The process of radiometric calibration would be coupled with the polarization properties of an optical system for spectropolarimetry, which would have significant influences on reconstructed Stokes parameters. In this paper, we propose a novel polarization radiometric calibration model that decouples the radiometric calibration coefficient and polarization properties of an optical system. The alignment errors of the polarization module and the variation of the retardations at different fields of view are considered and calibrated independently. According to these calibration results, the input Stokes parameters at different fields of view can be reconstructed accurately through the proposed model. Simulations are performed for the presented calibration and reconstruction methods, which indicate that the measurement accuracy of polarization information is improved compared with the traditional undecoupled calibration method.

In this paper, a new on-orbit polarization calibration method for the multichannel polarimetric camera is presented. A polarization calibration model for the polarimetric camera is proposed by taking analysis of the polarization radiation transmission process. In order to get the polarization parameters in the calibration model, an on-orbit measurement scheme is reported, which uses a solar diffuser and a built-in rotatable linear analyzer. The advantages of this scheme are sharing the same calibration assembly with the radiometric calibration and acquiring sufficient polarization accuracy. The influence of the diffuser for the measurement is analyzed. By using a verification experiment, the proposed method can achieve on-orbit polarization calibration. The experimental results show that the relative deviation for the measured degree of linear polarization is 0.8% at 670 nm, which provides a foundation for the accurate application of polarimetric imaging detection.

Radiometric calibration of laser-based, topographic lidar sensors that measure range via time of flight or phase difference is well established. However, inexpensive, short-range lidar sensors that utilize non-traditional ranging techniques, such as indirect time of flight, may report radiometric quantities that are not appropriate for existing calibration methods. One such lidar sensor is the TeraRanger Evo 60 m by Terabee, whose reported amplitude measurements do not vary smoothly with the amount of return signal power. We investigate the performance of a new radiometric calibration model, one based on a neural network, applied to the Evo 60 m. The proposed model is found to perform similarly to those applied to traditional lidar sensors, with root mean square errors in predicted target reflectance of no more than ±6% for non-specular surfaces. The radiometric calibration model provides a generic approach that may be applicable to other low-cost lidar sensors that report return signal amplitudes that are not smoothly proportional to target range and reflectance.

Radiometric calibration of synthetic aperture radar (SAR) is an important work related to pixel values and the backscattering coefficient of ground targets. With a consideration of the difference between near space and spaceborne, airborne platforms, this paper proposes the radiometric calibration method which is applicable to near space platform. A radiometric calibration model of near space SAR is established, and it is analyzed and validated by experimental data.

This paper shows that the accuracy of relative satellite measurements depend not only on the length of the baseline, as it is regulated by the rating formula of accuracy of GNSS equipment, but also on the duration of observations. As a result of the strict adjustment much redundant satellite networks with different duration of observations obtained covariance matrix of baselines, the most realistic reflecting the actual error of satellite observations. Research of forms of communication of these errors from length of the baseline and duration of its measurement is executed. A significant influence of solar activity on accuracy of satellite measurements, in general, leads to unequal similar series of measurements made at different periods, for example, in the production of monitoring activities. The model of approximation of the functional dependence of accuracy of the baseline from its length and duration of observations having good qualitative characteristics is offered. Based on the proposed model, we analyzed the dynamics of changes in measurement accuracy with an increase in observation time.

To calibrate the low signal response of the ocean color (OC) bands and test the stability of the Fengyun-3D (FY-3D)/Medium Resolution Spectral Imager II (MERSI-II), an absolute radiometric calibration field test of FY-3D/MERSI-II at the Lake Qinghai Radiometric Calibration Site (RCS) was carried out in August 2018. The lake surface and atmospheric parameters were mainly measured by advanced observation instruments, and the MODerate spectral resolution atmospheric TRANsmittance algorithm and computer model (MODTRAN4.0) was used to simulate the multiple scattering radiance value at the altitude of the sensor. The results showed that the relative deviations between bands 9 and 12 are within 5.0%, while the relative deviations of bands 8, and 13 are 17.1%, and 12.0%, respectively. The precision of the calibration method was verified by calibrating the Aqua/Moderate-resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS) and National Polar-orbiting Partnership (NPP)/Visible Infrared Imaging Radiometer (VIIRS), and the deviation of the calibration results was evaluated with the results of the Dunhuang RCS calibration and lunar calibration. The results showed that the relative deviations of NPP/VIIRS were within 7.0%, and the relative deviations of Aqua/MODIS were within 4.1% from 400 nm to 600 nm. The comparisons of three on-orbit calibration methods indicated that band 8 exhibited a large attenuation after launch and the calibration results had good consistency at the other bands except for band 13. The uncertainty value of the whole calibration system was approximately 6.3%, and the uncertainty brought by the field surface measurement reached 5.4%, which might be the main reason for the relatively large deviation of band 13. This study verifies the feasibility of the vicarious calibration method at the Lake Qinghai RCS and provides the basis and reference for the subsequent on-orbit calibration of FY-3D/MERSI-II.

