The COVID-19 pandemic has become both a challenge and an opportunity to implement certain changes in the world of education. One of the most important differences has been online evaluation, which had, until now, been marginal in most prestigious universities. This study compared the academic achievement of the last cohort that performed classroom assessment and the first group that was graded for an official degree using synchronous online evaluation. Other variables measured were the self-assessment of students in this second group, in order to understand how it affected their perception of the process using three different indicators: stress, difficulty, and fairness. Nine hundred and nineteen students participated in the study. The results indicate that online assessment resulted in grades that were 10% higher while enjoying the same degree of validity and reliability. In addition, stress and difficulty levels were also in line with the on-site experience, as was the perception that the results were fair. The results allow us to conclude that online evaluation, when proctored, provides the same guarantees as desktop exams, with the added bonus of certain advantages which strongly support their continued use, especially in degrees with many students who may come from many different locations.

This chapter provides an introduction to formative assessment, especially applied within an online or e-learning environment. The characteristics of four strategies of online formative assessment currently most widely used—online adaptive assessment, online self-assessment, online collaborative assessment, and portfolio—are described. References are made throughout recent research about the effectiveness of online formative assessment for optimizing students’ learning. A case study in which a computer-assisted assessment tool was used to design and apply self-assessment exercises is presented. The chapter emphasizes the idea that all type of assessment needs to be conceptualized as “assessment for learning.” Practical advices are detailed for the planning, development, implementation, and review of quality formative online assessment.

In this work, research aimed to determine the influence of the design and implementation of an online evaluation system for student learning at a university in Lima. An online evaluation system with web technology was designed and implemented that is comprised of supervised and exercise qualification exams, where students answer questions with the optional use of aids that allowed them to improve their results. It was worked with a population of 30 students of the Programming Language I subject to the Systems Engineering degree. The type of research was applied, and the design was quasi-experimental, and an entry test (pre-test) and exit test (post-test) were also applied. Likewise, instruments such as questionnaires, evaluation form, and validity and reliability tests were used in each case that allowed to know the information of the respective work. The results of the hypotheses indicate that there are significant differences in general learning, learning of conceptual, procedural and attitudinal content after applying the Online Evaluation System in the results of the input and output evaluation (p<0.05) the average of the Post Test being higher (p = 0.000); therefore, it is concluded that the system improves the evaluation of declarative, procedural and attitudinal learning.

This chapter begins by quoting Professor Wilcox noting that little had changed in schooling over the past 500 years. This chapter provides examples of how the world has changed due to globalisation and e-learning becoming mainstream, the changing needs and aspirations of the current generation of learners and the rapid development of new technologies to assist learning. All of the examples quoted suggest that traditional face-to-face schooling will change. The economic and social survival of nations depends on the quality of education of its people so some form of compulsory schooling will be needed, be it virtual or not.

The implementation of hybrid e-learning in English as A Foreign Language course could perhaps be a promising approach for teaching and learning particularly within Islamic higher education. Hence, this paper attempts to explore the initiative effort of familiarizing hybrid e-learning among Islamic college students in a speaking course. This study took the duration of five months to complete. Instructions were delivered via both face-to-face and online learning: seven times for face-to-face classroom meetings and five times for online classes. Nicenet was used as a virtual classroom. Online rubric was made available for students’ self-assessment both in their mid-term test and final test. Eighty-five pre-service teachers took part in the study. They were asked to do online task instructions either independently or collaboratively with their course mates. Questionnaire and t-test were used to analyze the data. The study indicated that hybrid e-learning is applicable in the college. It promoted motivation and collaborative work for the students. In terms of test results, there was no significant difference in hybrid e-learning approach. The research suggests that the instructions and materials need to be adjusted in order to meet the learners’ need.
