In this study, laser sintering of TiO2 nanoparticle films on plastic substrates was conducted in order to improve the incident photon-to-electron conversion efficiency (IPCE) of flexible dye-sensitized solar cells (DSCs). Lasers with different wavelengths (355 nm and 1064 nm) were used to process the TiO2 electrodes. With an optimized processing parameter combination, the 1064 nm laser can sinter 13 μm thick TiO2 films uniformly, but the uniform sintering cannot be achieved by the 355nm ultraviolet (UV) laser, since the films possess a high absorption ratio at 355 nm. The experimental results demonstrate that the near-infrared laser sintering can enhance the electrical connection between TiO2 nanoparticles without destroying the flexible plastic substrate, reduce the transmission impedance of electrons and increase the absorption rate of incident light. Furthermore, the charge collection efficiency, fill factor, and short-circuit current have all been improved to some extent, and the solar conversion efficiency increased from 4.6% to 5.7%, with an efficiency enhancement reaching 23.9%.

Trace amount Ca-doped TiO2films were synthesized by the hydrothermal method and applied as photoanodes of dye-sensitized solar cells (DSSCs). To prepare Ca-doped TiO2film electrodes, several milliliters of Ca(NO3)2solution was added in TiO2solution during the hydrolysis process. The improvements of DSSCs were confirmed by photocurrent density-voltage (J-V) characteristics, electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS) measurements. Owing to the doping effect of Ca, the Ca-doped TiO2thin film shows power conversion efficiency of 7.45% for 50 ppm Ca-doped TiO2electrode, which is higher than that of the undoped TiO2film (6.78%) and the short-circuit photocurrent density(Jsc)increases from 13.68 to 15.42 mA·cm−2. The energy conversion efficiency and short-circuit current density(Jsc)of DSSCs were increased due to the faster electron transport in the Ca-doped TiO2film. When Ca was incorporated into TiO2films, the electrons transport faster and the charge collection efficiencyηccis higher than that in the undoped TiO2films.

TiO2 films with three-dimensional web-like structure have been prepared by the photo polymerization-induced phase separation method (PIPS). Scanning electron microscopy and X-ray diffraction were used to characterize the as-prepared TiO2 films. The results showed that the film texture could be tuned by changing the composition of the precursor solution. The TiO2 film with web-like structure exhibited high photocatalytic activity for the degradation of methylene blue (MB) dye. The as-prepared films were used as the photo-anodes in dye-sensitized solar cells (DSCs). The photoelectric conversion efficiency of the DSCs was significantly enhanced by changing the POGTA/TTB in the precursor solution. Because of the increased dye adsorption active sites and efficient electron transport in the TiO2 anode film, a photoelectric conversion efficiency of 3.015% was obtained.

Pt counter electrodes (CE) were been prepared using ion sputtering method on indium-doped tinoxide coated polyethylene terephthalate (ITO-PET) for flexible dye-sensitized solar cells (DSSCs). The effect of sputtering time on the properties was characterized by Feld emission scanning electron microscope (FESEM), electrochemical impedance (EIS) and UV-vis absorption spectra. The flexible CE show increased catalytic activity but reduced transmittance when the sputtering time is increased from 0 to 80 s. The light-to-electricity conversion efficiency of the DSSCs assembled with the high catalytic activity flexible CE attained a conversion efficiency of 4.0% by using Ti foil as the photoanode substrate under the simulated AM 1.5 sunlight. The results reveal that ion sputtering is an effective method for depositing platinum nanoparticles on plastic substrates with low cost under room-temperature.
