The thermomechanical coupling constitutive model of concrete is a critical subject for the theoretical investigation and numerical simulation of the mechanical behaviors of concrete members and structures at high temperature. This paper presents a thermomechanical coupling constitutive model for the description of the mechanical behaviors of concrete at different temperatures. The expression of the elastic strain increment is derived with the free energy function including the temperature variable. The expression of the plastic strain increment is derived from the yield function based on the Drucker–Prager strength criterion. The elastoplastic damage effect is included in this constitutive model. The damage variable is included in the yield function to consider the effect of the damage on the elastoplastic mechanical behaviors of concrete. The proposed constitutive model is validated by the comparison of the simulation results of the uniaxial compression tests of concrete at different temperatures with the corresponding test results. The simulation results accord well with the test results at different temperatures. This indicates that the proposed constitutive model can characterize the mechanical behaviors of concrete at different temperatures with considerable accuracy. The proposed constitutive model was applied to simulate an axially compressive concrete column. The simulation results are consistent with the essential mechanical response behaviors of concrete members at different temperatures.

Material properties affect the surface finishing in ultra-precision diamond cutting (UPDC), especially for aluminum alloy 6061 (Al6061) in which the cutting-induced temperature rise generates different types of precipitates on the machined surface. The precipitates generation not only changes the material properties but also induces imperfections on the generated surface, therefore increasing surface roughness for Al6061 in UPDC. To investigate precipitate effect so as to make a more precise control for the surface quality of the diamond turned Al6061, it is necessary to confirm the compositions and material properties of the precipitates. Previous studies have indicated that the major precipitate that induces scratch marks on the diamond turned Al6061 is an AlFeSi phase with the composition of Al86.1Fe8.3Si5.6. Therefore, in this paper, to study the material properties of the AlFeSi phase and its influences on ultra-precision machining of Al6061, an elastoplastic-damage model is proposed to build an elastoplastic constitutive model and a damage failure constitutive model of Al86.1Fe8.3Si5.6. By integrating finite element (FE) simulation and JMatPro, an efficient method is proposed to confirm the physical and thermophysical properties, temperature-phase transition characteristics, as well as the stress–strain curves of Al86.1Fe8.3Si5.6. Based on the developed elastoplastic-damage parameters of Al86.1Fe8.3Si5.6, FE simulations of the scratch test for Al86.1Fe8.3Si5.6 are conducted to verify the developed elastoplastic-damage model. Al86.1Fe8.3Si5.6 is prepared and scratch test experiments are carried out to compare with the simulation results, which indicated that, the simulation results agree well with those from scratch tests and the deviation of the scratch force in X-axis direction is less than 6.5%.

A discrete element method (DEM) has widely been used to simulate asphalt mixture characteristics, and DEM models can consider the effect of aggregate gradation and interaction between particles. However, proper selection of model parameters is crucial to obtain convincing results from DEM-based simulations. This paper presents a method to appropriately determine the mechanical parameters to be used in DEM-based simulation of asphalt concrete mixture. Splitting test specimens are prepared by using asphalt mixture, and the splitting test results are compared with simulation results from two-dimensional (2D) DEM and three-dimensional (3D) DEM. Basing on the DEM results, the effects of contact model parameters on the simulation results are analyzed. The slope of the load-displacement curve at the beginning stage is mainly affected by the stiffness parameters, and the peak load is mainly determined by using the value of the bond strength. The laboratory splitting test of AC-20 and AC-13 specimens were performed at different temperatures, namely, −10°C, 0°C, 10°C, and 20°C, and the load-displacement relationships were plotted. According to the real load-displacement curve’s slope at the beginning stage and peak load applied, the range of DEM bond model parameters is determined. On the basis of DEM results of the splitting test, the relationships between simulation load-displacement curve’s characteristics and bond model parameters are fitted. The values of the parameters of the DEM contact bond model at different temperatures are obtained depending on the actual load-displacement curve’s initial slope and peak load. Lastly the DEM and laboratory test results are compared, which illustrates that the parallel bond model can well simulate the behavior of asphalt mixture.

Shanghai Pudong Shangrila Hotel extension project is a super-high frame-shear wall structure. In this paper, a concrete uniaxial hysteresis constitutive model and a practical elastic plastic damage constitutive model are introduced, both of which are established by the author before, and then both models are developed in ABAQUS via UMAT, and used to simulate Shanghai Pudong Shangrila hotel extension engineering. The numerical model is established in PKPM and then be converted to ABAQUS, in which fiber model is used to simulate the frame elements and sell model is used to simulate shear-walls. Through numerical simulation, we can see that the simulation results and test results are coincided well, which proved that the proposed constitutive models is effective in analyzing large complex structures, and the selected element models are reasonable.

Basic mechanical behaviors of rocks at different temperatures and with different moistures are required to be investigated for studying and designing rock engineering in cold regions. In this paper, two typical rocks, i.e., red sandstone and shale sampled from Jiangxi and Hubei in China, respectively, are tested by uniaxial and triaxial compressive tests at different temperatures ranging from 20°C to -20°C and in dry and fully saturated states. The test results show the different behaviors of them. The values of the uniaxial and triaxial compressive strengths, Young’s modulus, cohesion, and friction angle, increase with the lowering of the testing temperatures, but the tendencies are different for these two kinds of rock.

