The paper discusses the performances of a novel all-in-one adsorption thermal storage based on steam vapour and zeolite 13X for industrial end-users. Steam production/condensation for the adsorption/desorption processes are executed within the same vacuum reactor, where the zeolite is heated and cooled by the thermal fluid which flows within a heat exchanger. Both experimental approach and numerical method are used to assess the behaviour and energy performances of the novel system. So, a medium-scale prototype was constructed and some experimental tests for the charging and discharging phases were carried out, producing useful data for the validation of a time-dependent model of the adsorption/desorption processes, which resulted very reliable in the simulation of the thermal storage system. The charging and discharging efficiency of thermal energy can reach values higher than 80% and 50%, respectively. The experimental campaign and the simulative activities highlighted some operative criticalities of the all-in-one thermal storage system and suggested some possible technical improvements to face and solve them.

AbstractQuantitative prediction of the smoothing of mid-spatial frequency errors (MSFE) is urgently needed to realize process guidance for computer controlled optical surfacing (CCOS) rather than a qualitative analysis of the processing results. Consequently, a predictable time-dependent model combining process parameters and an error decreasing factor (EDF) were presented in this paper. The basic smoothing theory, solution method and modification of this model were expounded separately and verified by experiments. The experimental results show that the theoretical predicted curve agrees well with the actual smoothing effect. The smoothing evolution model provides certain theoretical support and guidance for the quantitative prediction and parameter selection of the smoothing of MSFE.

Organic dyes are extensively used in many industrial sectors, and their uncontrolled disposal into wastewaters raises serious concerns for environmental and human health. Due to the large variety of such pollutants, an effective remediation strategy should be characterized by a broad-spectrum efficacy. A promising strategy is represented by the combination of different adsorbent materials with complementary functionalities to develop composite materials that are expected to remove different contaminants. In the present work, a broad-spectrum adsorbent was developed by embedding zeolite 13X powder (ZX) in a chitosan (CS) aerogel (1:1 by weight). The CS–ZX composite adsorbent removes both anionic (indigo carmine, IC) and cationic (methylene blue, MB) dyes effectively, with a maximum uptake capacity of 221 mg/g and 108 mg/g, respectively. In addition, the adsorption kinetics are rather fast, with equilibrium conditions attained in less than 2 h. The composite exhibits good mechanical properties in both dry and wet state, which enables its handling for reusability purposes. In this regard, preliminary tests show that the full restoration of the IC removal ability over three adsorption–desorption cycles is achieved using a 0.1 M NaOH aqueous solution, while a 1 M NaCl aqueous solution allows one to preserve >60% of the MB removal ability.

The growing penetration of wind power in a power system brings great challenges to system operation flexibility. For generation planning in presence of high wind power penetration, it is essential to take the operation flexibility of the system into account. Firstly, this paper developed the system operation flexibility metrics through considering the flexibility contribution of thermal generating units (TGUs) by operational state transition. Secondly, a planning model for the bundled wind-thermal-storage generation system (BWTSGS) that considers the operation flexibility constraints is proposed. The planning model is used to determine the power and energy rating of an energy storage system (ESS) as well as the type and number of TGUs. A daily scheduling simulation model of a BWTSGS is proposed to calculate the operation cost for the planning model and consider the sequential operation characteristics of the BWTSGS. Further, in order to accelerate the computation, a wind power sequential clustering technique based on the discrete Fourier transform (DFT) method is developed for improving the computational efficiency. Case studies have been conducted on a 1000-MW wind farm to demonstrate the validity and effectiveness of the proposed model.

A time-dependent quasi-one-dimensional model is developed for studying high- pressure discharges in ablative capillaries used, for example, as plasma sources in electrothermal launchers. The main features of the model are (i) consideration of ablation effects in each of the continuity, momentum and energy equations; (ii) use of a non-ideal equation of state; and (iii) consideration of space- and time-dependent ionization.
