Seaweeds are becoming a viable source of biologically active composites with a hopeful application as nutraceuticals, functional food components, and medicinal agents. In the present study, the antioxidant capacity and biochemical compositions of four seaweeds; Polycladia indica and Turbinaria ornata (Phaeophyceae) and Laurencia obtusa and Sarconema scinaioides (Rhodophyceae), were estimated. The results indicated that T. ornata showed the maximum value of total phenolic compound (TPC), flavonoid content, β-carotene, carbohydrate and has maximum percentage of DPPH radical scavenging capacity, total antioxidant capacity (TAC), and total reducing capacity (TRC) (72.48%, 15.02%, and 53.24% inhibition, respectively), while the highest contents of ascorbic acid, lipid, calcium, and zinc were observed in L. obtusa. P. indica showed the highest protein contents, dietary fibers, sodium, potassium, magnesium, and total amino acids. Glutamic, aspartic, proline, and methionine were the most frequent amino acids in the four selected seaweeds. Brown seaweeds (T. ornata and P. indica) attained the highest percent of the total polyunsaturated (ω6 and ω3) essential fatty acids. The biochemical content of these seaweed species, as well as their antioxidant properties, make them interesting candidates for nutritional, pharmacological, and therapeutic applications.

Aegle marmelos fruit is packed with immense medicinal properties. The main objective of the studywas to assess and compare the phytochemical potency, antioxidant capacity and anti-inflammatory activity of unripe, ripe and overripe fruits. The fruit pulp was dried and extract (ripe fruit) was prepared in various solvents. Phytochemical assessment was done and the solvent which exhibited maximum potency was chosen as unripe and ripe fruit solvents. Phytochemical assessment, estimation of phenols (FolinCiocalteau method), antioxidant capacity (Molybdate method), anti-inflammatory activity (membrane stabilization property method) and Free radical scavenging capacity for hydroxyl, hydrogen peroxide and DPPH free radicals were carried out. The phytochemical screening of the ripe fruit showed maximum intensity in hydroethanolic extract. On comparison, ripe fruit extract possessed a greater phytochemical potency, antioxidant capacity and inhibition against hydroxyl, hydrogen peroxide, DPPH radicals. The total phenolic content of the over ripe fruit was high. The anti-inflammatory activity of unripe fruit was slightly higher than ripe fruit. This signifies that phytochemical potency and functional properties of the fruit differs with maturity stages.

In this study, the effects of different fruit parts and extraction conditions on the antioxidant properties of jujube (Ziziphus jujuba Mill.) fruit were investigated. Five in vitro antioxidant models and statistical analyses were performed. The results revealed that jujube peel with pulp (peel pulp) exhibited better antioxidant capacity than did seeds. Overall, jujube peel pulp extracted using 50% ethanol at 60 °C exhibited the best antioxidant capacity in terms of 2,2-diphenyl-1-picrylhydrazyl radical scavenging activity (0.3 ± 0 mg/mL), 2,2-azino-bis-(3-ethylbenzothiazoline-6-sulfonic acid) radical scavenging activity (0.5 ± 0 mg/mL), total phenolic content (38.3 ± 0.4 mg gallic acid equivalent per gram dry weight), total flavonoid content (43.8 ± 0.2 mg quercetin equivalent per gram dry weight), and reducing power (41.9 ± 2.2 mg ascorbic acid equivalent per gram dry weight). The results indicated that jujube peel pulp is a more potential natural antioxidant than seeds.

<p><em>Curculigo orchioides</em> Gaertn. is used in traditional medicine in Vietnam. The antioxidant potential of <em>Curculigo orchioides</em> was<em> </em>evaluated through DPPH radical scavenging and total antioxidant capacity method. The data resulted from DPPH radical<em> </em>scavenging activities indicated that <em>Curculigo orchioides</em> displayed the good activities with low IC<sub>50 </sub>value (22.78μg/mL), approximately 1.5 times less than that of curcumin (34.34 μg/mL). The total antioxidant capacity of the extract of <em>Curculigo orchioides</em> contained 132.48 ± 1.48  mg GA/g or  264.45 ± 2.34 μmol AS/g. Content of compounds from Curculigo orchioides including the total phenolic, total flavonoid, polysaccharides, and saponin - triterpenoids were examined using the colorimetric method with reagents. The content of phenolic compounds, flavonoid compounds, polysaccharides, and saponin – triterpenoids found in <em>Curculigo orchioides</em> was  196.24 ± 1.45 mg GAE/g, 78.49 ± 1.78  mg QUE/g, 4.34 ± 0.08 %, 47.60 ± 0.24 mg Rb1/g (Rb1: (Gypenoside III)), respectively. Specifically, the total saponin - triterpenoid content of <em>Curculigo orchioides</em> has been reported for the first time.</p>

