The miniaturization and high integration of electronic products have higher and higher requirements for welding of internal components of electronic products. A welding quality detection method has always been one of the important research contents in the industry, among which, the research on solder joint defect detection of a connector has gradually attracted people’s attention with the development of image detection algorithm. The traditional solder joint detection method of connector adopts manual detection or automatic detection methods, which is inefficient and not safe enough. With the development of deep learning, the application of a deep convolutional neural network to target detection has become a research hotspot. In this paper, a data set of connector solder joint samples was made and the number of image samples was expanded to more than 3 times of the original by using data augmentation. Clustering generates anchor boxes and transfer learning with ResNet-101 were fused, so an improved faster region-based convolutional neural networks (Faster RCNN) algorithm was proposed. The experiment verified that the improved algorithm proposed in this paper had a great improvement in all aspects compared with the original algorithm. The average detection accuracy of this method can reach 94%, and the detection rate of some defects can even reach 100%, which can completely meet the industrial requirements.

In recent years, more and more scholars devoted themselves to the research of the target detection algorithm due to the continuous development of deep learning. Among them, the detection and recognition of small and complex targets are still a problem to be solved. The authors of this article have understood the shortcomings of the deep learning detection algorithm in detecting small and complex defect targets and would like to share a new improved target detection algorithm in steel surface defect detection. The steel surface defects will affect the quality of steel seriously. We find that most of the current detection algorithms for NEU-DET dataset detection accuracy are low, so we choose to verify a steel surface defect detection algorithm based on machine vision on this dataset for the problem of defect detection in steel production. A series of improvement measures are carried out in the traditional Faster R-CNN algorithm, such as reconstructing the network structure of Faster R-CNN. Based on the small features of the target, we train the network with multiscale fusion. For the complex features of the target, we replace part of the conventional convolution network with a deformable convolution network. The experimental results show that the deep learning network model trained by the proposed method has good detection performance, and the mean average precision is 0.752, which is 0.128 higher than the original algorithm. Among them, the average precision of crazing, inclusion, patches, pitted surface, rolled in scale and scratches is 0.501, 0.791, 0.792, 0.874, 0.649, and 0.905, respectively. The detection method is able to identify small target defects on the steel surface effectively, which can provide a reference for the automatic detection of steel defects.

The reliability of the insulator has directly affected the stable operation of electric power system. The detection of defective insulators has always been an important issue in smart grid systems. However, the traditional transmission line detection method has low accuracy and poor real-time performance. We present an insulator defect detection method based on CenterNet. In order to improve detection efficiency, we simplified the backbone network. In addition, an attention mechanism is utilized to suppress useless information and improve the accuracy of network detection. In image preprocessing, the blurring of some detected images results in the samples being discarded, so we use super-resolution reconstruction algorithm to reconstruct the blurred images to enhance the dataset. The results show that the AP of the proposed method reaches 96.16% and the reasoning speed reaches 30FPS under the test condition of NVIDIA GTX 1080 test conditions. Compared with Faster R-CNN, YOLOV3, RetinaNet and FSAF, the detection accuracy of proposed method is greatly improved, which fully proves the effectiveness of the proposed method.

The defects of solar cell component (SCC) will affect the service life and power generation efficiency. In this paper, the defect images of SCC were taken by the photoluminescence (PL) method and processed by an advanced lightweight convolutional neural network (CNN). Firstly, in order to solve the high pixel SCC image detection, each silicon wafer image was segmented based on local difference extremum of edge projection (LDEEP). Secondly, in order to detect the defects with small size or weak edges in the silicon wafer, an improved lightweight CNN model with deep backbone feature extraction network structure was proposed, as the enhancing feature fusion layer and the three-scale feature prediction layer; the model provided more feature detail. The final experimental results showed that the improved model achieves a good balance between the detection accuracy and detection speed, with the mean average precision (mAP) reaching 87.55%, which was 6.78% higher than the original algorithm. Moreover, the detection speed reached 40 frames per second (fps), which meets requirements of precision and real-time detection. The detection method can better complete the defect detection task of SCC, which lays the foundation for automatic detection of SCC defects.

Using aerial cameras, satellite remote sensing or unmanned aerial vehicles (UAV) equipped with cameras can facilitate search and rescue tasks after disasters. The traditional manual interpretation of huge aerial images is inefficient and could be replaced by machine learning-based methods combined with image processing techniques. Given the development of machine learning, researchers find that convolutional neural networks can effectively extract features from images. Some target detection methods based on deep learning, such as the single-shot multibox detector (SSD) algorithm, can achieve better results than traditional methods. However, the impressive performance of machine learning-based methods results from the numerous labeled samples. Given the complexity of post-disaster scenarios, obtaining many samples in the aftermath of disasters is difficult. To address this issue, a damaged building assessment method using SSD with pretraining and data augmentation is proposed in the current study and highlights the following aspects. (1) Objects can be detected and classified into undamaged buildings, damaged buildings, and ruins. (2) A convolution auto-encoder (CAE) that consists of VGG16 is constructed and trained using unlabeled post-disaster images. As a transfer learning strategy, the weights of the SSD model are initialized using the weights of the CAE counterpart. (3) Data augmentation strategies, such as image mirroring, rotation, Gaussian blur, and Gaussian noise processing, are utilized to augment the training data set. As a case study, aerial images of Hurricane Sandy in 2012 were maximized to validate the proposed method’s effectiveness. Experiments show that the pretraining strategy can improve of 10% in terms of overall accuracy compared with the SSD trained from scratch. These experiments also demonstrate that using data augmentation strategies can improve mAP and mF1 by 72% and 20%, respectively. Finally, the experiment is further verified by another dataset of Hurricane Irma, and it is concluded that the paper method is feasible.

