Plastic and rubber based composites containing carbon black (CB) were investigated for the potential to release CB nano-particulates under stress conditions into food simulants. Nanocomposites were exposed to thermal, chemical, and mechanical stress, followed by mechanical abrasion of their surface. Particle sensitive asymmetric flow field-flow fractionation (AF4) with multi angle laser light scattering (MALLS) detection was used to detect and quantify CB nano-particulates. This study demonstrates that, even under dynamic stress conditions, CB nano-particulates are not released from the plastic or rubber compounds into food. This study intends also to propose a general nano-release stress test protocol for plastic materials coming into contact with foodstuff.

Nanocomposites were exposed to thermal, chemical, and mechanical stress followed by mechanical abrasion of their surface. Particle sensitive asymmetric flow field-flow fractionation (AF4) with multi-angle laser light scattering (MALLS) as well as inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry (ICP-MS) detection was used to detect and quantify the respective nanoparticulates. The results of this study demonstrate that even under dynamic stress conditions nanoparticulates are not released from the nanocomposites into food.

Filled the N330 carbon black, silica T80 carbon black and Al powder and Fe2O3 magnetic nanoparticles, the rubber composites on multi-component electromagnetic fillers were prepared according to orthogonal experiment analysis, and the preliminary experiment conclusions of the filler prescription designs were given; Based on the experiment design, the mechanical properties and thermal conductivity of the rubber composite were tested, and the testing results were analyzed by using variance analysis. Thus, the paper shows that the effects of N330 on rubber mechanical properties are significant, and the effects of Al powder on the rubber thermal conductivity are significant. Moreover, it is highly emphasized in this paper that the orthogonal experiment design must be carefully explored before the tests are executed.

Railway vehicle structure fatigue life consumption monitoring can be used to determine fatigue damage by directly or indirectly monitoring the loads placed on critical vehicle components susceptible to failure from fatigue damage. The sample locomotive carbody structure was used for this study. Firstly, the hybrid fatigue analysis method was used with Multi-Body System (MBS) simulation and Finite Element Method (FEM) for evaluating the carbody structure dynamic stress histories. Secondly, the standard fatigue time domain method was used in fatigue analysis software FE-FATIGUE and MATLAB WAFO (Wave Analysis for Fatigue and Oceanography) tools. And carbody structure fatigue life and fatigue damage were predicted. Finally, and carbody structure dynamic stress experimental data was taken from this locomotive running between Kunming-Weishe for this analysis. The data was used to validate the simulation results based on hybrid method. The analysis results show that the hybrid method prediction error is approximately 30.7%. It also illustrates that the fatigue life and durability of the locomotive can be predicted with this hybrid method. The results of this study can be modified to be representative of the railway vehicle dynamic stress test.

Abstract The dependence of the Index of Elasticity, E, the reciprocal value of sound velocity, on temperature and pressure is related to specific volume and compressibility of rubbers. The sensitivity of E towards changes of temperature and pressure was calculated, indicating a new versatile possibility for the control of rubber extruders. To confirm this, extruder experiments were carried out with an SHR compound, of which a working diagram was established showing the complete behavior of E=f(p,T). The effect of compound composition, especially of plasticizer and carbon black content, was examined. Viscosity in the extruder primarily determines changes in E. The method was shown to be applicable up to a die diameter of at least 200 mm. The method may also be applied to follow degradation of rubber compounds during mastication.

Abstract Carbon blacks can be grouped into different classes according to the way in which their fineness of division relates to different properties in rubber. Within any one class the principal properties vary in a regular manner with particle size. The normal class consists of the furnace carbons, Kosmos (Dixie)-40, Statex, the rubber-grade impingement carbons, and possibly, the color-grade impingement carbons. The subnormal classes consist of thermal carbons and acetylene and lamp blacks. Irrespective of the above classification, the properties which depend more on fineness of division than on other factors are rebound resilience, abrasion resistance, tensile strength and tear resistance. The lower limit of particle diameter for best tensile strength and tear resistance appears to be higher than that for abrasion resistance. B.S.I, hardness and electrical conductivity are properties which depend at least as much on other factors as on particle size. Stiffness (modulus) depends more on other factors than on particle size. Factors modifying the effects of particle size (or specific surface) include the presence of carbon-carbon structures and a reduction in strength of bond in rubber-carbon structures. Carbon black is thought to exist in rubber in four states: agglomerated, flocculated, dispersed, and bonded to the rubber molecules (the reënforcing fraction). Abrasion resistance is regarded as providing the only reliable measure of reënforcement.
