An in-flight unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) free-space optical (FSO) communication channel model is proposed by considering the beam deviation of the UAV under different motion states and the phase distortion caused by atmospheric turbulences. The influence of the different motion states and turbulences on the communication quality is evaluated through phase screen and Monte Carlo methods. When the average bit error rate (BER) is 10−5, the signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) should be increased from 13 dB to 20 dB when the tilt angle of the UAV increases from 0 to 5 mrad. An SNR of up to 20 dB is required when the variance of the wind σα2 is 2 mrad. The performance of the in-flight UAV FSO link can be effectively improved through spatial diversity receiving technology. The BER of lower than 10−5 can be obtained just with an SNR of 13 dB if the spatial diversity array with four receivers is used.

Free-space optical (FSO) communication systems have attracted considerable research interest owing to its high transmission rates and its efficient solution for the last mile problem. Atmospheric turbulence degrades the performance of FSO systems. To estimate the received signal, Channel State Information (CSI) or blind detection is used. The blind detection estimates the received signal without the need for pilot signals which reduce the throughput and increase the complexity of the signal. In this paper, we have proposed a relay technique which utilizes the blind detection method for FSO communications. This proposed technique would improve the performance of the FSO system compared to the direct link method. It is observed that the proposed method achieves a signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) close to the SNR reported by CSI method maintaining the same average bit error rate, provided that only a small observation window is employed. Moreover, Monte Carlo simulation results are further provided to demonstrate the validity of the derived approximated average bit error rate.

In this paper, we calculate and measure the SNR theoretically and experimental for digital full duplex optical communication systems for different ranges in free space, the system consists of transmitter and receiver in each side. The semiconductor laser (pointer) was used as a carrier wave in free space with the specification is 5mW power and 650nm wavelength. The type of optical detector was used a PIN with area 1mm2 and responsively 0.4A/W for this wavelength. The results show a high quality optical communication system for different range from (300-1300)m with different bit rat (60-140)kbit/sec is achieved with best values of the signal to noise ratio (SNR).

Abstract In this paper, we study the performance improvement of free space optical (FSO) communication system with spatial diversity techniques employing hybrid pulse position modulation-binary phase shift keying-subcarrier intensity modulation (PPM-BPSK-SIM). The involvement of multiple photo-detectors in diversity based FSO systems offers an effective way to overcome scntillation. In this paper, we have simulated the bit error rate (BER) with respect to different parameters like average SNR, link distance at various weather conditions. The simulation results are verified in Matlab environment with the mathematical analysis. The simulation results show that higher order single input multiple output (SIMO) system achieves better BER performance and hybrid PPM-BPSK-SIM has significant improved performance than the common modulation schemes like PPM, BPSK-SIM.

The analysis of the connection between the bandwidth and the dynamic range, the signal-to-noise ratio, the resolution time and the bandwidth is carried out. The problems are solved by deriving analytical dependencies based on the Shannon – Hartley theorem, as well as the well-known postulates of the theory of radio engineering circuits and signals. The study of analytical relations allows us to identify restrictions on the choice of communication channel parameters.

We experimentally demonstrated full-duplex light-emitting diode (LED)-to-LED visible light communication (VLC) using LEDs as the transmitter and receiver. Firstly, we investigated the performance dependency on the wavelengths of the LED transmitter and receiver by measuring the rise time and signal-to-noise ratio (SNR). Through the investigation, we were able to choose the optimal LED color set for LED-to-LED VLC using Shannon’s channel capacity law. The bit error rate (BER) results of full-duplex and half-duplex LED-to-LED VLC systems with the optimal LED sets are shown to compare the performance. Furthermore, we discuss major distortions and signal losses in the full-duplex LED-to-LED VLC system.

A structure of faster-than-Nyquist (FTN) signaling combined with superposition coded modulation (SCM) is considered. The so-called FTN-SCM structure is able to achieve the constrained capacity of FTN signaling and only requires a low detection complexity. By deriving a new observation model suitable for FTN-SCM, we offer the power allocation based on a proper detection method. Simulation results show that, at any given spectral efficiency, the bit error rate (BER) curve of FTN-SCM lies clearly outside the minimum signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) boundary of orthogonal signaling with a larger alphabet. The achieved data rates are also close to the maximum data rates of the certain shaping pulse.

OFDM is a key modulation and multiplexing technique. The basic system structure of OFDM is introduced firstly. This paper chose appropriate implementation schemes for channel coding, PAPR(Peak To Average Power Ratio) reducing and synchronization of the OFDM system based on the minimum BER(Bit Error Rate). Finally, the paper realized the simulation and got the BER in different SNR(Signal To Noise Ratio) in the matlab environment .
