In the frame of the circular economy, welding of Ni-based superalloys has gained increasing importance when applied, for instance, to repairing highly expensive components widely used in strategical sectors, such as the defense and aerospace industries. However, correct process parameters avoiding metallurgical defects and premature failures need to be known. To reach this goal, Inconel 625 butt-welded joints were produced by CO2 laser beam welding and different combinations of process parameters. The experimental investigation was carried out with three parameters in two levels with an L4 orthogonal array. Laser power, welding speed, and shielding gas flow rate were varied, and the results were reported in terms of mechanical properties, such as microhardness, tensile strength, distortion, residual stress, and weld bead geometry, and metallurgy. At a lower welding speed of 1 m/min, the full penetration was observed for 3.0 kW and 3.3 kW laser powers. However, sound welds (porosity-free) were produced with a laser power of 3.3 kW. Overall, the obtained full-penetration specimens showed a tensile strength comparable with that of the parent material with residual stresses and distortions increasing with the increase in heat input.

ABSTRACT The application of the low-power CO2 laser-cutting process to fluoroelastomer (FKM), polyamide 6 (PA6), PA6/FKM thermoplastic elastomers (TPEs), and their thermoplastic vulcanizate (TPV) is reported. The main laser process parameters studied were laser power, cutting speed, and material thickness. The value of the top and bottom widths of the slit that were formed during laser cutting (kerf width), melted transverse area, and melted volume per unit time were measured and analyzed. Interestingly, TPE showed a smaller melted area and melted volume per unit time when compared with those values with PA6. Dynamic vulcanization further decreased these values. For example, the melted areas of PA6 and TPE were 510 × 10−3 mm2 and 305 × 10−3 mm2, respectively, which reduced to 238 × 10−3 mm2 for TPV at 40 W laser power. FKM showed the lowest value (melted area of 180 × 10−3 mm2). In addition, the output quality of the cut surface was examined by measuring the root mean square (RMS) roughness of the cut edges and heat-affected zone (HAZ). The obtained results indicated that the dimension of the HAZ and RMS roughness largely decreased in TPE when compared with PA6. For example, the HAZ of PA6 was 700 μm, which decreased to 230 μm for TPE at 40 W laser power. On the other hand, HAZ was nonexistent for FKM. Infrared spectroscopic analysis showed that there was no structural change of TPE or pristine polymers after applying the low-power CO2 laser on the surface of materials. CO2 laser cutting will be a new technique in this industry, and this analysis will assist the manufacturing industry to choose a suitable laser system with exhaustive information of process parameters for cutting or machining of rubber, TPEs, and TPVs.

In this work, pipe billets with a diameter of 73 mm and a wall thickness of 9 mm from steels 32G2 and 40KhN are friction welded with an aim to optimize the process parameters. The friction pressure, the forging pressure and the length of the fusion varied. After the implementation of various welding modes, tensile tests and metallographic studies were carried out. The optimal welding parameters have been established, which make it possible to obtain tensile strength at the level of the 32G2 base metal. The study results of the microstructure and SEM fractographs after the optimal welding mode are presented.

The ultimate strength is an important property of any material for the manufacturing of components. This paper utilized the laser beam welding (LBW), due to its smaller dimension, which produces lesser distortion and process velocity is higher. Inconel 625 alloy and duplex 2205 stainless steel is having higher strength and corrosive resistance properties. Due to the above-mentioned properties, it could be used in oil and gas storage containers, marine and geothermal applications. This research work presents an investigation of various input variable effects on the output variable (ultimate tensile strength) in LBW for dissimilar materials namely, Inconel 625 alloy and duplex 2205 stainless steel. The input variables for this research are the power of a laser, welding speed, and focal position. The experimental runs are developed with the help of design of experiment (DOE) and utilized statistical design expert software. The ultimate tensile strength on different runs is measured using a universal tensile testing machine. Then from a response surface methodology and ANOVA, the optimum value of ultimate tensile strength was determined to maximize the weld joint and bead geometry. Finally, the confirmation test was carried out, it reveals the maximum error of 0.912% with the predicted value. In addition, the microstructure of the weld beads was examined using optical microscopy.

This chapter presents the effect of various process parameters, namely laser power, pulse frequency, and welding speed, on the weld shear strength and weld width using a diode laser system. Here, laser transmission welding of transparent polycarbonate and black carbon filled acrylic each of 2.8 mm thickness have been performed to create lap joint by using low power laser. Response surface methodology is applied to develop the mathematical model between the laser welding process parameters and the responses of weld joint. The developed mathematical model is tested for its adequacy using analysis of variance and other adequacy measures. It has been observed that laser power and welding speed are the dominant factor followed by frequency. A confirmation test has also been conducted to validate the experimental results at optimum parameter setting. Results show that weld strength of 34.3173 N/mm and weld width of 2.61547 mm have been achieved at optimum parameter setting using desirability function-based optimization technique.

Laser welding of plastic materials has a wide range of applications in the packaging, medical, electronics and automobile industries provided it can predict high quality welds compared with other joining methods. Laser welding process parameters can affect the quality of welds. In this paper, Artificial Neural Network (ANN) is used to model the effects of laser power, welding speed, clamp pressure and stand-off distance on weld lap-shear strength in laser transmission welding (LTW) of acrylic (polymathy methacrylate). A set of experimental data on diode laser weld lap-shear strengths was used to train and test the ANN from which the neurons relations were gradually extracted to develop a model. The developed ANN model can be used for the analysis and prediction of the complex relationships between the above mentioned process parameters and weld lap-shear strength. The results indicated that increase in laser power and clamp pressure increases the weld lap-shear strength whereas welding speed and stand off distance had a decreasing affect on shear strength at high value.

This research article is focusing on the optimization of different welding process parameters which affect the weldability of stainless steel (AISI) 304H, Taguchi technique was used to optimize the welding parameters and the fracture mode characterization was studied. A number of experiments have been conducted. L9 orthogonal array (OA) (3×3) was applied. Analysis of variance ( ANOVA) and signal to noise ratio (SNR) was applied to determine the effect of different welding parameters such as welding current, wire feed speed and gas flow rate on mechanical, microstructure properties of SS304H. Ultimate tensile strength (UTS), toughness, microhardness (VHN), and mode of fracture was examined to determine weldability of AISI 304H and it was observed from results that welding voltage has major impact whereas gas flow rate has minor impact on ultimate tensile strength of the welded joints. Optimum process parameters were found to be 23 V, 350 IPM travel speed of wire and 15 l/min gas flow rate for tensile strength and mode of fracture was ductile fracture for tensile test specimen.

Laser welding–brazing of 5A06 aluminum to Ti6Al4V titanium in a butt configuration was carried out to discuss the influences of welding parameters on dissimilar joint properties. The effects of laser offset, welding speed, and laser power on the spreading length of the molten aluminum liquid, interface fracture zone width (IFZW), fracture roughness, intermetallic compounds (IMCs) thickness, and tensile strength were also investigated. The microstructure and fracture of the joint were also studied. The results show that the tensile strength of the joint is not only influenced by the thickness and type of IMCs, but also influenced by the spreading ability of the aluminum liquid, the fracture area broken at the Ti/fusing zone (FZ) interface, and the relative area of the brittle and ductile fracture in FZ. A dissimilar butt joint with an IMC thickness of 2.79 μm was obtained by adjusting the laser offset, welding speed, and laser power to 500 μm, 11 mm/s and 1130 W, respectively. The maximum tensile strength of the joint was up to 183 MPa, which is equivalent to 83% of the tensile strength of the 5A06 aluminum alloy.
