Modern satellite gravity missions and ground gravimetry provide operational data models that can be used in various studies in geology, tectonics, and climatology, etc. In the present study, sedimentary basins in the southern part of the East European Platform and adjoining areas including the Caucasus are studied by employing the approach based on decompensative gravity anomalies. The new model of sediments, implying their thickness and density, demonstrates several important features of the sedimentary cover, which were not or differently imaged by previous studies. We found a significant redistribution of the low-dense sediments in the Black Sea. Another principal feature is the increased thickness of relatively low-dense sediments in the Eastern Greater Caucasus. The deepest part of the South Caspian basin is shifted to the north, close to the Apsheron Trough. In its present position, it is almost joined with the Terek–Caspian depression, which depth is also increased. The thickness of sediments is significantly decreased in the eastern Pre-Caspian basin. Therefore, the new sedimentary cover model gives a more detailed description of its thickness and density, reveals new features and helps in better understanding of the evolution of the basins, providing a background for further detailed studies of the region.

<p><span>A new model has been developed for the density and thickness of the sedimentary cover in a vast region at the junction of the southern part of the East European Platform, the Pre-Caucasus and some structures adjacent to the south, including the Caucasus. Structure and density of sedimentary basins was studied by employing the approach based on decompensation of gravity anomalies. Decompensative correction for gravity anomalies reduces the effect of deep masses providing compensation of near-surface density anomalies, in contrast to the conventional isostatic or Bouguer anomalies. . The new model of sediments, which implies their thickness and density, gives a more detailed description of the sedimentary thickness and density and reveals new features which were not or differently imaged by previous studies. It helps in better understanding of the origin and evolution of the basins and provides a background for further detailed geological and geophysical studies of the region.</span></p>

The article gives a brief overview of the sedimentary cover of the Earth and summarizes volumes and mass of sediments contained in the Earth sedimentary layer (stratisphere). Using available data authors show unique nature of the South Caspian Basin and other rapidly subsiding basins with large amount of sediments and attenuated crust. Sedimentary, crustal and lithospheric thickness correlations are discussed.

Based on pyrolysis data an overview is given on the generative potential and maturity of individual stratigraphic units in the South Caspian sedimentary cover. Furthermore, the pyrolysis analyses indicate that the Lower Pliocene Productive Series being immature itself is likely to have received hydrocarbon charge from the underlying older strata. The present state of the art in studying hydrocarbon migration and the "source-accumulation" type relationship between source sediments and reservoired oils in the South Caspian basin are touched upon. The views of and geochemical arguments by different authors for charging the Lower Pliocene Productive Series reservoirs with hydrocarbons from the underlying Oligocene-Miocene source layers are presented. Quantitative aspects of hydrocarbon generation, fluid dynamics, and formation of anomalous temperature & pressure fields based on the results of basin modelling in Azerbaijan are considered. Based on geochemical data analysis and modelling studies, as well as honouring reports by other workers the importance and necessity of upward migration for hydrocarbon transfer from deep generation centers to reservoirs of the Productive Series are shown.

Abstract— The complete sections of the Lower and Upper Vendian of the East European Platform were opened in the boreholes of Belarus. This allows us to consider this region as a stratotype area. In order to update the paleontological characteristics of the Vendian, organic-walled microfossils from the Bogushevsk-1, Bogushevsk-2 (Liozno), and Lepel-1 reference boreholes drilled in the north of the Orsha Depression were studied. The transitive assemblage I with Leiosphaeridia minutissima–Leiosphaeridia tenuissima was recognized in the Lower Vendian Liozno Formation of the Volyn Series and the Upper Vendian Kotlin Formation. The Redkino microfossil assemblages were identified at three stratigraphic levels in the Nizy, Selyava, and Chernitsa formations: assemblage II with Morania zinkovi, assemblage III with Morania zinkovi–Tynnia precambrica, and assemblage IV with Morania zinkovi–Tynnia precambrica–Striatella coriacea, respectively. The Kotlin assemblage V with Vendotaenia antiqua–Primoflagella speciosa was distinguished in the upper part of the Kotlin Formation (Bogushevsk-1 borehole). On the basis of the taxonomic composition, assemblages III and IV are correlated with the first Redkino biota of the Starorusskaya Formation; assemblage V is correlated with the third Kotlin biota of the Vasileostrovskaya Formation of the northwestern part of Russia. Our data show a high biostratigraphic potential of organic-walled microfossils, which should be used to substantiate regional stratigraphic units of the Upper Vendian in the updated stratigraphic scheme of the East European Platform.

