An autonomous robot osteotomy using direct coordinate determination for registering was developed, and the accuracy of the designed osteotomy along the preprogrammed plan was evaluated. Furthermore, the accuracy of the robotic and manual osteotomy was compared in regard to cut position, length, angle and depth. A light-weight robot was used in this study, with an electric gripper. Twenty stone models were used to evaluate accuracy of osteotomy and sixteen mandible phantoms were used to simulate the ramal bone harvest osteotomy for comparison between robotic and manual surgery. In the stone model experiment, the absolute mean values for osteotomy errors for position, length, angle, and depth were 0.93 ± 0.45 mm, 0.81 ± 0.34 mm, 1.26 ± 1.35°, and 1.19 ± 0.73 mm, respectively. In the mandible phantom model experiment, the robotic surgery showed lower errors for position, length and angle (0.70 ± 0.34 mm, 0.35 ± 0.19 mm and 1.32 ± 0.96°) and somewhat higher errors for depth (0.59 ± 0.46 mm) than manual surgery (1.83 ± 0.65 mm, 0.62 ± 0.37 mm, 5.96 ± 3.47° and 0.40 ± 0.31 mm). This study may provide a basis for developing clinical application of an autonomous robot osteotomy.

Conventionally, the strength of toe plantar flexion (STPF) is measured in a seated position, in which not only the target toe joints but also the knee and particularly ankle joints, are usually restrained. We have developed an approach for the measurement of STPF which does not involve restraint and considers the interactions of adjacent joints of the lower extremities. This study aimed to evaluate this new approach and comparing with the seated approach. A thin, light-weight, rigid plate was attached to the sole of the foot in order to immobilize the toe area. Participants were 13 healthy young women (mean age: 24 ± 4 years). For measurement of STPF with the new approach, participants were instructed to stand, raise the device-wearing leg slightly, plantar flex the ankle, and push the sensor sheet with the toes to exert STPF. The sensor sheet of the F-scan II system was inserted between the foot sole and the plate. For measurement with the seated approach, participants were instructed to sit and push the sensor with the toes. They were required to maintain the hip, knee, and ankle joints at 90°. The mean values of maximum STPF of the 13 participants obtained with each approach were compared. There was no significant difference in mean value of maximum STPF when the two approaches were compared (new: 59 ± 23 N, seated: 47 ± 33 N). The coefficient of variation of maximum STPF was smaller for data obtained with the new approach (new: 39%, seated: 70%). Our simple approach enables measurement of STPF without the need for the restraints that are required for the conventional seated approach. These results suggest that the new approach is a valid method for measurement of STPF.

A special-purpose robot for prostatectomies has been developed. Details of the robot mechanism, control system and human/computer interface (HCI) are discussed with special emphasis on software methods to ensure system safety. The clinical application of the system is described and software requirements for operating-theatre use are indicated. These requirements include safe error recovery, facilitation of reliable surgical procedures, and an effective HCI.

