The paper presents a triband circular polarized rectangular dielectric resonator antenna. A single coaxial cable feeds the DRA to a double stub strip on the DRA side. A patch strip coupled to the feed assists in widening the bandwidth of the proposed DRA. The degenerate mode pair TE∂11x and higher-TE∂23x has been excited to achieve CP and enhance the antenna gain. The higher-order mode has been excited using a low-cost simple excitation mechanism without compromising on the size and shape of the DRA. An impedance bandwidth of 48% with a gain ~6–9 dBic was achieved in all resonance frequencies. Additionally, the AR bandwidth of 5.5%, 4.2%, and 2.76% was obtained at three different frequencies. Note that the proposed DRA exhibits a wide beamwidth of 112o, which is good for better signal reception. A comparison between the measured with simulated results shows that the measured results are matched by the simulated result trends.

This paper presents the investigation on rectangular dielectric resonator antenna (RDRA) using three different feeding techniques that are microstrip slot aperture (MSA), microstrip line (ML) and open-end coplanar waveguide (OECPW). In order to increase the RDRA size and gain for 5G applications, the higher-order mode was used to excite the RDRA at the frequency resonant 28 GHz. Duroid dielectric substrate was used with a thickness of 0.254 mm, a permittivity of 2.2 and a loss tangent of 0.0009. Verification of the comparison was done by simulation using Ansoft HFSS. The simulated result for reflection coefficients, bandwidth, gain, radiation pattern and E-field strength was analyzed and compared.

The excitation of the higher-order mode, in rectangular dielectric resonator designed was explored to enhance the antenna gain and detailed elaboration is presented in this paper. The antenna was fed by a 50Ω microstrip line through an aperture cut in the ground plane. Besides avoiding spurious radiation, this feeding technique gives flexibility in controlling the amount of coupling in order to reduce the Q-factor in the higher-order mode RDRA. A design was developed and subsequently simulated using Ansoft HFSS ver 16.0 by utilizing Duroid 5880 dielectric substrate with a thickness (ts) of 0.254 mm, a permittivity (εs) of 2.2 and a loss tangent (δ) of 0.001 at 15 GHz. The higher-order mode, RDRA achieved the measured gain at 9.76 dBi and the measured impedance bandwidth as much 2.5 GHz which is 4.7% more compared to the fundamental mode. The result should be considered suitable for 5G applications.
