, based on field measurements, the maximum settlement coefficient and width of the settlement trough coefficient of the typical Peck formula are modified. The predictive curve of the Peck formula is closer to the engineering measured data than that of the typical formula. The cut-off functions of ground surface settlement caused by double-O-tube tunnel shield construction are proposed and can predict the shape of ground surface settlement, such as single peak or double peak. The correctness of the proposed functions is verified based on an engineering project.