Abstract Much is known about the fact that thyrotrophin-releasing hormone (TRH) and vasoactive intestinal peptide (VIP) stimulate prolactin secretion but areas of uncertainty remain. This work was undertaken to describe the effects of TRH and VIP on the pulsatile secretion pattern of prolactin, in adult sham-operated and pituitary-grafted hyperprolactinaemic female rats. Two pulses of TRH (1 μg/rat) or one pulse of VIP (20 μg/rat) were given 60 or 120 min after the period of blood sampling. Pituitary grafting increased the mean values of prolactin, absolute amplitude and duration of the peaks and decreased their frequency, compared with control animals. In sham-operated rats, TRH elevated prolactin levels by increasing the absolute and relative amplitudes and duration of the pulses, along with a decrease in their frequency. No priming effects of TRH were observed in this study. Hyperprolactinaemia blunted TRH effects on the pulsatile secretion pattern of prolactin. In sham-operated rats, VIP administration increased the absolute and relative amplitudes of the prolactin peaks. None of the other parameters studied were changed. In pituitary-grafted animals, VIP administration increased the absolute and relative amplitudes of the prolactin peaks but to a lesser extent compared with controls. These data suggest that TRH and VIP affect prolactin pulsatility differentially. Abstract. The retrieval strategies for deriving the atmospheric total columns (TCs) of CFC-11 (CCl3F), CFC-12 (CCl2F2), and HCFC-22 (CHClF2) from ground–based measurements of IR solar radiation have been improved. We demonstrate the advantage of using the Tikhonov-Phillips regularization approach for solving the inverse problem of the retrieval of these gases and give the optimized values of regularization parameters. The estimates of relative systematic and random errors amount to 7.61 % and 3.08 %, 2.24 % and 2.40 %, 5.75 % and 3.70 %, for CFC-11, CFC-12, and HCFC-22, respectively. We analyze the time series of the TCs and mean molar fractions (MMFs) of CFC-11, CFC-12, and HCFC-22 measured at the NDACC site St. Petersburg located near Saint Petersburg, Russia for the period of 2009–2019. Mean values of the MMFs for CFC-11, CFC-12, and HCFC-22 total 225, 493, and 238 pptv, respectively. Estimates of the MMFs trends for CFC-11, CFC-12, and HCFC-22 account for −0.40 ± 0.07 %/yr, -0.49  ±0.05 %/yr, and 2.12±0.13 %/yr, respectively. We have compared the mean values, trends and seasonal variability of CFC-11, CFC-12, and HCFC-22 MMFs measured at the St. Petersburg site in 2009–2019 to that of 1) near–ground volume mixing ratios (VMRs) measured at the observational site Mace Head, Ireland (GVMR); 2) the mean in the 8–12 km layer VMRs measured by ACE–FTS and averaged over 55–65° N latitudes (SVMR); and the MMFs of the Whole Atmosphere Community Climate Model for the St. Petersburg site (WMMF). The means of the MMFs are less than that of the GVMR for CFC-11 by 9 pptv (3.8 %), for CFC-12 by 24 pptv (4.6 %); for HCFC-22, the mean MMFs does not differ significantly from the mean GVMR. The absolute value of the trend estimates of the MMFs is less than that of the GVMR for CFC-11 (−0.40 vs −0.53 %/yr) and CFC-12 (−0.49 vs −0.59 %yr); the trend estimate of the HCFC-22 MMFs does not differ significantly from that of the GVMR. The seasonal variability of the GVMR for all three gases is much lower than the MMFs variability. The means of the MMFs are less than that of the SVMR for CFC-11 by 10 pptv (4.3 %), for CFC-12 by 33 pptv (6.3 %), and for HCFC-22 by 2 pptv (0.8 %). The absolute value of the trend estimates of the MMFs is less than that of the SVMR for CFC-11 (−0.40 vs −0.63 %/yr) and CFC-12 (−0.49 vs −0.58 %/yr); the trend estimate of the HCFC-22 MMFs does not differ significantly from that of the SVMR. The MMF and SVMR values show nearly the same qualitative and quantitative seasonal variability for all three gases. The means of the MMFs are greater than that of the WMMF for CFC-11 by 22 pptv (10 %), for CFC-12 by 15 pptv (3.1 %), and for HCFC-22 by 23 pptv (10 %). The absolute value of the trend estimates of the MMFs is less than that of the WMMF for CFC-11 (−0.40 vs −1.68 %/yr), CFC-12 (−0.49 vs −0.84 %/yr), and HCFC-22 (2.12 %/yr vs 3.40 %/yr). The MMFs and WMMF values show nearly the same qualitative and quantitative seasonal variability for CFC-11 and CFC-12, whereas the seasonal variability of the WMMF for HCFC-22 is essentially less than that of the MMFs. In general, the comparison of the MMFs with the independent data shows a good agreement of their means within the systematic error of considered measurements. The observed trends over the St. Petersburg site demonstrate the smaller decrease rates for CFC-11 and CFC-12 TCs than that of the independent data, and the same decrease rate for HCFC-22. The suggested retrieval strategies can be used for analysis of the IR solar spectra measurements using Bruker FS125HR spectrometers, e.g. at other IRWG sites of the NDACC observational network.

