The aims of this systematic review were to identify and synthesize the evidence for an association in DNA methylation/histone modifications between periodontal diseases and systemic diseases/smoking. Electronic database searches using relevant search terms in PubMed, Embase, MEDLINE, CINAHL, Web of Science, Scopus, and SciELO, and manual searches, were independently conducted to identify articles meeting the inclusion criteria. Nine studies of 1482 participants were included. Periodontitis was compared to metabolic disorders, rheumatoid arthritis (RA), cancer, and smokers, as well as healthy controls. Substantial variation regarding the reporting of sample sizes and patient characteristics, statistical analyses, and methodology was found. IL6 and TNF were modified similarly in RA and periodontitis. While TIMP-3 and GSTP-1 were significantly lower in periodontitis patients and controls than in cancer, SOCS-1, RMI2, CDH1, and COX2 were modified similarly in both cancer and periodontitis. While TLR4 in and CXCL8 were affected in periodontitis independent of smoking habit, smoking might change the transcription and methylation states of ECM organization-related genes, which exacerbated the periodontal condition. There was some evidence, albeit inconsistent, for an association between DNA methylation and periodontal diseases and systemic diseases or smokers compared to healthy patients or non-smokers.

(1) Background: Obesity and mood disorders are considered as the most prevalent morbidities in many countries. We suppose that epigenetic mechanisms may induce higher rates of obesity in subjects who suffer from mood disorders. In this systematic review, we focused on the potential roles of DNA methylation on mood disorders and obesity development. (2) Methods: This systematic review was conducted in accordance with the PRISMA statement and registered in Prospero. A systematic search was conducted in MEDLINE, Scopus, Web of Science, Cochrane Central database, EMBASE, and CINHAL. We also conducted a Grey literature search, such as Google Scholar. (3) Results: After deduplication, we identified 198 potentially related citations. Finally, ten unique studies met our inclusion criteria. We have found three overlap genes that show significant DNA methylation changes, both in obesity and depression. Pathway analysis interaction for TAPBP, BDNF, and SORBS2 confirmed the relation of these genes in both obesity and mood disorders. (4) Conclusions: While mechanisms linking both obesity and mood disorders to epigenetic response are still unknown, we have already known chronic inflammation induces a novel epigenetic program. As the results of gene enrichment, pathways analysis showed that TAPBP, BDNF, and SORBS2 linked together by inflammatory pathways. Hypermethylation in these genes might play a crucial rule in the co-occurrence of obesity and mood disorders.

Despite a number of reports in the literature on the role of epigenetic mechanisms in periodontal disease, a thorough assessment of the published studies is warranted to better comprehend the evidence on the relationship between epigenetic changes and periodontal disease and its treatment. Therefore, the aim of this systematic review is to identify and synthesize the evidence for an association between DNA methylation/histone modification and periodontal disease and its treatment in human adults. A systematic search was independently conducted to identify articles meeting the inclusion criteria. DNA methylation and histone modifications associated with periodontal diseases, gene expression, epigenetic changes after periodontal therapy, and the association between epigenetics and clinical parameters were evaluated. Sixteen studies were identified. All included studies examined DNA modifications in relation to periodontitis, and none of the studies examined histone modifications. Substantial variation regarding the reporting of sample sizes and patient characteristics, statistical analyses, and methodology, was found. There was some evidence, albeit inconsistent, for an association between DNA methylation and periodontal disease. IL6, IL6R, IFNG, PTGS2, SOCS1, and TNF were identified as candidate genes that have been assessed for DNA methylation in periodontitis. While several included studies found associations between methylation levels and periodontal disease risk, there is insufficient evidence to support or refute an association between DNA methylation and periodontal disease/therapy in human adults. Further research must be conducted to identify reproducible epigenetic markers and determine the extent to which DNA methylation can be applied as a clinical biomarker.

