Deep and meaningful learning (DML) in distant education should be an essential outcome of quality education. In this literature review, we focus on e-learning effectiveness along with the factors and conditions leading to DML when using social virtual reality environments (SVREs) in distance mode higher education (HE). Hence, a systematic literature review was conducted summarizing the findings from thirty-three empirical studies in HE between 2004 (appearance of VR) and 2019 (before coronavirus appearance). We searched for the cognitive, social, and affective aspects of DML in a research framework and studied their weight in SVREs. The findings suggest that the use of SVREs can provide authentic, simulated, cognitively challenging experiences in engaging, motivating environments for open-ended social and collaborative interactions and intentional, personalized learning. Furthermore, the findings indicate that educators and SVRE designers need to place more emphasis on the socio-cultural semiotics and emotional aspects of e-learning and ethical issues such as privacy and security. The mediating factors for DML in SVREs were accumulated and classified in the resultant Blended Model for Deep and Meaningful e-learning in SVREs. Improvement recommendations include meaningful contexts, purposeful activation, learner agency, intrinsic emotional engagement, holistic social integration, and meticulous user obstacle removal.

Ethics is a prominent topic in learning analytics that has been commented on from conceptual viewpoints. For a broad range of emerging technologies, systematic literature reviews have proven fruitful by pinpointing research directions, knowledge gaps, and future research work guidance. With these outcomes in mind, we conducted a systematic literature review of the research on ethical issues that have been empirically approached in the learning analytics literature. In our final analysis, 21 articles published in the period 2014–2019 met our inclusion criteria. By analyzing this data, we seek to contribute to the field of learning analytics by 1) characterizing the type of empirical research that has been conducted on ethics in learning analytics in the context of higher education, 2) identifying the main ethical areas addressed in the selected literature, and 3) pinpointing knowledge gaps.

According to international research and institutions, the Higher Education sector needs to deeply innovate his didactic methodologies. In this sense, the integration and use of ICTs have been seen as a possible driver for the improvement of education’ quality, and showed good affordances for teaching and learning in terms of engagement, communication and collaboration. New emerging technologies are now under experimentation, especially as for immersive environments from augmented to virtual reality. In this paper we will focus on 360-degree video, offering a first overview of its potential in educational contexts, as they emerge from a systematic literature review.

The aim of this article was to provide evidence pertaining to cloud computing (CC) adoption in education, namely higher education institutions (HEIs) or Universities. A systematic literature review (SLR) of empirical studies exploring the current CC adoption levels in HEIs and the benefits and challenges for using CC in HEIs was performed. A total of 20 papers were included in the SLR. It was discovered that a number of universities have a keen interest in using CC in their institution, and the evidence indicates a high level of successful CC adoption in the HEIs reviewed in the SLR. In conclusion, the SLR identified a clear literature gap in this research area: there exists limited empirical studies focusing on CC utilisation in HEIs.

Virtual Reality (VR) is one of the most popular contemporary technologies and it is widely used in the videogame industry, nonetheless, this does not restrict its use in other areas of science, such as medicine or education. Due to the large commotion caused by the appearance of Covid-19, long distance virtual education technologies (e-learning) are being used. With this context, virtual reality is the focus of this study, which had the objective of understanding the work done in superior education at a distance, through the use of VR, by doing a systematic literature review (SLR; LSR in Spanish). The results reveal that the use of VR in education can improve the experience, motivation and the comprehension of abstract concepts for the students, offering them an immersive environment in which they can interact and achieve effective learning. It was concluded that the works that were reviewed regarding the topic evidence a strong growth in the application of VR in education, which in their majority, employ experimental comparative methods between groups of students which use VR when compared to others who use the traditional method.