Secondary bioactive compounds of endophytes are inevitable biomolecules of therapeutical importance. In the present study, secondary metabolites profiling of an endophytic bacterial strain, Acinetobacter baumannii, were explored using GC-MS study. Presence of antioxidant substances and antioxidant properties in chloroform (CHL), diethyl ether (DEE), and ethyl acetate (EA) crude extracts of the endophytic bacteria were studied. Total phenolic content (TPC), total flavonoid content (TFC), total antioxidant capacity (TAC), 2,2-diphenyl-1-picrylhydrazyl (DPPH) radical scavenging activity, and ferrous ion chelating assay were evaluated. A total of 74 compounds were identified from the GC-MS analysis of the EA extract representing mostly alkane compounds followed by phenols, carboxylic acids, aromatic heterocyclic compounds, ketones, aromatic esters, aromatic benzenes, and alkenes. Among the two phenolic compounds, namely, phenol, 2,4-bis(1,1-dimethylethyl)- and phenol, 3,5-bis(1,1-dimethylethyl)-, the former was found in abundance (11.56%) while the latter was found in smaller quantity (0.14%). Moreover, the endophytic bacteria was found to possess a number of metal ions including Fe(II) and Cu(II) as 1307.13 ± 2.35 ppb and 42.38 ± 0.352 ppb, respectively. The extracts exhibited concentration dependent antioxidant and prooxidant properties at high and low concentrations, respectively. The presence of phenolic compounds and metal ions was believed to play an important role in the antioxidant and prooxidant potentials of the extracts. Further studies are suggested for exploring the untapped resource of endophytic bacteria for the development of novel therapeutic agents.

The antioxidant properties of cool-climate Regent wines from Podkarpacie region, Poland were investigated. Total polyphenols, total flavonoids, total monomeric anthocyanins, trans-resveratrol concentration, radical scavenging ability using 1,1-diphenyl-2-picryl-hydrazyl (DPPH) and total antioxidant capacity with TEAC and FRAP methods were measured. The average contents of the compounds determined for Regent wines were comparable to the respective data available in literature found for warm-climate wines. Correspondence Analysis of the data revealed the relation of total polyphenols content and antioxidant capacity and radical scavenging ability of studied wines, and in lesser extent correlation with total flavonoids content. The total monomeric anthocyanins content and resveratrol concentration were poorly related to the total polyphenols content and antioxidant capacity.

Curculigo orchioides Gaertn. is used in traditional medicine in Vietnam. Its antioxidant potential was evaluated through DPPH radical scavenging and the total antioxidant capacity method. The data resulted from DPPH radical scavenging activity indicate that Curculigo orchioides display high activity with a low IC50 value (22.78μg/mL), approximately 1.5 times less than that of curcumin (34.34 μg/mL). The total antioxidant capacity of the extract is equivalent to 132.48 ± 1.48 mg GA/g or 264.45 ± 2.34 μmol AS/g. The composition of Curculigo orchioides, including the total phenolic, total flavonoid, polysaccharides, and triterpenoid saponins, was examined by using the colorimetric method with reagents, and their quantity is equivalent to 196.24 ± 1.45 mg GAE/g, 78.49 ± 1.78 mg QE/g, 4.34 ± 0.08 %, 47.60 ± 0.24 mg Rb1/g (Rb1: Gypenoside III), respectively. Specifically, the total triterpenoid saponins content of Curculigo orchioides has been reported for the first time.