The aim of this review was to evaluate whether thermal imaging may constitute a reliable assessment method of musculoskeletal and temporomandibular disorders (TMD/MSD). A systematic review was conducted in the Pubmed, Scopus, Cochrane library, Web of Science, and Lilacs databases. The search terms were “musculoskeletal disorders,”“temporomandibular disorders,”“infrared thermography,”“thermography,” and “infrared imaging.” The inclusion criteria were: studies published between January 1985 and January 2021, performed in humans, with sample size equal or greater than 20 patients, written in English, Portuguese, French and/or Spanish, and full text available. The exclusion criteria were: systematic reviews, case studies, and/or studies focused on pathologies beyond the review’s domain. The risk of bias was evaluated using CASP 2018. A total of 2032 articles were retrieved. Of these, 25 studies met the inclusion criteria and were included to withdraw the following information: title, type of study, first author and year of publication, objective, number of participants, comparisons, and principal conclusions. No RCT were found. Despite some disparity, points of convergence among the majority of authors could be found. In general, healthy individuals show subtle thermal differences between contralateral homolog areas. Concerning orofacial structures, unilateral symptomatic individuals may show thermal differences equal or greater than 0.4°C. Infrared thermography accuracy in diagnosing TMD/MSD is still considered low to moderate. Despite some limitations, IRT might constitute a valuable supporting diagnostic tool in the medical field of TMD and MSD.

Background: Steroids can alleviate symptoms long enough for the patient to stop the compulsive pruritus-scratch cycle and allow for healing excoriated perianal skin, owing to potent anti-inflammatory and anti-proliferative effects. This systematic review was designed to evaluate the use of topical steroids for the treatment of primary pruritus ani.Methods: Studies were retrieved after searching the electronic databases Medline, Google Scholar, and Co-chrane Central. The search terms, pruritus ani, anal itching, idiopathic pruritus ani, primary pruritus ani and topical steroids were used. Outcomes were efficacy in reduction of pruritus and side-effects.Results: A total of 7 studies met our inclusion criteria accounting for 181 total of cases of primary pruritus ani treated with topical steroids between 1982 and 2007. On regard of the 181 cases, mean age of patients ranged from 35.4 to 49.5 years old, and similar proportion of males (51.6%) and females (48.4%) was found. Mean duration of symptoms (pruritus ani) varies widely among the studies, with a minimum 5.2 weeks to a maximum 6.5 years. The majority of studies employed hydrocortisone ointment at different concentrations (0.25% and 1%) as the primary therapy. On regard of the overall effectiveness of topical steroid therapy in patients with primary pruritus ani, it ranges between 73.9% to 100%. Few or no side effects were reported in the studies.Conclusions: This systematic review found a lack of high-quality studies on the efficacy of topical steroids in the treatment of primary pruritus ani.

<p>The aim of this systematic review was to summarize the evidence on the barriers and facilitators to the use of bicycles in adults. Search terms were defined using Health Sciences Descriptors (DeCS) and Medical Subject Headings (MeSH) and evidence was searched in the following databases: Lilacs, SciELO, PubMed, Web of Science and Science Direct. A total of seven studies met the inclusion criteria and showed that the main barriers and facilitators to the use of bicycles are related to the physical, social and natural environment characteristics and individual characteristics (cognitive, psychological and emotional aspects). Interventions in the area of public health should consider these features to increase the use of bicycles in adults.</p>

Background: Colorectal cancer (CRC) is the third most common cancer worldwide and the third leading cause of cancer-related death. It is a heterogeneous disease that develops through different genetic and epigenetic mechanisms. To date, no comprehensive systematic review investigating genetic risk factors for familial and sporadic CRC has been performed on the extended MENA (eMENA) region. Aims: This study aimed to systematically analyze genetic variations significantly associated with CRC in the eMENA region. Methods: We searched four literature databases (PubMed, Scopus, Science Direct, and Web of Science) from the time of inception until May 2019 using broad search terms to obtain all reported genetic data related to eMENA patients with CRC. Variants with an OR>1 that are associated with CRC were identified. Results: A total of 1,200 studies were obtained from our search method, 27 of which met the inclusion criteria for our systematic review, with a total of 8,230 CRC patients and 7,611 controls. Of these, 1,941 patients distributed throughout nine eMENA countries were found to carry 46 variants in 33 different genes. Interestingly, 19 variants were unique to CRC patients in the eMENA region. Interpretation: This is the first systematic review to capture the spectrum of variants significantly associated with CRC in the eMENA region. There appears to be a distinctive clinical picture for eMENA patients with CRC, and the range and distribution of variants among patients from the eMENA region differ from those noted in other ethnic groups.