Concrete splitting failure due to tension load can occur when fastening systems are located close to an edge or corner of a concrete member, especially in thin members. This failure mode has not been extensively investigated for anchor channels. Given the current trend in the construction industry towards more slender concrete members, this failure mode will become more and more relevant. In addition, significantly different design rules in the United States and Europe indicate the need for harmonization between codes. Therefore, an extensive numerical parametric study was carried out to evaluate the influence of member thickness, edge distance, and anchor spacing on the capacity of anchor channels in uncracked and unreinforced concrete members. One of the main findings was that the characteristic edge distance depends on the member thickness and can be larger than 3hef (hef = embedment depth) for thin members. Based on the numerical and experimental test results, modifications of the design recommendations for the splitting failure mode are proposed. Overall, the authors recommend performing the splitting verification separately from the concrete breakout to design anchor channels in thin members more accurately.

The Equivalent Turn Number of Coil (ETNC) is proposed for induction coil design. Simulation results show that the vibrationonthe induction coil’s structure. The optimized coil is composed by two symmetry parts on the condition of sinusoidal vibration. The effective value of output EMF of optimized coil increases 51.39% than uniform coil’s. In the experiment, the optimized and uniform coils are fabricated with 600 turns and comparatively studied in the same vibration-to-electrical generator. The test results show that the peak-to-peak value and effective value of output EMF of the optimized coil can increase up to 52.59% and 48.76%, respectively, compared with the uniform coil.

The wear-ring abrasion can cause performance degradation of the marine centrifugal pump. In order to study the effect of front and back wear-ring clearance on a pump, test and numerical simulation were used to investigate the performance change of a pump. The test results show that the head and efficiency of pump decrease by 3.56% and 9.62% respectively at 1.0 Qd due to the wear-ring abrasion. Under 1.0 Qd, with the increase of the front wear-ring the vibration velocity at pump foot increases from 0.4 mm/s to 1.0 mm/s. The axis passing frequency (APF) at the measuring points increases significantly and there appears new characteristic frequency of 3APF and 4APF. The numerical simulation results show that the front wear-ring abrasion affects the flow at the inlet of the front chamber of the pump and impeller passage. And the back wear-ring abrasion has obvious effect on the flow in the back chamber of the pump and impeller passage, while the multi-malfunction of the front wear-ring abrasion and back wear-ring abrasion has the most obvious effect on the flow velocity and flow stability inside pump. The pressure pulsation at Blade Passing Frequency (BPF) of the three schemes all decrease with the increase of the clearance.

Abstract Uncured rubber possesses remarkable hyperelastic and viscoelastic properties while it undergoes large deformation; therefore, it has wide application prospects and attracts great research interests from academia and industry. In this paper, a nonlinear constitutive model with two parallel networks is developed to describe the mechanical response of uncured rubber. The constitutive model is incorporated with the Eying model to describe the hysteresis phenomenon and viscous flow criterion, and the hyperelastic properties under large deformation are captured by a non-Gaussian chain molecular network model. Based on the model, the mechanical behaviors of hyperelasticity, viscoelasticity and hysteresis under different strain rates are investigated. Furthermore, the constitutive model is employed to estimate uniaxial tensile, cyclic loading–unloading and multistep tensile relaxation mechanical behaviors of uncured rubber, and the prediction results show good agreement with the test data. The nonlinear mechanical constitutive model provides an efficient method for predicting the mechanical response of uncured rubber materials.

The mechanical behavior of plastic material is dramatically sensitive to temperature. An method is proposed to predict the mechanical behavior of plastics for cars, ranging from low-temperature low temperature ≤-40°C to high temperature ≥80°C. It dominates the behavior of plastic material based on improved constitutive model in which the parameters adjusted by a series of tests under different temperatures. The method is validated with test and establishes the basis for research and development of plastic parts for automobile as well.

Abstract The rock materials surrounding the underground excavations typically demonstrate nonlinear mechanical response and irreversible behavior in particular under high in-situ stress states. The dominant causes of irreversible behavior are plastic flow and damage process. The plastic flow is controlled by the presence of local shear stresses which cause the frictional sliding. During this process, the net number of bonds remains unchanged practically. The overall macroscopic consequence of plastic flow is that the elastic properties (e.g. the stiffness of the material) are insensitive to this type of irreversible change. The main cause of irreversible changes in quasi-brittle materials such as rock is the damage process occurring within the material. From a microscopic viewpoint, damage initiates with the nucleation and growth of microcracks. When the microcracks length reaches a critical value, the coalescence of them occurs and finally, the localized meso-cracks appear. The macroscopic and phenomenological consequence of damage process is stiffness degradation, dilatation and softening response. In this paper, a coupled elastoplastic-logarithmic damage model was used to simulate the irreversible deformations and stiffness degradation of rock materials under loading. In this model, damage evolution & plastic flow rules were formulated in the framework of irreversible thermodynamics principles. To take into account the stiffness degradation and softening on post-peak region, logarithmic damage variable was implemented. Also, a plastic model with Drucker-Prager yield function was used to model plastic strains. Then, an algorithm was proposed to calculate the numerical steps based on the proposed coupled plastic and damage constitutive model. The developed model has been programmed in VC++ environment. Then, it was used as a separate and new constitutive model in DEM code (UDEC). Finally, the experimental Oolitic limestone rock behavior was simulated based on the developed model. The irreversible strains, softening and stiffness degradation were reproduced in the numerical results. Furthermore, the confinement pressure dependency of rock behavior was simulated in according to experimental observations.
