The radio-over-fiber (RoF) technique has gained a lot of interest recently, as the millimeter-wave signals can be generated and delivered in the optical domain with the advantages of low attenuation, high capacity, and being free from electromagnetic noise interference (EMI). In this paper, we propose and experimentally prove a self-start multi-wavelength laser source based on a distributed feedback laser diode (DFB-LD) for the RoF transport system. The self-start multi-wavelength laser source generates stable laser power with less than 0.18 dB power fluctuation and exhibits good stability. In order to estimate the transmission performance, data is externally modulated onto the multi-wavelength by a reflective semiconductor optical amplifier (RSOA) and transmitted through single-mode fiber (SMF). The experimental result proves that the proposed RoF transport system achieves error-free transmission and clear eye diagrams.

Abstract Angle sensors based on the laser autocollimation are often employed to evaluate surface profiles of a target of interest. The authors have developed a femtosecond laser angle sensor, in which a spectrometer or an optical spectrum analyzer with a single-mode fiber is employed as the photodetector for simultaneous capturing of the multiple optical modes. In this paper, the concept of the femtosecond laser angle sensor is applied to evaluate the surface profile of a target of interest. An optical setup is designed in such a way that each mode in the spectrum of the mode-locked femtosecond is utilized as the laser beam to measure the local slope of a measurement target at each different point to evaluate the surface profile. Some basic experiments are carried out by using the developed optical setup with a mode-locked femtosecond laser source to evaluate basic performances of the developed optical setup as an optical angle sensor.

Abstract A method for obtaining picosecond pulse sources with continuously tunable central wavelengths is demonstrated numerically and experimentally. A dissipative soliton (DS) mode-locked erbium-doped fiber (EDF) laser based on the nonlinear polarization rotation provides the seed pulse with a flat-top spectral profile and a 55 nm spectral bandwidth. Then it is filtered by a wavelength-tunable super-Gaussian bandpass filter and amplified by two segments of EDFs with different doping concentrations. The output DS pulse from the EDF laser can be compressed from 5.532 ps to 0.291 ps by using a single-mode fiber (SMF-28e), while the pulse energy is about 1.6 nJ. Furthermore, the about 4 ps and 6.84 nJ pulses with continuously tunable central wavelengths ranging from 1535 to 1580 nm can be obtained by amplifying the spectrally filtered pulses. The tunable picosecond pulse source based on the extra-cavity filtering method is very useful for many practical applications because of its flexible wavelength control.

As an important parameter in the laser communication system, the narrow linewidth of tunable laser source (TLS) must be measured accurately. Therefore, the linewidth of a TLS was measured with the delayed self-heterodyne detection method in the present work. The total-reflected delay line was used in the measurement system for make full use of 25km single-mode fiber delay line. The measured linewidth of the 1550 TLS is of 127 kHz, in agreement with the nominal value.

We discuss the advantages of wavelength-division-multiplexed (WDM) lightwave systems and the need for monolithically integrated multiwavelength laser arrays. For WDM light-wave systems to be cost effective, it is important to reduce the per-wavelength component cost. By photonic integration, the packaging and the control circuitry will be shared among all the wavelengths. In this paper, we review the multiwavelength laser arrays, the array coupling, and the photonic integration approach. We have demonstrated the monolithic integration of a 21-wavelength multi-quantum-well distributed-feedback laser array with a star coupler and optical amplifiers on the same chip. Operating a packaged module under CW operation, we obtained as many as 15 individual wavelengths simultaneously launched from one output port of the star coupler of this integrated chip into one lensed single-mode fiber. We also characterized the thermal and the electrical crosstalk from the neighboring lasers. This integrated chip stands a good chance of being a compact and low-cost multiwavelength laser source for future WDM lightwave systems.

This paper experimentally demonstrated a ring cavity multi-wavelength Brillouin fiber laser employing fiber Bragg grating (FBG) that operated in the C-band region. The FBG plays a significant role to reflect signals and filter selected wavelengths. A number of generated Brillouin Stokes (BS) signals and tuning range ability were investigated. A 9[Formula: see text]km length of single mode fiber was utilized to provide a Brillouin gain medium for generating stimulated Brillouin scattering effect. In this work, at optimum output coupling ratio of 90% and Brillouin pump (BP) wavelength of 1550[Formula: see text]nm, up to a maximum of 26 BS signals were recorded by injecting 63.1[Formula: see text]mW of amplified BP powers. The BS signals were also tunable within the ranges of 1544–1556[Formula: see text]nm in accordance with the FBG properties at 3[Formula: see text]dBm bandwidth of 5[Formula: see text]nm.
