Ti alloys are prone to corrosion and wear due to the hostile environment in bodily fluids, but the Ti-45Nb alloy is considered to be a promising titanium alloy with excellent biocompatibility and resistance to physiological corrosion. In this study, Nb ions were implanted into a TA3 alloy and the effect on the biological corrosion as well as tribocorrosion behavior of TA3 in Ringer’s solution was systematically investigated. The surface microstructure and XRD results revealed that the implanted samples showed a smoother surface due to the sputtering and radiation damages, and the Nb ions mainly existed in the alloy as the solid solution element. The electrochemical polarization tests showed that the implantation of Nb ions can increase the corrosion potential of the samples, showing a better thermodynamic stability. The tribocorrosion tests showed that the implanted samples exhibited a better thermodynamic stability in a corrosive environment accompanied by wear behavior, and the worn surface showed fewer pitting pits, indicating a better corrosion resistance. However, the abrasive wear and oxidation wear degree of the sample increased because of partial softening of the surface and brittle passivation film.

Steel wires are critical load-bearing components in a wide range of applications such as elevator, cranes, mine haulage etc. The traction machine of elevator which transmits power to wire rope causes micro-slip between wire rope and sheave during reciprocating action. The lubrication condition of wire rope is also changed due to the lack of grease. This study focuses on the wear behavior of steel wire and effect of both dry and grease conditions by using the rolling/sliding contact wear tester done under various slip ratios and rolling speeds. The experimental results of the wear volume curve against the number of revolutions under the grease condition are compared with the results under dry condition. The worn surface of steel wire and the size of wear particles were observed by SEM. In order to quantify the wear amount of steel wire we established an equation and finally obtained the wear coefficient.

The wear behavior of brush-plating a Ni-W-Co/SiC composite layer on 1045 steel with oil lubrication is investigated. The composite layer is determined by OM, XRD and TEM. The worn surface of the plated layer is observed with SEM and laser profile analysis. The composition and average size of worn debris are analyzed by means of ferrograph and fluid spectrum. The results show that the brush-plated composite layer with added SiC particles reveals high wear resistance compared to the Ni-W-Co brush-plated layer.

Non-Asbestos organic composite friction materials are increasingly used in automotive brake disc pad applications. The present paper deals with the role of various organic fibers Kevlar, Acrylic fibers and the Rock fiber namely the Lapinus fiber on the fade and recovery behavior of friction composites. Three different friction composites were developed with same formulation varying only the percentage of Kevlar, Acrylic and lapinus fibers within the formulation. The formulations containing 13.5% of these fibers were developed as brake pads and designated as NA01, NA02 and NA03 respectively. The chemical and Mechanical properties are tested as per Indian Industrial standards.. The composites are then tested for the tribo-performance using Chase Testing Machine following SAE J661a standards. The fade µ, recovery µ and wear are significantly influenced by the amount and type of fiber combinations. Also the TGA reveals the degradation temperature of these fibers. Composite NA 03 containing Kevlar and lapinus combination is found to have good tribo performance. Worn surface analysis by SEM has proved to be useful in understanding the wear behavior of the composites.

Fe-28Al and Fe-28Al-10Ti alloys were prepared by mechanical alloying and hot pressing. The phases and dry sliding wear behavior were studied. The results show that Fe-28Al bulk materials are mainly characterized by the low ordered B2 Fe3Al structure with some dispersed Al2O3 particles. Fe-28Al-10Ti exhibits more excellent wear resistance than Fe-28Al, especially after long distance sliding wear test. There are obvious differences in wear mechanisms of Fe-28Al and Fe-28Al-10Ti alloys under different testing conditions. Under the load of 100N, there is plastic deformation on the worn surface of Fe-28Al. The main wear performance of Fe-28Al-10Ti is particle abrasion, the characteristics of which are micro cutting and micro furrows, but micro-crack and layer splitting begin to form on the surface of Fe-28Al. Under the load of 200N, serious plastic deformation and work-hardening lead to rapid crack propagation and eventually the fatigue fracture of Fe-28Al. Plastic deformation is the main wear mechanism of Fe-28Al-10Ti under the load of 200N, which are characterized by micro-crack and small splitting from the worn surface.

The sliding wear behavior of Cu-Ag alloy in Cu cladding Al contact wire against 45# steel or bronze block was tested, then surface morphology was investigated in different load and velocity. The results indicated that the worn surface had plastic deformation and many clear furrows and cutting traces along the sliding direction. There were black oxide of copper on the worn surface. The oxide was both abrasive and lubrication. The mechanisms transformed from abrasive attrition into adhesive wear. Spalling pits and adhesive blocks with bronze friction were significantly bigger than that of steel, and the mechanisms was adhesive wear.

