The optimisation of the design method for verification of slender steel beam-columns is still a current issue not only from scientific point of view, but also for design practice. Therefore, the main objective of this paper is comparison of the suitability of established design approaches, according to the European standards for steel and aluminium structures, on the basis of numerical simulations. Thus, a finite element model was validated on the basis of experimental analysis available in the scientific literature. To perform the comparison of accuracy of design approaches according to European standards, a commercial software program ANSYS was used for observation of the resistances of beam-columns. The resistance of european I beams with parallel flanges (IPE) and a rectangular hollow cross-section (RHS) were investigated for four load cases on a simply supported member and also on a pinned-fixed beam column with linear bending moment distribution, where the resistance of the cross-section governs. Finally, the conclusions for suitability of the respective design approaches are discussed, together with some findings that arose from this work.

The optimized-section precast slab (OPS) is a half precast concrete (PC) slab that highlights structural aesthetics while reducing the quantity of materials by means of an efficient cross-sectional configuration considering the distribution of a bending moment. However, since a tapered cross section where the locations of the top and bottom flanges change is formed at the end of the member, stress concentration occurs near the tapered cross section because of the shear force and thus the surrounding region of the tapered cross section may become unintentionally vulnerable. Therefore, in this study, experimental and numerical research was carried out to examine the shear behaviour characteristics and performance of the OPS with a tapered cross section. Shear tests were conducted on a total of eight OPS specimens, with the inclination angle of the tapered cross section, the presence of topping concrete and the amount of shear reinforcement as the main test variables and a reasonable shear-design method for the OPS members was proposed by means of a detailed analysis based on design code and finite-element analysis.

Abstract The steel lazy wave riser has been used in deep-water oil and gas field development because it has good adaption to the movement of the upper platform and economic efficiency. The typical design criterion and design flow of steel lazy wave riser are introduced in this paper. The design method and the equivalence principle of distributed buoyancy modules are given. The formulas of equivalent hydrodynamic parameters are derived in this paper. The influences of distributed buoyancy modules (DBM) and the buoyancy factor on the configuration of the riser, the top tension, and the bending moment distribution are discussed and summarized. The distribution law of effective stress response along the pipe can be analyzed by dynamic analysis, and it provides reference for the global design of steel lazy wave riser.

Mechanical analysis of flexible pipe during installation is presented in this paper. The configuration, tension and bending moment of the flexible are important issues during the installation. A reasonable theoretical model is proposed to handle the pipe configuration and the loads during installation. Numerical iteration program for the model is developed to get the tension, bending moment distribution and the pipe configuration. Two segments which are suspended segment and seabed segment are analyzed with different calculation model for their different load conditions and boundary conditions. Finite element model is established by Abaqus to verify the results from the theoretical model. The results from theoretical are very close to the ones got from FEM. Typical installation method J-lay method is applied to perform the FEM and numerical analysis.

A large number of bridges in Ukraine have been built in the 60–70 s (about 54 % of the total number). In that regard, the number of cases of detecting various types of damage on the elements of bridge structures is increasing, which can cause emergencies in the future. It also suggests that most of the bridges and overpasses were built according to the old technical standards and now do not meet the modern standards of DBN V.2.3-14: 2006 and DBN V.2.3-22: 2009, both in terms of carrying capacity and dimensions of the roadway. Therefore, the issues of strengthening the existing spans are relevant. Goal. The work analyzes the effect of reinforcement of diaphragm spans on their spatial work in order to determine the effectiveness of reinforcement by gluing additional rigid reinforcement and installing transverse metal beams. The tasks that have been solved in the work are as follows: creating an adequate finite element model of the diaphragm span; limiting the number of options for design schemes to the optimal number; construction and analysis of the graphs of bending moments and deflections in the cross-section in the middle of the span of beams. Results. The graphs of the distribution of bending moments in the beams of the superstructure for different dimensions show that the presence of reinforcement does not affect the value of the bending moment, and the distribution of forces between the beams of the superstructure becomes less uniform with an increase in their number. The deflections for all load cases and dimensions are greater than the deflections of beams with reinforcement; however, the installation of an additional transverse metal beam does not affect the values and distribution of deflections. Beam deflection graphs become less uniform with an increase in their number. Practical value. Analysis of the effect of reinforcement on the spatial work of span structures has shown that only reinforcement of beams with longitudinal rigid reinforcement without installing transverse beams is expedient in practice.

AbstractVerification of beam-column resistance can be accomplished according to design approaches given in EN 1993-1-1 [1]. These approaches are derived from verification of single span beam with pinned end conditions subjected to compression and bending moments. In the case of different end conditions, the application of those approaches is not so accurate and more difficult. Therefore, the comparison of verification according to above standard EN 1993-1-1 [1] as well as EN 1999-1-1 [2] to results of experimental analyses of beam-columns having pinned-fixed end conditions subjected to an eccentric compressive force simulating the behaviour of columns integrated into frames is presented in this paper.

Authors of article analysed influence of variability of yield strength over cross-section of hot rolled steel member to its load-carrying capacity. In calculation models, the yield strength is usually taken as constant. But yield strength of a steel hot-rolled beam is generally a random quantity. Not only the whole beam but also its parts have slightly different material characteristics. According to the results of more accurate measurements, the statistical characteristics of the material taken from various cross-section points (e.g. from a web and a flange) are, however, more or less different. This variation is described by one dimensional random field. The load-carrying capacity of the beam IPE300 under bending moment at its ends with the lateral buckling influence included is analysed, nondimensional slenderness according to EC3 is λ¯ = 0.6. For this relatively low slender beam the influence of the yield strength on the load-carrying capacity is large. Also the influence of all the other imperfections as accurately as possible, the load-carrying capacity was determined by geometrically and materially nonlinear solution of very accurate FEM model by the ANSYS programme.

Abstract A two-dimensional Galerkin finite element model for flow and contaminant transport in variably saturated porous media is used to analyze the transport of chlorides from a sanitary landfill located in Southern Ontario. A representative cross-section is selected for the analysis. Predicted chloride concentrations are presented for the cross section at various horizon years.

The Austrian government is extremely sceptical about the accession negotiations which are conducted by the European Commission on behalf of the European Union with Turkey and calls for the negotiation process to end. Serious reservations of Vienna have been raised by the current political situation in Turkey under the rule of President Recep Tayyip Erdogan, as well as by the standards of democracy in Turkey, which differ greatly from European standards. Serious deficiencies in rule of law, freedom of speech and independence of the judiciary, confirmed in the latest European Commission report on Turkey, do not justify, from Vienna’s point of view, the continuation of talks with Ankara on EU membership. In fact, Austria’s scepticism about the European perspective for Turkey has a longer tradition. This was marked previously in 2005 when the accession negotiations began. Until now, Austria’s position has not had enough clout within the European arena. Pragmatic cooperation with Turkey as a strategic partner of the EU, both in the context of the migration crisis and security policy, proved to be a key factor. The question is whether Austria, which took over the EU presidency from 1.7.2018, will be able to more strongly accentuate its reservations about Turkey and even build an alliance of Member States strong enough to block Turkey’s accession process.