A prominent positive magnetic anomaly spans the 100 km distance between Prince Edward Island and Cape Breton Island in the southern Gulf of St. Lawrence. The anomaly occurs in an area of complex structure where Appalachian terrane boundaries are poorly resolved because of thick late Paleozoic sedimentary cover. Analysis of the magnetic anomaly led to the interpretation that it is produced by four separate, approximately circular, source bodies aligned along the northwesterly trend of the anomaly. Seismic data, physical property measurements, and magnetic and gravity anomalies were used to further investigate the anomaly sources through forward modeling techniques. The four source bodies have densities and magnetic susceptibilities compatible with dioritic to granitic compositions. Modeling also suggests that basement to the north of the plutons has higher density and susceptibility than basement to the south, and hence the source bodies are interpreted as plutons emplaced along the boundary between Ganderian composite terranes to the north and the Ganderian Brookville – Bras d’Or terrane to the south. This interpretation suggests that the Ganderia–Avalonia boundary is located farther south, and shows the need for re-evaluation of the location and role of the Canso fault in offsetting terranes between Cape Breton Island and southern New Brunswick.

AbstractThe Vendian in a stratotype area in the western part of the East European Platform includes three regional stratigraphic subdivisions: the Vilchanian, Volynian and Valdaian series, which clearly differ in structure and lithology. They are closely interconnected stratigraphically and geochronologically, and form an indivisible Late Baikalian structural stage of the platform sedimentary cover. The upper subdivision, the Valdaian Series, is palaeontologically substantiated and divided into horizons. The Vendian in such a composition has definite boundaries: the upper biostratigraphic, and lower lithostratigraphic ones, and is well correlated with the formations of the same age from other regions.

<p>Gravity Satellite has been widely used in tectonic studies and regional of geological mapping. The Satellite Gravity data are provided free by Scripps Institution of Oceanography, University of California San Diego. The data are acquired by GEOSAT and ERS-1 satellites with a 1.5 km resolution for one pixel. For a further application, the tilt derivative analytic technique was used in order to enhance linear trends of the geological structure revealed by the Bouguer anomalies. The method is represented by the value of an angle between the total horizontal and vertical derivative from the gravity data. The results show that the tilt derivative calculation has been able to map clearly some geological structures on the north of Sumatra i.e., the Aceh and the Seulimeuem segments, as well as some local faults around them. On the other hand, Banda Aceh as the capital city of Aceh Province and Pidie District is dominated by positive values of the tilt derivative anomalies. The data coincide with geological maps of both areas where they are covered by alluvial deposits. Based on the result, it can be concluded that the tilt derivative method is potentially used for quick interpretation of the satellite gravity data.</p>

Generalizations and analyses are given of the data accumulated to date on the content of Organic Matter (OM) in formation waters of various stratigraphic complexes, as well as of mud volcanoes, and the correlation with OM in South Caspian Basin (SCB) sedimentary rocks. Results are based on about 300 analyses of formation waters and waters of mud volcanoes, as well as on more than 400 analyses of the content of OM in rocks (outcrops and wells from both onshore and offshore petroleum fields of the SCB). The stratigraphic interval covers the period from the Lower Pliocene to the Jurassic, and the depth interval from 73 m to 6043 m. In these intervals, the values of Dissolved Organic Matter (DOM) in reservoir waters vary from 4.1 mg/L to 271.2 mg/L, averaging (219 analyses) 48.9 mg/L. A good correlation has been established between the values of DOM and OM in rocks. Paleogene and Jurassic rocks have the highest correlations. DOM varies with depth with an increase in value from a depth of about 3.3 km, likely due to catagenetic transformation of OM into hydrocarbons in the rock–water system. The highest values of DOM are for waters with mineralization less than 50 g/L. Mud volcano waters are characterized by low levels of DOM and low mineralization, likely due to the condensate nature. The results of the studies show that underground water, as one of the components of a single rock–water system of the Earth’s sedimentary cover, together with the rocks, participates in the processes of hydrocarbon generation and migration.
