This research addresses a variant of the traveling salesman problem in drone-based delivery systems known as the TSP-D. The TSP-D is a combinatorial optimization problem in which a truck and a drone collaborate to deliver parcels to customers, with the objective of minimizing the total delivery time. Determining the optimal solution is NP-hard; thus, the size of the problems that can be solved optimally is limited. Therefore, metaheuristics are used to solve the problem. Metaheuristics are adaptive and intelligent algorithms that have proved their success in many similar problems. In this study, a solution to the TSP-D problem using the greedy, randomized adaptive search procedure with two local search alternatives and a self-adaptive neighborhood selection scheme is presented. The proposed approach was tested on 200 instances with different properties from the publicly available “Instances of TSP with Drone” benchmark. Results were evaluated against state-of-the-art algorithms. Non-parametric statistical tests concluded that the proposed approach has comparable performance to the rival algorithms (p=0.074) in terms of tour duration. The proposed approach has better or similar performance in instances where the drone and truck have the same speed (α=1).

Multiobjective density driven evolutionary algorithm (MODdEA) has been quite successful in solving multiobjective optimization problems (MOPs). To further improve its performance and address its deficiencies, this paper proposes a hybrid evolutionary algorithm based on dimensional diversity (DD) and firework explosion (FE). DD is defined to reflect the diversity degree of population dimension. Based on DD, a selection scheme is designed to balance diversity and convergence. A hybrid variation based on FE and genetic operator is designed to facilitate diversity of population. The proposed algorithm is tested on 14 tests problems with diverse characteristics and compared with three state-of-the-art designs. Experimental results show that the proposed design is better or at par with the chosen state-of-the-art algorithms for multiobjective optimization.

Optimizing a problem is common among the researchers in all the fields. The worst case of the optimization problem is that when it is not solved by putting lots of efforts and human capital is spoiled in dealing with the problem. So, to search for the optimal solution of a problem is becoming a tedious job for the scholars. Many algorithms have been applied to solve these long-standing complex problems. In this paper, Drosophila Food search optimization (DFO) Algorithm is applied, which explores its vision foraging behavior in the global optimization process. The objective behind the use of DFOA is to achieve fast computation, maximizing resource utilization and minimizing makespan. The survey of our work presents the state-of-the-art in recent research.

The paper proposes a modification of the simulated annealing algorithm as applied to problems that have a fragmented structure. An algorithm for simulating annealing for the traveling salesman problem is considered and its applicability to the optimization problem on a set of permutations is shown. It is proved that the problem of equilibrium placement of point objects on a plane has a fragmentary structure and, therefore, reduces to an optimization problem on a set of permutations. The results of numerical experiments for various types of algorithms for finding the optimal solution in the equilibrium placement problem are presented.

The quantitative evaluation of producer and injector well interference based on well operation data (profiles of flow rates/injectivities and bottomhole/reservoir pressures) with the help of CRM (Capacitance-Resistive Models) is an optimization problem with large set of variables and constraints. The analytical solution cannot be found because of the complex form of the objective function for this problem. Attempts to find the solution with stochastic algorithms take unacceptable time and the result may be far from the optimal solution. Besides, the use of universal (commercial) optimizers hides the details of step by step solution from the user, for example&nbsp;— the ambiguity of the solution as the result of data inaccuracy.<br> The present article concerns two variants of CRM problem. The authors present a new algorithm of solving the problems with the help of “General Quadratic Programming Algorithm”. The main advantage of the new algorithm is the greater performance in comparison with the other known algorithms. Its other advantage is the possibility of an ambiguity analysis. This article studies the conditions which guarantee that the first variant of problem has a unique solution, which can be found with the presented algorithm. Another algorithm for finding the approximate solution for the second variant of the problem is also considered. The method of visualization of approximate solutions set is presented. The results of experiments comparing the new algorithm with some previously known are given.

We consider a decision-making problem to evaluate absolute ratings of alternatives from the results of their pairwise comparisons according to two criteria, subject to constraints on the ratings. We formulate the problem as a bi-objective optimization problem of constrained matrix approximation in the Chebyshev sense in logarithmic scale. The problem is to approximate the pairwise comparison matrices for each criterion simultaneously by a common consistent matrix of unit rank, which determines the vector of ratings. We represent and solve the optimization problem in the framework of tropical (idempotent) algebra, which deals with the theory and applications of idempotent semirings and semifields. The solution involves the introduction of two parameters that represent the minimum values of approximation error for each matrix and thereby describe the Pareto frontier for the bi-objective problem. The optimization problem then reduces to a parametrized vector inequality. The necessary and sufficient conditions for solutions of the inequality serve to derive the Pareto frontier for the problem. All solutions of the inequality, which correspond to the Pareto frontier, are taken as a complete Pareto-optimal solution to the problem. We apply these results to the decision problem of interest and present illustrative examples.