Sago Baruk (Arenga microcarpha) is one of endemic crop type of Archipelago of Sangihe Talaud, North Sulawesi and potential as source bioactivities including antioxidant. The objectives of this research were to determine the chemical characteristics and antioxidant activity of starch sago baruk which was sequentially extracted with water and filtrate. The sago trunks pith was sequentially extracted with water and filtrate at room temparature for 1 hour. After that, starch of sago baruk were analyzed for their chemical composition (moisture, fat, protein, ash crude fiber and charbohydrate) and total phenolic and tannin condensed content. Antioxidant activity of each sago flour were evaluated in 1,1-diphenyl-2-picrylhydrazyl (DPPH) radical scavenging and total antioxidant capacity. After that, the starch was characterized by IR spectroscopic technique. The sequential extraction result indicated percentage yield of starch I and starch II were 41.39% and 38.21%. The chemical characteristics of starch I revealed that percentage protein, ash, crude fibre and fat were below 1% than starch II especially protein and fiber crude. The starch I had highest total phenolic and tannin condensed content than starch II and starch K. The starch I also showed the highest free radical scavenging activity in 1,1-diphenyl-2-picrylhydrazyl (DPPH) radical than starch II and starch K. The result also showed that starch I has strongest total antioxidant capacity than starch II and starch K at all concentration level. Antioxidant activity of three starch increased with the increase in concentration of the samples. The three starch showed of hidroxy (OH), carbonyl (C=O), ether (C-O) and aliphatic group (C-C). It is concluded that starch sago baruk especially the starch I are very rich in antioxidant substituens.

In recent years, it has attracted great attention to determine and appraise synthetic antioxidants with high free radical scavenging capacity associated with various disorders. Because synthetic antioxidants are widely used in place of native antioxidants as they are influential and less expensive. In this study, the antioxidant activity of the newly synthesized asymmetric diimine Schiff base was determined by using DPPH (2,2-diphenyl-1-picrylhydrazyl) radical scavenging, ferrous ion chelation (FIC) activity and total antioxidant activity (Phosphomolybdenum assay) methods. The effective concentration (IC50) values were calculated for the Schiff base and standards. According to the results of DPPH radical scavenging, ferrous ion chelation and total antioxidant methods, Schiff base showed a well antioxidant activity. It was determined that Schiff base is reactive towards DPPH radicals (IC50, 180.0 μM) and especially Fe+2 ions (IC50, 76.3 μM). It was also found that it actively reduces the Mo(VI) ion to the Mo(V) form (IC50, 121.5 μM). The our results indicate Schiff base, may be a fine candidate as a source of synthetic antioxidants and possibly strong drug.

<p>As a common beverage, green tea is supposed to have beneficial health effect, such as antioxidant. At present, there are many green teas available in the market in Jakarta. Their quality, in their antioxidant activity, should be proved. This study aimed to investigate the antioxidant activity of extracts of green tea products commercially available in Jakarta. Four green tea samples from different factories (coded as A, B, C, and D) were selected and macerated using methanol. DPPH radical scavenging activity, reducing power ability and total antioxidant capacity were used to measure the antioxidant activity. The total phenolic content (TPC) was also determined. The studied green teas had varied TPC from 23.80  to  84.03 mG GAE/g extract, ranked as B &gt; D &gt; A &gt; C. All samples exhibited various but strong antioxidant activity by DPPH assay, even better than standards ascorbic acid and butylated hydroxytoluene (BHT). However, all extracts showed similar activities in their reducing power ability and total antioxidant capacity, with activities less than standards.<strong> </strong>These findings confirm that the quality of the Indonesian commercial green teas were heterogeneous both in TPC or DPPH scavenging capacity. But, there is an indication that they are good as an antioxidant containing beverage. </p>

Background: Tuckeroo (Cupaniopsis anacardioides) is one of eleven species that belongs to the Sapindaceae family, which is native to Australia. Objective: This study aimed to investigate the phytochemicals, antioxidant capacity, and cytotoxic activity in vitro of Tuckeroo extracts prepared from fresh or dried whole fruits, or just their skin, using acetone (50%) or methanol (50%). Methods: Spectrophotometric analysis was conducted to determine total phenolic content and antioxidant properties, and HPLC analysis was applied to further identified major compounds within the extracts. Cytotoxic activities of the extracts were also tested on ten cancer cell lines including HT29 (colon); U87, SJ-G2 (glioblastoma); MCF-7 (Breast); A2780 (ovarian); H460 (lung); A431 (skin); Du145 (prostate); BE2-C (neuroblastoma); MIA PaCa-2 (pancreas); and one non-tumour derived normal breast cell line (MCF10A). Results: The results showed that the type of samples or solvents used significantly affected the levels of phenolic compounds, antioxidant capacity and cytotoxicity of the extracts. The extract prepared from the fresh skin of the Tuckeroo fruits had the highest level of phenolics, individual major bioactive compounds, antioxidant and cytotoxic properties. Conclusions: Fresh Tuckeroo fruit skin is a rich source of phytochemicals, which are potentially potent biologically active agents for application in the health industries. More studies are recommended to further isolate, identify and assess the anti-cancer potential from extract prepared from Tuckeroo fruit skin.
