Accurate assessment of dental student performance during preclinical operative mannequin courses is an essential milestone within the educational process. Training on novel, multicolored 3D-printed teeth resulted in higher performances of the students in comparison to training on standard, monochromatic plastic teeth. However, low reliability of students’ grading using standard, monochromatic plastic teeth was reported. The aim of this study was to verify whether the use of 3D multicolored teeth can (1) provide better inter- and intra-examiner reliability, and (2) assess the effect of instructors’ experience on their reliability. The novel tooth analogs consisted of digitally planned and 3D-printed plastic teeth containing green, yellow, and red stratifications according to increasing depths of preparation. Thirty-seven dental students performed three Class I preparations on the 3D-printed teeth, and these underwent blind evaluation by two examiners of varied experience at two timepoints. The data were compared with preparations done on conventional (monochromatic) plastic teeth. Results indicated excellent inter-examiner reliability on 3D-printed teeth (0.768 < ICC < 0.929), but only moderate reliability with conventional plastic teeth (0.314 < ICC < 0.672). The examiner having more experience was found to show higher intra-examiner reliability (ICC = 0.716 and 0.612 using 3D-printed teeth and conventional teeth, respectively) than the less experienced examiner (ICC = 0.481 and 0.095 using 3D-printed teeth and conventional teeth, respectively). The novel, multicolored 3D-printed teeth can provide more objective evaluation of cavity preparation compared with conventional plastic teeth.

The purpose of this report is to present educational material that would allow the dental student to learn to easily identify the morphologic characteristics of permanent teeth, and how they fit together (occlusion). In order to do this, macro models of permanent teeth with no attrition were carved in wax and later molded with alginate. These molds were filled with plaster, dental stone and/or cold-cured acrylic resin. The large individual dental stone tooth models were mounted on a wax base, thus obtaining maxillary and mandibular arches which were occluded. These dental arches were molded with plaster or dental stone. The authors suggest that these types of macro models allow an excellent visualization of the morphologic characteristics of permanent teeth and occlusion. Dental students are able to carve the permanent dentition in wax with great facility when they can observe macro models.

Introduction: The controversy over the presence of empathic decline within the course in students of medicine, dentistry and health sciences in general, has not fully been studied. This controversy could be partially solved if massive studies of empathy levels are made in similar cultural, social and economic contexts.Material and Methods: Empathy levels within the course were studied in eighteen dental schools from six countries in Latin America (2013). The mean of the empathy levels were used to study the behavior between first and fifth academic years. The values of empathy levels within the course were observed by applying the Jefferson Scale of Physician Empathy, the Spanish version. All these studies were cross-sectional. The value of means observed, were subjected to regression studies and further adjustment curves were obtained and the coefficient of determination were calculated.Results: Six different models of behavior were observed, which found that five of them suffer empathic decline within the course, but with different final results: in some the decline persists until the fifth academic year and in others, this decline ‘recovers’ persistently until the fifth academic year. The sixth model is characterized by a constant and persistent increase of levels of empathy within the course until the last academic year.Discussion: There are six different models for the behavior of means of levels of empathy within the course evaluated by a common methodology in eighteen dental schools from six countries of Latin America. These findings support the existence of variability of empathic response and a comprehensive approach is needed to find the causes that give rise to this variability.Conclusion: In dental students of Latin America, there is variability in the behavior of the distribution in means between the academic years of the dentistry schools examined in this study.

AbstractIntroduction:Colleges and universities are experiencing increasing demand for online courses in many healthcare disciplines, including emergency medical services (EMS). Development and implementation of online paramedic courses with the quality of education experienced in the traditional classroom setting is essential in order to maintain the integrity of the educational process. Currently, there is conflicting evidence of whether a significant difference exists in student performance between online and traditional nursing and allied health courses. However, there are no published investigations of the effectiveness of online learning by paramedic students.Hypothesis:Performance of paramedic students enrolled in an online, undergraduate, research methods course is equivalent to the performance of students enrolled in the same course provided in a traditional, classroom environment.Methods:Academic performance, learning styles, and course satisfaction surveys were compared between two groups of students. The course content was identical for both courses and taught by the same instructor during the same semester. The primary difference between the traditional course and the online course was the method of lecture delivery. Lectures for the on-campus students were provided live in a traditional classroom setting using PowerPoint slides. Lectures for the online students were provided using the same PowerPoint slides with prerecorded streaming audio and video.Results:A convenience sample of 23 online and 10 traditional students participated in this study. With the exception of two learning domains, the two groups of students exhibited similar learning styles as assessed using the Grasha-Riechmann Student Learning Style Scales instrument. The online students scored significantly lower in the competitive and dependent dimensions than did the on-campus students. Academic performance was similar between the two groups. The online students devoted slightly more time to the course than did the campus students, although this difference did not reach statistical significance. In general, the online students believed the online audio lectures were more effective than the traditional live lectures.Conclusion:Distance learning technology appears to be an effective mechanism for extending didactic paramedic education off-campus, and may be beneficial particularly to areas that lack paramedic training programs or adequate numbers of qualified instructors.

