The carrot (Daucus carota L.), one of the most important vegetable crops in the world, is recognized as a source of different compounds with healthy properties. Due to their high content of anthocyanins, purple carrots have been used as a natural colorant source to face the increasing demand of consumers for non-synthetic products. However, the root developmental stage can greatly affect the phytochemical composition and, in this regard, the identification of chemical biomarkers for the optimal harvest time would be of paramount interest both from a nutritional point of view and for the agri-food industry. In the present work, the metabolic profiling of purple carrots was monitored over four months using high-resolution 1H NMR spectroscopy. Several metabolites were identified, and their quantitative variations allowed for the investigation of the carrot development processes. The metabolic profile analysis showed an increase in amino acid, NAD, and caffeic acid levels during carrot development. A more tardive harvest in December entailed an increase in levels of luteolin-7-O-glucoside, chlorogenic acid, falcarinol, and γ-aminobutyrate, and a decrease in carotenoids and ω-6 fatty acid. The results showed how the harvest time affects the composition in terms of flavonoids, phenols, and polyacetylenes, therefore, improving the bioactive compound content.

The increasing demand for a good quality of carrot tubers has yet been achieved, partly due to limitation in cultivation area. Extension of cultivation to low land has been attempted and suitable cultivation technology with yields 17.5 – 25 ton/ha has been developed. However, cultivation of carrot in lowlands is very limited as farmers assume that carrots cannot be cultivated in the lowlands. To promote this, a community service (PKM) aimed to disseminate environmentally-friendly carrot cultivation technology in the lowlands has been undertaken in Bagik Polak Village, Labuapi District, West Lombok Regency from June to October 2020. The PKM was carried out in collaboration with the Gapoktan Bersatu and UPTD Agriculture of Labuapi District, through demonstration plots and extension. The activity began with socialization by discussion with the officials of Labuapi UPTD Agriculture and management of the Bersatu Gapoktan, followed by demplot for carrot cultivation at an altitude of ± 41 m above sea level. At harvest time, the demplot results were exposed to the community via extension at the house of the Gapoktan leader. By directly observing the demplot results, participants were motivated to cultivate environmentally-friendly carrots, and stated that they will undertake trials in theirs fields. The Labuapi UPTD will set a demplot in the UPTD yard and promote carrot plants in the program for yard optimality. In addition, the farmers agreed that this activity has bring a new inspiration to diversify vegetable crops with a higher economic crops

Rising consumer attraction towards superfoods and the steadily increasing demand for healthy, environmentally sustainable, and regionally produced food products has sharpened the demand for chia. Over the course of 4 years, two early flowering chia varieties belonging to Salvia hispanica L., and Salvia columbariae Benth. Species were identified to complete their phenological development and, therefore, able to reach maturity under a photoperiod >12 h, thus enabling the cultivation of chia in central Europe—more specifically, in southwestern Germany—consistently for the first time. Results obtained by the conducted field trial in 2018 showed that chia seed yields and thousand-seed mass ranged from 284.13 to 643.99 kg ha−1 and 0.92 to 1.36 g, respectively. Further, the statistical analyses showed that the protein content of the cultivated chia varieties ranged from 22.14 to 27.78%, the mucilage content varied from 10.35 to 20.66%, and the crude oil content amounted up to 28.00 and 31.73%. Fatty acid profiles were similar to previously reported data with α-Linolenic acid being the most prominent one, ranging from 60.40 to 65.87%, and we obtained ω6:ω3 ratios between 0.2 and 0.3. In conclusion, chia could represent a promising raw material from a nutritional point of view, while being able to diversify the local food basis of southwestern Germany.

Olive oil has been favored as high-quality edible oil because it contains balanced fatty acids (FAs) and high levels of minor components. The contents of FAs and minor components are variable in olive fruits of different color at harvest time, which render it difficult to determine the optimal harvest strategy for olive oil producing. Here, we combined metabolome, Pacbio Iso-seq, and Illumina RNA-seq transcriptome to investigate the association between metabolites and gene expression of olive fruits at harvest time. A total of 34 FAs, 12 minor components, and 181 other metabolites (including organic acids, polyols, amino acids, and sugars) were identified in this study. Moreover, we proposed optimal olive harvesting strategy models based on different production purposes. In addition, we used the combined Pacbio Iso-seq and Illumina RNA-seq gene expression data to identify genes related to the biosynthetic pathways of hydroxytyrosol and oleuropein. These data lay the foundation for future investigations of olive fruit metabolism and gene expression patterns, and provide a method to obtain olive harvesting strategies for different production purposes.

In recent years, 3D city models are in high demand by many public and private organisations, and the steadily growing capacity in both quality and quantity are increasing demand. The quality evaluation of these 3D models is a relevant issue both from the scientific and practical points of view. In this paper, we present a method for the quality evaluation of 3D building models which are reconstructed automatically from terrestrial laser scanning (TLS) data based on an attributed building grammar. The entire evaluation process has been performed in all the three dimensions in terms of completeness and correctness of the reconstruction. Six quality measures are introduced to apply on four datasets of reconstructed building models in order to describe the quality of the automatic reconstruction, and also are assessed on their validity from the evaluation point of view.

Fodder beets (Beta vulgaris L.) are especially respected for their high feeding value and high netto-energy yield per hectare. The price per nutritive value is lowest as compared to other forages. Preservation of fodders beets demands thorough cleaning without damaging and regularly occurs as a whole in well closed piles. In addition, feeding them to the animals is labour demanding. These disadvantages enforce the research towards other preservation methods which may be able to valorise this valuable type of roughage. The preservation of fodder beets in silages using silo bags, either separately or in combination with maize was investigated. Fodder beets were harvested and ensilaged at the ideal moment of maize harvest (October) or fodder beets were harvested at the ideal moment for fodder beet harvest (November) and consequently ensilaged with previously ensilaged maize. Highest energy yields of the silages were recorded at optimal harvest time for fodder beets. Ensilaging fodder beets separately resulted in large energy losses due to effluent and dry matter losses. Using lab scale silage, possible solutions for these large losses were investigated. Addition of 10% maize did reduce the effluent losses but dry matter losses remained at a high level. Addition of 4,5 l propionic acid per ton beets reduced effluent and dry matter losses sufficiently. Ensilaging foliage was another point of interest. This appeared to result in a lowered energy yield at organic and dry matter basis, an increased amount of ashes and doubling of the iron (Fe) concentration

This article analyzes economic tradeoffs among harvest date, fertilizer applied, nutrient removal, and switchgrass yield as they vary with respect to input and output prices. Economic sensitivity analyses suggest that higher biomass prices lead to earlier harvest. Optimal harvest time occurs beyond time of maximum yield because nutrient removal in the biomass is an important economic consideration. Switchgrass price premia that reflect the cost of non-optimal harvest time are driven by standing crop yield loss, nutrient removal, storage loss, and opportunity cost. These price premia could provide a mechanism to compensate producers for alternative harvest times and aid with logistics management.