In the present study, the statistical analysis on tribological behavior of RZ5/TiB2 magnesium-based metal matrix composites is carried out using Taguchi design and analysis of variance (ANOVA) technique. Taguchi analysis using signal-to-noise ratio indicates that the sliding distance and wt.% TiB2 are the most significant factors in evaluating weight loss and coefficient of friction, respectively. The regression equation is formulated utilizing the ANOVA technique to study the output responses based on the input abrasive wear test experimental results. The regression equation is validated through a comprehensive study taking a series of abrasive wear tests and indicates the percentage deviation of regression modeling is in the range of ± 10%. The individual and combined effect of wear parameters on tribological behavior are investigated through the main effect plots and response surface plots. The micrograph of the worn surface of RZ5/TiB2 composites is studied using field emission scanning electron microscope (FESEM), indicating the formation of an oxide layer on the worn surface.

In this study, the effect of different counterparts on the wear resistance of AA6082 aluminum alloy was investigated. In tests using pin-on-disk method, 6 mm diameter Al2O3, 100Cr6 and WC-6Co balls were used as counterparts. The tests were carried out using 500 m sliding distance and 5N load. The lowest specific wear rate was measured as 7.58x10-4 mm3/Nm in WC-6Co / AA6082 couple, and the highest value was measured as 9.71x10-4 mm3/Nm in 100Cr6/AA6082 couple. In the Al2O3/AA6082 couple, the specific wear rate of the AA6082-T6 sample was determined as 8.23x10-4 mm3/Nm.While it was observed that the dominant wear type in the 100Cr6/AA6082 pair was abrasive wear, oxidation wear and oxide tribofilm were detected in the WC-6Co/AA6082 and Al2O3/AA6082 couple besides the abrasive wear.

The aim of the present work is to investigate vickers hardness, wear behavior as well as to perform optimization of wear data for pure Al and Al-Al2O3-TiO2 hybrid metal matrix composites. The hybrid composite (Al-Al2O3-TiO2) was prepared by mechanical stir casting with equal proportion of reinforcement (2.5, 5.0, 7.5 and 10 wt.%). Vickers hardness, wear behavior and its optimization using ANOVA as well as TOPSIS along with the microstructure of the worn surface of prepared sample has been investigated. Vickers hardness increases with an increase in weight percentage of reinforcements. Wear test was carried out under dry sliding condition by pin-on-disc wear machine according to the ASTM G99-95a standard. Wear properties of the sample have been obtained at different percentages of reinforcement. Wear resistance of the hybrid composite increases with the variation of percentage of titanium oxide particles due to its lubricating properties. ANOVA shows that the reinforcements and load have different effect on samples wear rate. TOPSIS analysis shows rank of the sample according to its wear rate. Worn surface morphology was investigated and it showed deep grooves, more debris, delamination and rough surface in pure Al sample as compared to the high percentage of reinforced hybrid metal matrix composites.

Friction and wear tests of stainless steel rubbing against copper-impregnated metalized carbon with electric current were carried on the pin-on-disc tester. The result indicates that arc discharge occurs in the process of experiments, and the intensity of arc discharge of interface increases with increasing of electric current and sliding velocity. As increasing of the arc discharge intensity, friction coefficient shows a tendency of slightly increase. While the rate of copper-impregnated metalized carbon material increase significantly with the increase of arc discharge intensity. Through observing the worn surface morphology of pin samples, it is found that the abrasive wear is dominant at small arc discharge due to worn particles and arc ablation craters, but arc erosion and oxidation wear are the main wear mechanisms in condition of large arc discharge due to arc discharge and its producing high temperature. The materials transfer of contact couple occurs in the process of friction and wear.

AbstractIn this study, the influence of micro- and nanofiller contents on the tribological performance of epoxy composites was studied. The fillers are micro-Al2O3, micro-TiO2, and micro-fly ash and nano-Al2O3, nano-TiO2, and nanoclay fillers. The microfillers were added to the epoxy by 10%, 20%, and 30% by weight. The nanofillers were added to the epoxy by 2.5%, 5%, and 10%. Friction and wear tests were conducted using the pin-on-disc arrangement. Tribo elements consisted of polymer pin and DIN 1.2344 steel counterface disc. A load value of 15 N, a sliding speed of 0.4 m/s, a sliding distance of 2000 m, and dry atmospheric conditions were applied to test conditions. The results show that the friction coefficients and the specific wear rates of the nanofilled composites increase as the filler content increases. For microfiller-filled epoxy composites, these values decrease as filler content increases. The tribological performance of epoxy composites is enhanced by the addition of microfillers, and the higher enhancement is reached with the addition of 30% fly ash filler. Finally, the pin and disc worn surface images show the presence of adhesive and some abrasive wear mechanisms.
