The thermal design is one of the most important stages in the design process of electrical machines. Thanks to software packages, like Motor-CAD, rotating machine designers can predict the thermal operation of the machines with high precision. However, a Motor-CAD equivalent for linear machines does not exist. Thus, linear machine designers must develop specific thermal analysis tools when designing the machines. In this article, a generic thermal analysis tool for different kinds of linear machines is presented. The model has been designed in MATLAB Simulink. Hence, it should be easy to implement for most engineers. The article describes the configuration of the different elements of the tool. The calibration parameters and procedure, and typical values of the calibration variables, are also given in the document. Finally, in order to demonstrate the generic nature of the tool, the model is experimentally validated via DC thermal tests to a linear induction machine and a linear switched-flux permanent magnet machine. The results show that, despite being simple and easy to implement, the model can predict the thermal operation of different machines with high precision.

It is desirable to be able to turn-around thermal analysis results in a couple of minutes early phases of a satellite thermal design. Therefore, ThermXL-spreadsheet-based Thermal Analysis Tool is one of the very flexible and easy-to-use tool that is suited to preliminary design of a nanosatellite. This paper focuses on the thermal design and the results of an initial analysis of the nanosatellite by using ThermXL. The goal of this study is to take suitable measures to ensure all the components will operate in their safe range of temperatures and also a proper heat rejection. The nanosatellite such as Cube Satellite (CubeSat) is a miniaturized satellite that has dimensions of 10cm × 10cm × 10cm and weights of 1kg. The thermal model of CubeSat was modelled and the thermal analysis was performed. The thermal control analysis on this CubeSat with passive thermal control has been conducted by the ThermXL program that provided by ITP Engines. Temperature distribution of solutions was computed with ThermXL. Temperature data met the need of the mission. The results of the temperatures show that the thermal design of nanosatellite is feasible.

Shell stiffeners are used effectively to prevent preferential local buckling of LNG tank shell. In this paper, Finite element method (FEM) is applied to pay attention to the thermal analysis on the shell stiffeners of double steel wall LNG storage tank. The structural requirements according to British Standard 7777-2:1993 has been considered and then some dimensional adjustments of shell stiffeners are made to evaluate their influence on the thermal field of double steel wall LNG storage tank. Temperature distributions and heat flux of different dimensional shell stiffeners are presented. Though the analysis of results, it puts forward the conclusion that the dimensional design of shell stiffeners used in double steel wall LNG storage tank shall take not only the structural design requirements but also the thermal design ones into consideration in order to finally save cost in both construction and normal operation.

High-precision reducer is the core component of industrial robots. In order to achieve the comprehensive performance testing of precision reducers, an instrument with a vertical layout and a cylindrical structure is designed. As a rotating machine, the inevitable coupling misalignment of the instrument can lead to vibration faults which lead to errors in the test. So it is pretty necessary to diagnose and monitor the coupling misalignment while the instrument is working. The causes of the coupling misaligned fault of the instrument and the relationship between the misalignment fault and torque ripple are analyzed in this paper. A method of using the torque transducer in the measurement chain of the instrument to diagnose the coupling misalignment is proposed in this paper. Many experiments have been done to test the capability of detecting the coupling misalignment using this method. Experimental results show that the amplitude of torque ripple of the shaft is linearly related to the coupling misalignment and is quadratically related to the rotation speed of the shaft when the misalignment exists in the shaft. The combination of components at the rotation frequency (fr) and the additional components can be used to diagnose faults due to coupling misalignment.

Thermal design and the working temperature control have been a key factor in the design of electronic devices and system. In this paper, a sort of heat sink collocated with high-power IGBT module, which is commonly used in car-carrying motor control system, is designed based on thermal analysis by means of CFD simulation and computer-aided analyzing, also the influence relations of structure parameters with thermal performance are studied. With thermal control as the overall design objective, structure parameters of heat sink are determined according to the obtained relations. Further, thermal performance of the designed heat sink is simulated and analyzed in CFD software to examine the validity of the design result. In this way, a method of thermal analyzing and structure parameter design for heat sink, which is proved as an efficacious approach, is introduced and can be used to thermal design and analysis for similar products.

The flow modeling approaches employed in computational fluid dynamics (CFD) codes dedicated to the thermal analysis of electronic equipment are generally not specific for the analysis of forced airflows over populated electronic boards. This limitation has been previously highlighted (Eveloy, V. et al., 2004, IEEE Trans. Compon., Packag., Technol. 27, pp. 268–282), with component junction temperature prediction errors of up to 35% reported. This study evaluates the potential of three candidate low-Reynolds number eddy viscosity turbulence models to improve predictive accuracy. An array of fifteen board-mounted PQFPs is analyzed in a 4 m/s airflow. Using the shear stress transport k-ω model, significant improvements in component junction temperature prediction accuracy are obtained relative to the standard high-Reynolds number k-ε model, which are attributed to better prediction of both board leading edge heat transfer and component thermal interaction. Such improvements would enable parametric analysis of product thermal performance to be undertaken with greater confidence in the thermal design process, and the generation of more accurate temperature boundary conditions for use in Physics-of-Failure based reliability prediction methods. The case is made for vendors of CFD codes dedicated to the thermal analysis of electronics to consider the adoption of eddy viscosity turbulence models more suited to board-level analysis.

The large-sized space environmental simulation test facility is mainly used for providing thermal radiation environment in high-vacuum, cold and dark space for satellites, spacecraft, lunar spacecraft to carry out whole satellite thermal vacuum test and for large equipment like antenna to carry out tests in TV conditions. Monitoring the spacecraft’s surface optical image or temperature is a main task in space environment simulation test. In previous tests, optical image test mainly took place in a fixed position, so the measuring location and angle are limited. This paper focuses on large spherical space environmental simulation test facility, and designs a large arc-shape high-precision walking device in a space environment simulation test device. It introduces key technology in detail like structure design, thermal design, processes and manufacturing, etc. The test results show that this device can work steadily and reliably under simulation space environments, and the precision exceeds 0.5°.