ABSTRACT Prolactin secretion throughout the oestrous cycle in the rat remains at a low level and fairly constant, with the exception of the surge at pro-oestrus. The present study was designed to characterize possible changes in pulsatile patterns of prolactin during the oestrous cycle of the adult female rat. Mean values of prolactin increased from dioestrus-2 to pro-oestrus and then decreased to the values found at dioestrus-1. The number of peaks remained fairly constant in any phase of the oestrous cycle. The absolute amplitude of the peaks increased numerically but was not statistically significant from dioestrus-2 to pro-oestrus then decreasing until dioestrus-1. No changes in the relative amplitude or duration of the peaks throughout the oestrous cycle were detected. The results indicated that there is a similar pulsatile pattern of prolactin at any stage of the oestrous cycle, when samples were obtained during the morning. The long-term effects of isradipine on peripheral occlusive vascular disease of the lower limbs were investigated in 23 normotensive patients with stable Fontaine stage IIa disease and with an absolute pain-free interval (treadmill speed 4 km/h, no incline) of 300 – 700 m, and Doppler ankle – arm arterial pressure index of less than 0.80 in at least one leg. Using a double-blind, parallel-group design, patients received either 2.5 mg isradipine twice daily or placebo for 12 months. Both isradipine ( n = 11) and placebo ( n = 12) increased the absolute pain-free interval mean values; the increases were not significantly different. Similar trends were observed in the mean values for relative pain-free interval and ankle – arm arterial pressure index. In a subgroup of patients with a baseline absolute pain-free interval of greater than 500 m, isradipine ( n = 6) significantly ( P < 0.001) increased both the absolute and the relative pain-free intervals and increased the ankle – arm arterial pressure index compared with placebo ( n = 7). The favourable effects of long-term isradipine treatment suggest that isradipine could positively interfere with factors involved in the progression of atherosclerotic lesions or improve collateral vessel flow. Gli effetti a lungo termine dell'isradipina sulla arteriopatia vascolare periferica agli arti inferiori sono stati studiati in 23 pazienti normotesi affetti da “claudicatio intermittens” allo stadio IIa di Fontaine e con un intervallo libero assoluto (velocita al treadmil 4 km/h, senza inclinazione) di 300 – 700 m e di un indice pressorio valutato con metodica Doppler fra caviglia e braccio minore di 0.80 in almeno una delle gambe. Secondo uno studio in doppio cieco ed a gruppi paralleli ai pazienti sono stati somministrati 2.5 mg due volte al giorno di isradipina o del corrispondente placebo per una durata di 12 mesi. Sia l'isradipina ( n = 11) sia il placebo ( n = 12) hanno innalzato i valori medi dell'intervallo libero assoluto e gli aumenti non si sono dimostrati statisticamente differenti Un trend simile si è osservato anche per i valori medi dell'intervallo libero relativo e dell'indice caviglia/braccio. In un sottogruppo di pazienti aventi un intervallo libero assoluto al basale maggiore di 500 m, l'isradipina ( n = 6) ha innalzato significativamente ( P < 0.001) sia l'intervallo libero assoluto sia quello relativo ed ha aumentato anche l'indice pressorio caviglia braccio nei confronti del placebo ( n = 7). Gli effetti benefici di un trattamento a lungo termine con l'isradipina suggeriscono che questo farmaco può interferire in modo positivo con i fattori che favoriscono il progredire delle lesioni aterosclerotiche, e/o il migliorare il flusso ematico a livello del circolo collaterale.

AbstractPreventing biofilm-related risks such as gingivitis and white spot lesions during orthodontic treatments is very challenging. The cleaning efficiencies of AirFloss Ultra and I-Prox P sulcus brushes were evaluated using an orthodontic phantom model. After attaching brackets onto black-coated maxillary KaVo teeth, a plaque substitute was applied. The evaluated tooth surfaces were divided into two areas. Cleaning was performed with an AirFloss Ultra with two (A-2) or four (A-4) sprays or an I-Prox P for two (I-2) or four (I-4) seconds. Images before and after cleaning were digitally subtracted, and the percentage of fully cleaned surfaces was determined (Adobe Photoshop CS5, ImageJ). Statistical analysis was performed by ANOVA and post hoc tests with Bonferroni correction (SPSS 25, p < 0.05). The mean values of total cleaning efficacy were 26.87% for I-2, 43.73% for I-4, 34.93%, for A-2 and 56.78% for A-4. The efficacy was significantly higher for A-4 than for A-2, I-4, and I-2. There were significant differences between the four groups. Repeated cleaning led to an improved result. Within the study limitations, the AirFloss Ultra with four sprays proved to be more efficient than the sulcus brush I-Prox P for cleaning.

Five cultivars and four rootstocks (Gisela 5, P-HL-A, P-HL-B, and Tabel Edabriz) were evaluated on trees in fruiting stage trained like spindle and on trellis. Tree vigour was significantly related to cultivar, rootstock and to tree training. Spindles were generally more vigorous than trees on trellis with exception of cv. Kordia. In several cases special combinations of cultivar, rootstock, and method of tree training differed significantly from mean effects of the three factors. Time of flowering was significantly dependent on the cultivar and varied annually within 15 days. Time of fruit harvest was also influenced by the rootstock and in two cases mutually contradictory to the tree training method. Yields per tree were generally dependent on the cultivar. With Burlat and cv. Kordia rootstock and tree training were also important. Higher specific yields were recorded on trellis-trained trees. Remarkable in this respect were Vanda and trees of Summit on P-HL-B and Starking Hardy Giant on Tabel Edabriz. Higher specific yields on spindle had Kordia on P-HL-A and Tabel Edabriz and Burlat on P-HL-A. Mean values of annual yields per hectare in spindle ranged between 10.0 to 17.5 t whereas in trellis between 6.7 to 12.3 t. The absolute highest annual yield (35.7 t) was recorded on spindle trees of Kordia on P-HL-A. In trellis the highest yield of 27.1 t had Kordia on Gisela 5. The advantage of spindle over trellis was greater in Burlat and Kordia but much lower in cv. Vanda. Fruit size mainly depended on the year. Only two rootstocks influenced fruit size differently in some years. Training system had no effect on fruit size.