Burnout has adverse effects on the health and work-related outcomes of employees. Nevertheless, little is known about effective ways of reducing burnout complaints and facilitating full return to work, which defines rehabilitation. This study consists of a systematic review of the effects of combined interventions (i.e., both person-directed and organization-directed). It also includes the identification and description of mediators of change, thereby explaining how combined interventions do or do not work. Seven electronic databases were searched for English peer-reviewed publications: the Psychology and Behavioral Sciences Collection; PsycARTICLES; Web of Science; Scopus; SocINDEX; PubMed; and PsycINFO, using various combinations of search terms (e.g., burnout AND intervention). Out of 4110 abstracts published before 29 September, 2019, 10 studies (reporting the effects of nine combined interventions) fulfilled the inclusion criteria, which were defined using PICOS criteria (participants, interventions, comparators, outcomes and study design). Although the risk of bias of the included studies is high, all combined interventions were effective in facilitating rehabilitation. Results suggest that involving employees in decision-making and enhance their job control and social support, while eliminating stressors, explain the effectiveness of the intentions. With caution, workplace health promotion practitioners are encouraged to use these findings to tackle burnout among employees.

Bipolar Disorder (BD) is a chronic a multifactorial psychiatric illness that affects mood, cognition, and functioning. BD is associated with several psychiatric conditions as well clinical comorbidities, particularly cardiovascular diseases. The neurobiology of BD is complex and multifactorial and several systems have been implicated. Considering that the Renin Angiotensin System (RAS) plays an important role in cardiovascular diseases and that recently evidence has suggested its role in psychiatric disorders, the aim of the present study is to summarize and to discuss recent findings related to the modulation of RAS components in BD. A systematic search of the literature using the electronic databases MEDLINE and LILACS was conducted through March 2019. The search terms were: “Bipolar Disorder”; “Renin Angiotensin System”; “Angiotensin 2”; “Angiotensin receptors”; “Angiotensin 1-7”; “ACE”; “ACE2”; “Mas Receptor”. We included original studies assessing RAS in BD patients. Two hundred twenty-two citations were initially retrieved. Eleven studies were included in our systematic review. In the majority of studies (6 of 8), the ACE insertion/deletion (I/D) polymorphism did not differ between BD patients and controls. BD patients presented higher plasma renin activity in comparison with controls. The studies evaluating the RAS molecules in BD are very scarce and heterogeneous. The literature suggests a potential role of RAS in BD. Further studies are necessary to investigate this relationship.

Introduction: The objective of this systematic review is to assess the effect of vibrational force on biomarkers for orthodontic tooth movement. Methods: An electronic search was conducted for relevant studies (up to December 31, 2020) on the following databases: Pubmed, Google scholar, Web of Science, Cochrane Library, Wiley Library, and ProQuest Dissertation Abstracts and Thesis database. Hand searching of selected orthodontic journals was also undertaken. The selected studies were assessed for the risk of bias in Cochrane collaboration risk of bias tool. The “traffic plot” and “weighted plot” risk of bias distribution are designed in the RoB 2 tool. The 2 authors extracted the data and analyzed it. Results: Six studies fulfilled the inclusion criteria. The risks of biases were high for 4, low and some concern for other 2 studies. The biomarkers, medium, device, frequency and duration of device, as well as other data were extracted. The outcomes of the studies were found to be heterogenous. Conclusion: One study showed highly statistically significant levels of IL-1 beta with <.001. Rate of tooth movement was correlated with levels of released biomarkers under the influence of vibrational force in 3 studies, but it was found to be significant only in 1 study. It was further observed that vibration does not have any significant reduction in pain and discomfort.

Exercise is widely recommended for people with Parkinson (PD). Boxing is a popular mode of training. However, including individuals with less favorable profiles may have a negative impact on participation. We performed a systematic review to study the patient characteristics that were included in boxing exercise programs research and reflect on the possible inclusion criteria that professionals can use for boxing exercise programs. Indications for the best profiles were limited due to the small number of studies. Boxing programs should include people with the diagnosis of PD in earlier stages, independently ambulatory, and without current severe musculoskeletal or cardiovascular conditions.
