Model based definition (MBD) is the core of product digital research and development. The extension of the scope and content of the product model is an important way to improve the application ability of MBD methodology. In view of the demand of the development of the product definition method and the lack of systematic theoretical methods to support the further improvement of product model quality and ability, this paper proposes the concept of a 3D interpreted model as a new product definition model by integrating and fusing design knowledge on the basis of the MBD model. Firstly, the concept, characteristics and representation method of the 3D interpreted model are elaborated. Then, the construction method of the 3D interpreted model is proposed, which includes two steps. The first step is design knowledge annotation, which is used to integrate design knowledge with the MBD model and form the 3D interpreted model in a CAD environment. The second step is information extraction and knowledge fusion, which is used to construct a 3D interpreted model network by processing the product information and design knowledge stored in a STEP file and knowledge index file, respectively. Finally, a prototype system is developed, and the construction process of a 3D interpreted model is demonstrated and verified through an example. The results show that as a new product definition model, a 3D interpreted model realizes the comprehensive integration of a MBD model and design knowledge, so as to realize the inheritance and development of the product definition method, and supports business activities and saves more social resources.

A new product modeling method for product multidisciplinary collaborative design (MCD) is put forward. The method uses a flexible product model which can be extended transversely and lengthwise by multiple levels’ inheritance and new attribute classes’ addition and a class inheritance mechanism under network environment which allows each discipline to build own view model of a product. An open and flexible system architecture supporting the product MCD effectively is put forward, and prototype system implementation is introduced.

AbstractWhilst prior works have characterised the affordances of prototyping methods in terms of generating knowledge about a product or process, the types, or ‘dimensions’ of knowledge towards which they contribute are not fully understood. In this paper we adapt the concept of ‘design domains’ as a method to interpret, and better understand the contributions of different prototyping methods to design knowledge in new product development. We first synthesise a set of ten dimensions for design knowledge from a review of literature in design-related fields. A study was then conducted in which participants from engineering backgrounds completed a Likert-type questionnaire to quantify the perceived contributions to design knowledge of 90 common prototyping methods against each dimension. We statistically analyse results to identify patterns in the knowledge contribution of different methods. Results reveal that methods exhibit significantly different contribution profiles, suggesting different methods to be suited to different knowledge. Thus, this paper indicates potential for new methods, methodology and processes to leverage such characterisations for better selection and sequencing of methods in the prototyping process.

Existing knowledge provides important reference for designers in mechanical design activities. However, current knowledge acquisition methods based on information retrieval have the problem of inefficiency and low precision, which mainly meet the requirement for knowledge coverage. To improve the efficiency of knowledge acquisition and ensure the availability of design knowledge, this paper proposes a knowledge push service method based on design intent and user interest. First, the design intent model, which is mainly the formal expression of the target function of conceptual design, is built. Second, the user interest model that consists of domain themes and operation logs is built, and an automatic updating method of user interest is proposed. Third, a matching method of design knowledge based on design intent, and a sorting algorithm of knowledge candidates based on user interest are proposed to realize personalized knowledge active push service. Finally, a prototype system called Personalized Knowledge Push System for Mechanical Conceptual Design (MCD-PKPS) is implemented. An illustrative case demonstrates that the proposed method can successfully improve the efficiency and availability of knowledge acquisition.

Abstract We developed a new database tool to manage information during the product definition process. This tool is a result of an ongoing research program to coordinate marketing and design engineering efforts in new product developments, and consider the related life cycle issues early in the design process. The database tool facilitates a methodology that integrates customer and design information, and allows reuse of this information during redesign problems. This paper presents the development, implementation, and an example use of the database tool.

In this paper, we investigated the definition of product design knowledge, design knowledge origin characteristics and design knowledge formalized representation method, etc. We also established the methods to classify and represent the concept-design knowledge and developed an ontology-based model presenting the design knowledge as well as a model for modeling cycles. From the design knowledge management’s angle, design knowledge modeling approach is studied to support the design knowledge development, transfer and reuse for the construction machinery the knowledge modeling.