Objective: This cross-sectional observational study was accomplished at Isra University to evaluate the self-apprehension of dental students related to their own smile. Material and Methods: This study was comprised of 166 dental students belonging to both genders. A structured selfadministered questionnaire was used to conduct a survey among undergraduate dental students at all study levels in Isra University. Questionnaire was designed to observe the self-apprehension and satisfaction of students with reference to their dental appearance. Data analysis was done using descriptive statistics via 21st version of SPSS. 0.05% was established as the level of significance. Results: 166 students (32 males and 134 females) participated in this survey. 32.5% students were shy as against 91.6% students who were bold at smiling in public. 55.4% students preferred to be photographed from side pose while 69.9% were inspired by other’s smile. In terms of teeth dimensions, 60.2%, 54.8% and 46.4% students were gratified with the length, breadth and form of their teeth respectively. Conclusion: This study concludes that greater number of dental student were self-assured regarding their apprehension on their own dental appearance. Majority of the females though contented with the dimensions and contour of their teeth, urged to have lighter teeth.

Abstract Deep neural networks (DNNs) have been widely applied for detecting COVID-19 in medical images. Existing studies mainly apply transfer learning and other data representation strategies to generate accurate point estimates. The generalization power of these networks is always questionable due to being developed using small datasets and failing to report their predictive confidence. Quantifying uncertainties associated with DNN predictions is a prerequisite for their trusted deployment in medical settings. Here we apply and evaluate three uncertainty quantification techniques for COVID-19 detection using chest X-Ray (CXR) images. The novel concept of uncertainty confusion matrix is proposed and new performance metrics for the objective evaluation of uncertainty estimates are introduced. Through comprehensive experiments, it is shown that networks pertained on CXR images outperform networks pretrained on natural image datasets such as ImageNet. Qualitatively and quantitatively evaluations also reveal that the predictive uncertainty estimates are statistically higher for erroneous predictions than correct predictions. Accordingly, uncertainty quantification methods are capable of flagging risky predictions with high uncertainty estimates. We also observe that ensemble methods more reliably capture uncertainties during the inference. DNN-based solutions for COVID-19 detection have been mainly proposed without any principled mechanism for risk mitigation. Previous studies have mainly focused on on generating single-valued predictions using pretrained DNNs. In this paper, we comprehensively apply and comparatively evaluate three uncertainty quantification techniques for COVID-19 detection using chest X-Ray images. The novel concept of uncertainty confusion matrix is proposed and new performance metrics for the objective evaluation of uncertainty estimates are introduced for the first time. Using these new uncertainty performance metrics, we quantitatively demonstrate where and when we could trust DNN predictions for COVID-19 detection from chest X-rays. It is important to note the proposed novel uncertainty evaluation metrics are generic and could be applied for evaluation of probabilistic forecasts in all classification problems.

The Academy of Dental Education was formed to encourage and provide an avenue for the undergraduate dental students to contribute to the professional literature and otherwise share their academic knowledge and skills with their fellow students. The membership to the Academy of Dental Education is open to all Professors of Dental and Medical Colleges who teach B.D.S. students. The Academy was started by the initiative of 9 Founder Fellows on April 07, 2013 with the Head office situated at Salem, Tamilnadu. The Academy of Dental Education is registered under the Tamilnadu Societies Registration Act 27 of 1975, with Registration No.87 / 2013 on 07/06/2013 at Salem. To meet one of the objectives, it was decided to publish a Journal exclusively for Dental students, titled "Journal of Academy of Dental Education", every six months to start with. The publication of the inaugural issue of the Journal has made this dream come true. The salient feature of the "Journal of Academy of Dental Education," is the fact that the first author, at the time of submission of the article, should be an undergraduate dental student.

Aim: To investigate the depression, anxiety and stress, stressors and relieving factors among dental students at Kulliyyah of Dentistry (KOD). Materials and methods:  A cross-sectional study was conducted among 222 dental students. Their socio-demographic data, self-reported depression, anxiety and stress (DASS-21) scores, causes and relieving factors were collected using validated semi-structured pre-tested questionnaires. The data was analysed using percentages, chi-square test and Binary logistic regression tests with SPSS version 24. Results: The prevalence of depression, anxiety and stress was 41%, 68.9% and 34.2% respectively. Cross analysis showed that academic-related and laboratory or clinical related reasons were significantly associated with the depressive symptoms [(X2= 15.86, p<0.0001) and (X2= 10.45, p=0.001) respectively] and stress symptoms [(X2= 19.95, p<0.0001) and (X2= 6.11, p<0.05) respectively] among dental student. Furthermore, the item ‘examination’ being the highest factor chosen in academic-related stressors. The response for stress-relieving factors was high for Islamic ritual prayer/spiritual activities (94.6%), sleeping (86.5%) and doing exercise/playing sports (76.1%), while ‘seeking professional help’ (19.8%) was the least. Conclusion: This study shows that depressive, anxiety and stress symptoms are prevalent among dental students. Islamic ritual prayer and involvement in spiritual related activities was found to be the most preferred way for students to relief stress. Hence, it is vital that the university continually evaluates the psychological health of the students, tailor preventive measures and spiritual related programs to help students to cope with stress.

