The paper aims at performing a comprehensive experimental study on the peculiar properties of a bolted joint, and investigates the damping induced at different interfaces (between flanges, bolt head/nut and flange, threads) during vibrations. A novel, simplified, single-bolt system joining a two-beam structure is designed and tested. Experimental results under different boundary conditions are presented, and the influence of the harmonic excitation force, as well as the bolt tension, is investigated. The test results show how the contact interface between the clamped flanges plays an important role in terms of frictional damping provided to the system during vibration, while the contact interfaces between the head/nut and flange, and secondarily between the threads, affect the system response at a less, but not negligible, extent. The test setup and test procedure can provide a database to validate single bolt contact models to be included in a more complex structure.

Due to the complex structure of insulators, it is difficult to use parameters such as icicle length or ice thickness of an insulator to directly characterize the degree of icing of an insulator. Rotating conductors are widely used in monitoring icing degree on insulators, but the relationship between ice degree on the insulator and the rotating conductor has not been verified. In this paper, the water droplets collision coefficient α1 was put forward to characterize icing degree, and a new numerical calculation model where α1 on different regions of an insulator is calculated was proposed. Combining the freezing fraction α3 of the insulator and rotating conductor, the equivalent relationship of ice weight between insulator and rotating conductor can be established, which was afterwards verified through the icing tests. The test results indicate that ice weight on an insulator increases linearly with the increase of ice weight on the rotating conductor, and the model proposed in this paper can reflect actual results more accurately than previous models. In such cases, the method of using ice weight on a rotating conductor to predict that on an insulator based on the model proposed in this paper could be widely adopted.

Efficient and accurate finite element (FE) modelling of bolted joints is essential for increasing confidence in the investigation of structural vibrations. However, modelling of bolted joints for the investigation is often found to be very challenging. This paper proposes an appropriate FE representation of bolted joints for the prediction of the dynamic behaviour of a bolted joint structure. Two different FE models of the bolted joint structure with two different FE element connectors, which are CBEAM and CBUSH, representing the bolted joints are developed. Modal updating is used to correlate the two FE models with the experimental model. The dynamic behaviour of the two FE models is compared with experimental modal analysis to evaluate and determine the most appropriate FE model of the bolted joint structure. The comparison reveals that the CBUSH element connectors based FE model has a greater capability in representing the bolted joints with 86 percent accuracy and greater efficiency in updating the model parameters. The proposed modelling technique will be useful in the modelling of a complex structure with a large number of bolted joints.

If promulgated as proposed, effluent guidelines for the U.S. pulp and paper industry will impose average monthly and maximum daily numerical limits of discharged AOX (adsorbable organic halogen). At this time, it is unclear whether the maximum-day variability factor used to establish the proposed effluent guidelines will provide sufficient margin for mills to achieve compliance during periods of normal but variable operating conditions within the pulping and bleaching processes. Consequently, additional information is needed to relate transient AOX loadings with final AOX discharges. This paper presents a simplistic dynamic model of AOX decay during treatment. The model consists of hydraulic characterization of an activated sludge process and a first-order decay coefficient for AOX removal. Data for model development were acquired by frequent collection of influent and effluent samples at a bleach kraft mill during a bleach plant shutdown and startup sequence.

In this paper, the extraction process of flavonoids from hemp fibers was studied. Response surface methodology (RSM) analysis of the extraction parameters indicated that optimized results would be ethanol concentration 76 vol.%, bath ratio 1:50, and reaction time 139 min; therefore, an optimal extraction rate of flavonoids of 0.2275% can be obtained. The chemical structure, surface morphology and element composition of flavonoid extracts were analyzed. The test results indicated that hemp extract contains flavonoids, which can be used to extract flavonoids from hemp fiber, so as to comprehensively develop hemp fiber and reduce the discharge of waste liquid in the traditional degumming process.

An experimental characterization is presented for an improved version of a wearable assistive device for elbow motion. The design is revised with respect to requirements for elbow motion assistance, looking at applications both in rehabilitation therapies and exercising of elderly people. A laboratory prototype is built with lightweight, portable, easy-to-use features that are verified with test results, whose discussion is also provided as a characterization of operating performance.

TORVEastro robot design is presented with a built prototype in LARM2 (Laboratory of Robot Mechatronics) for testing and characterizing its functionality for service in space stations. Several robot astronauts are designed with bulky human-like structures that cannot be convenient for outdoor space service in monitoring and maintenance of the external structures of orbital stations. The design features of TORVEastro robot are discussed with its peculiar mechanical design with 3 arm-legs as agile service robot astronaut. A lab prototype is used to test the operation performance and the feasibility of its peculiar design. The robot weighs 1 kg, and consists of a central torso, three identical three-degree of freedom (DoF) arm–legs and one vision system. Test results are reported to discuss the operation efficiency in terms of motion characteristics and power consumption during lab experiments that nevertheless show the feasibility of the robot for outdoor space applications.

Abstract Circulating inhibitors against von Willebrand factor (vWF) that show the properties of heterologous IgG antibodies have been described in a few patients with severe von Willebrand disease (vWD). The present study provides further characterization of inhibitors from two patients with severe vWD. Inhibitors in both, like polyclonal rabbit antibody, detected all sizes of multimers and the complex structure of each multimer from platelets and plasma of normal individuals as well as from plasma of patients with IIA, IIB, and IIC vWD. Both inhibitors and the rabbit antibody reacted mainly with the intact 225-Kd vWF subunit and the 189-H and 140-Kd fragments in contrast to monoclonal antibodies specific for vWF fragments that detected a higher relative proportion of 176-Kd fragment. Furthermore, all these antibodies recognized fragment III, although one inhibitor and rabbit polyclonal antibody reacted poorly and the other inhibitor did not react at all with reduced fragment II of vWF digested with Staphylococcus aureus V-8 protease. These data suggest that although human inhibitors from severe vWD patients may behave, to some extent, as polyclonal heterologous antibodies against native vWF, the former show striking differences in their target specificity as well as a much broader specificity than that described for human factor VIII inhibitors.