Given a classifier ensemble and a dataset, many examples may be confidently and accurately classified after only a subset of the base models in the ensemble is evaluated. Dynamically deciding to classify early can reduce both mean latency and CPU without harming the accuracy of the original ensemble. To achieve such gains, we propose jointly optimizing the evaluation order of the base models and early-stopping thresholds. Our proposed objective is a combinatorial optimization problem, but we provide a greedy algorithm that achieves a 4-approximation of the optimal solution under certain assumptions, which is also the best achievable polynomial-time approximation bound. Experiments on benchmark and real-world problems show that the proposed Quit When You Can (QWYC) algorithm can speed up average evaluation time by 1.8–2.7 times on even jointly trained ensembles, which are more difficult to speed up than independently or sequentially trained ensembles. QWYC’s joint optimization of ordering and thresholds also performed better in experiments than previous fixed orderings, including gradient boosted trees’ ordering.

Convolutional neural networks (CNNs) have achieved tremendous success in solving complex classification problems. Motivated by this success, there have been proposed various compression methods for downsizing the CNNs to deploy them on resource-constrained embedded systems. However, a new type of vulnerability of compressed CNNs known as the adversarial examples has been discovered recently, which is critical for security-sensitive systems because the adversarial examples can cause malfunction of CNNs and can be crafted easily in many cases. In this paper, we proposed a compression framework to produce compressed CNNs robust against such adversarial examples. To achieve the goal, our framework uses both pruning and knowledge distillation with adversarial training. We formulate our framework as an optimization problem and provide a solution algorithm based on the proximal gradient method, which is more memory-efficient than the popular ADMM-based compression approaches. In experiments, we show that our framework can improve the trade-off between adversarial robustness and compression rate compared to the existing state-of-the-art adversarial pruning approach.

Surrogate-assisted evolutionary algorithms have the potential to be of high value for real-world optimization problems when fitness evaluations are expensive, limiting the number of evaluations that can be performed. In this article, we consider the domain of pseudo-Boolean functions in a black-box setting. Moreover, instead of using a surrogate model as an approximation of a fitness function, we propose to precisely learn the coefficients of the Walsh decomposition of a fitness function and use the Walsh decomposition as a surrogate. If the coefficients are learned correctly, then the Walsh decomposition values perfectly match with the fitness function, and, thus, the optimal solution to the problem can be found by optimizing the surrogate without any additional evaluations of the original fitness function. It is known that the Walsh coefficients can be efficiently learned for pseudo-Boolean functions with k -bounded epistasis and known problem structure. We propose to learn dependencies between variables first and, therefore, substantially reduce the number of Walsh coefficients to be calculated. After the accurate Walsh decomposition is obtained, the surrogate model is optimized using GOMEA, which is considered to be a state-of-the-art binary optimization algorithm. We compare the proposed approach with standard GOMEA and two other Walsh decomposition-based algorithms. The benchmark functions in the experiments are well-known trap functions, NK-landscapes, MaxCut, and MAX3SAT problems. The experimental results demonstrate that the proposed approach is scalable at the supposed complexity of O (ℓ log ℓ) function evaluations when the number of subfunctions is O (ℓ) and all subfunctions are k -bounded, outperforming all considered algorithms.

We introduce landmark grammars , a new family of context-free grammars aimed at describing the HTML source code of pages published by large and templated websites and therefore at effectively tackling Web data extraction problems. Indeed, they address the inherent ambiguity of HTML, one of the main challenges of Web data extraction, which, despite over twenty years of research, has been largely neglected by the approaches presented in literature. We then formalize the Smallest Extraction Problem (SEP), an optimization problem for finding the grammar of a family that best describes a set of pages and contextually extract their data. Finally, we present an unsupervised learning algorithm to induce a landmark grammar from a set of pages sharing a common HTML template, and we present an automatic Web data extraction system. The experiments on consolidated benchmarks show that the approach can substantially contribute to improve the state-of-the-art.

Evolution strategies (ES) are a family of strong stochastic methods for global optimization and have proved their capability in avoiding local optima more than other optimization methods. Many researchers have investigated different versions of the original evolution strategy with good results in a variety of optimization problems. However, the convergence rate of the algorithm to the global optimum stays asymptotic. In order to accelerate the convergence rate, a hybrid approach is proposed using the nonlinear simplex method (Nelder-Mead) and an adaptive scheme to control the local search application, and the authors demonstrate that such combination yields significantly better convergence. The new proposed method has been tested on 15 complex benchmark functions and applied to the bi-objective portfolio optimization problem and compared with other state-of-the-art techniques. Experimental results show that the performance is improved by this hybridization in terms of solution eminence and strong convergence.