Abstract Introduction The COVID-19 pandemic has had a significant impact on education. e-Learning has been becoming most popular. Satisfaction of the student is one of important goal of e-Learning, therefore factors affecting this satisfaction should be considered extensively. This study aims to evaluate the effect of learning style and General Self-Efficacy (GSE) on satisfaction of e-Learning in dental student. Method Electronic questionnaires were sent to 85 fifth and sixth-year students who had passed the face-to-face orthodontics course in the previous semester and were studying online orthodontics at the time of this study. Three questionnaires were used including Soloman and Felder learning styles index, General self-efficacy questionnaire and Satisfaction questionnaire for online education. Results The results of the reliability test showed that Cronbach’s alpha index for the self-efficacy and satisfaction questionnaire was 0.836 and 0.96, respectively. The correlation between satisfaction and the dimensions of learning style showed that the active dimension of processing information had a significant relationship with the level of satisfaction. In the understanding dimension, a relatively strong correlation was observed in the Global dimension. Moderate significant relationship between the total score of self-efficacy and the level of satisfaction has been found. Conclusion The results of the present study highlight the necessity of more studies regarding defining effective on student satisfaction during e-Learning. GSES and active learning style in the processing dimension and global learning style in the understanding dimension affect students' satisfaction.

Abstract Background: Temporomandibular disorders (TMD) are a board category of conditions arising from the various components of the temporomandibular joint (TMJ) complex. Bio-psychosocial model is the most accepted theory describing the etiopathogenesis of TMD. Dental students are vulnerable to psychological disorders including anxiety, depression and stress. Hence, the aim of the current study was to evaluate the TMD among dental students of various academic levels and explore the association of TMD with biographic, academic, and psychosocial parameters. Methods: A total of 246 students of a dental school in Saudi Arabia were chosen for the study. After getting consent, all students were examined as per the diagnostic criteria/Temporomandibular disorders (DC/TMD) including components from axis-I and axis-II. Results: The overall cross-sectional prevalence of TMD was found to be 36.99%. Pain arising from the jaw, temple, and peri-auricular area was the most commonly reported symptom and elicited sign during examination. Among the pain-related TMD, myalgia was the commonest diagnosed condition, whereas disc displacement with reduction was found prevalent in intra-articular disorder category. Female (OR=1.94; P=0.004), married (OR=1.74; P=0.04), and students in clinical levels (OR=1.65; P=0.03) were shown to have significantly higher risk to develop TMD. Among the psychosocial parameters, parafunctional habits (OR=2.10; P<0.001) and anxiety (OR=1.55; P=0.04) are shown to increase risk of developing TMD. Students with any TMD reported to have significantly higher pain intensity (OR=1.68; P=0.01) and jaw functional limitations (OR=1.45; P=0.008). Conclusion: Dental students especially in the clinical levels were shown to poses higher risk of developing TMD, hence strategies such as academic counselling and objective evaluation via rubrics should be planned to modify the administration of the curriculum, training methods and evaluation process.

Introduction: Demonstration of the access cavity preparation procedures to dental students is challenging due to the limited operating field and detailed nature of the procedures. It is especially difficult to visualize how instruments are functioning inside the pulp space. The aim of this study was to develop and compare two different views of video demonstration in teaching access cavity preparation. Materials and Methods: Two videos of access cavity preparation were filmed, showing occlusal view of a whole tooth (WT) and sagittal view of a sectioned tooth (ST). Using quasirandomization, third year dental students (n=57) were divided into two groups to watch either one of the videos. The perception and performance of both groups were compared using Mann-Whitney U test and Fisher exact test. Results: At baseline, group WT (n=29) and group ST (n=28) were not significantly different in terms of operative scores (p=0.330). After watching the videos, the basic understanding of the theories were similar between both groups. However, ST responded more positively towards the helpfulness of the video in visualizing the inner anatomy of the tooth and in implementing the procedures (p<0.05). ST also completed the exercise within a shorter time (p<0.001). Nevertheless, the quality of the prepared access cavities was not significantly different between groups. Conclusion(s): Using sagittal view of sectioned tooth in video demonstration of access cavity preparation can improve students learning and performance speed. We highly recommend showing the sagittal view of sectioned tooth in video demonstration of access cavity preparation.