Synthetic Aperture Radar (SAR) has become one of the important technical means of marine monitoring in the field of remote sensing due to its all-day, all-weather advantage. National territorial waters to achieve ship monitoring is conducive to national maritime law enforcement, implementation of maritime traffic control, and maintenance of national maritime security, so ship detection has been a hot spot and focus of research. After the development from traditional detection methods to deep learning combined methods, most of the research always based on the evolving Graphics Processing Unit (GPU) computing power to propose more complex and computationally intensive strategies, while in the process of transplanting optical image detection ignored the low signal-to-noise ratio, low resolution, single-channel and other characteristics brought by the SAR image imaging principle. Constantly pursuing detection accuracy while ignoring the detection speed and the ultimate application of the algorithm, almost all algorithms rely on powerful clustered desktop GPUs, which cannot be implemented on the frontline of marine monitoring to cope with the changing realities. To address these issues, this paper proposes a multi-channel fusion SAR image processing method that makes full use of image information and the network’s ability to extract features; it is also based on the latest You Only Look Once version 4 (YOLO-V4) deep learning framework for modeling architecture and training models. The YOLO-V4-light network was tailored for real-time and implementation, significantly reducing the model size, detection time, number of computational parameters, and memory consumption, and refining the network for three-channel images to compensate for the loss of accuracy due to light-weighting. The test experiments were completed entirely on a portable computer and achieved an Average Precision (AP) of 90.37% on the SAR Ship Detection Dataset (SSDD), simplifying the model while ensuring a lead over most existing methods. The YOLO-V4-lightship detection algorithm proposed in this paper has great practical application in maritime safety monitoring and emergency rescue.

Defect detection of electromagnetic luminescence (EL) cells is the core step in the production and preparation of solar cell modules to ensure conversion efficiency and long service life of batteries. However, due to the lack of feature extraction capability for small feature defects, the traditional single shot multibox detector (SSD) algorithm performs not well in EL defect detection with high accuracy. Consequently, an improved SSD algorithm with modification in feature fusion in the framework of deep learning is proposed to improve the recognition rate of EL multi-class defects. A dataset containing images with four different types of defects through rotation, denoising, and binarization is established for the EL. The proposed algorithm can greatly improve the detection accuracy of the small-scale defect with the idea of feature pyramid networks. An experimental study on the detection of the EL defects shows the effectiveness of the proposed algorithm. Moreover, a comparison study shows the proposed method outperforms other traditional detection methods, such as the SIFT, Faster R-CNN, and YOLOv3, in detecting the EL defect.

Security attacks on legitimate websites to steal users’ information, known as phishing attacks, have been increasing. This kind of attack does not just affect individuals’ or organisations’ websites. Although several detection methods for phishing websites have been proposed using machine learning, deep learning, and other approaches, their detection accuracy still needs to be enhanced. This paper proposes an optimized stacking ensemble method for phishing website detection. The optimisation was carried out using a genetic algorithm (GA) to tune the parameters of several ensemble machine learning methods, including random forests, AdaBoost, XGBoost, Bagging, GradientBoost, and LightGBM. The optimized classifiers were then ranked, and the best three models were chosen as base classifiers of a stacking ensemble method. The experiments were conducted on three phishing website datasets that consisted of both phishing websites and legitimate websites—the Phishing Websites Data Set from UCI (Dataset 1); Phishing Dataset for Machine Learning from Mendeley (Dataset 2, and Datasets for Phishing Websites Detection from Mendeley (Dataset 3). The experimental results showed an improvement using the optimized stacking ensemble method, where the detection accuracy reached 97.16%, 98.58%, and 97.39% for Dataset 1, Dataset 2, and Dataset 3, respectively.

Bacterial colonies detecting and counting is tedious and time-consuming work. Fortunately CNN (convolutional neural network) detection methods are effective for target detection. The bacterial colonies are a kind of small targets, which have been a difficult problem in the field of target detection technology. This paper proposes a small target enhancement detection method based on double CNNs, which can not only improve the detection accuracy, but also maintain the detection speed similar to the general detection model. The detection method uses double CNNs. The first CNN uses SSD_MOBILENET_V1 network with both target positioning and target recognition functions. The candidate targets are screened out with a low confidence threshold, which can ensure no missing detection of small targets. The second CNN obtains candidate target regions according to the first round of detection, intercepts image sub-blocks one by one, uses the MOBILENET_V1 network to filter out targets with a higher confidence threshold, which can ensure good detection of small targets. Through the two-round enhancement detection method has been transplanted to the embedded platform NVIDIA Jetson AGX Xavier, the detection accuracy of small targets is significantly improved, and the target error detection rate and missed detection rate are reduced to less than 1%.