The article proposes a solution to the problem of increasing the accuracy of determining the main shaping dimensions of axisymmetric parts through a control system that implements the optical method of spatial resolution. The influence of the projection error of a passive optical system for controlling the geometric parameters of bodies of revolution from the image of its sections, obtained by a digital camera with non-telecentric optics, on the measurement accuracy is shown. Analytical dependencies are derived that describe the features of the transmission of measuring information of a system with non-telecentric optics in order to estimate the projection error. On the basis of the obtained dependences, a method for compensating the projection error of the systems for controlling the geometry of the main shaping surfaces of bodies of revolution has been developed, which makes it possible to increase the accuracy of determining dimensions when using digital cameras with a resolution of 5 megapixels or more, equipped with short-focus lenses. The possibility of implementing the proposed technique is confirmed by the results of experimental studies.

The fisheye lens is a kind of ultra wide angle lens, which can produce a big super-wide-angle lens distortion. In order to cover a large scope of light, barrel distortion is artificially added to the optical system. However, in some cases this distortion is not allowed, then it requires calibrations of those distortions. Most of the traditional distortion calibration method uses target plane calibration to do it. This paper discusses the way of design fisheye lens, through which we can know the forming process of distortion clearly. Based on this paper, a simple and effective calibration method can be understood. Different from common camera calibration method, the proposed calibration method can avoid the error occurring in the process of calibrating test, that directly use the lens’ characteristic curve. Through multiple sets of experimental verifications, this method is effective and feasible.

Fiber-optic gyroscopes (FOGs)-based Measurement While Drilling system (MWD) is a newly developed instrument to survey the borehole trajectory continuously and in real time. However, because of the strong vibration while drilling, the measurement accuracy of FOG-based MWD deteriorates. It is urgent to improve the measurement accuracy while drilling. Therefore, this paper proposes an innovative scheme for the vibration error of the FOG-based MWD. Firstly, the nonlinear error models for the FOGs and ACCs are established. Secondly, a 36-order Extended Kalman Filter (EKF) combined with a calibration method based on 24-position is designed to identify the coefficients in the error model. Moreover, in order to obtain a higher accurate error model, an iterative calibration method has been suggested to suppress calibration residuals. Finally, vibration experiments simulating the drilling vibration in the laboratory is implemented. Compared to the original data, compensated the linear error items, the error of 3D borehole trajectory can only be reduced by a ratio from 10% to 34%. While compensating for the nonlinear error items of the FOG-based MWD, the error of 3D borehole trajectory can be reduced by a ratio from 44.13% to 97.22%. In conclusion, compensation of the nonlinear error of FOG-based MWD could improve the trajectory survey accuracy under vibration.

AbstractPerformance assessment, in which human raters assess examinee performance in a practical task, often involves the use of a scoring rubric consisting of multiple evaluation items to increase the objectivity of evaluation. However, even when using a rubric, assigned scores are known to depend on characteristics of the rubric’s evaluation items and the raters, thus decreasing ability measurement accuracy. To resolve this problem, item response theory (IRT) models that can estimate examinee ability while considering the effects of these characteristics have been proposed. These IRT models assume unidimensionality, meaning that a rubric measures one latent ability. In practice, however, this assumption might not be satisfied because a rubric’s evaluation items are often designed to measure multiple sub-abilities that constitute a targeted ability. To address this issue, this study proposes a multidimensional IRT model for rubric-based performance assessment. Specifically, the proposed model is formulated as a multidimensional extension of a generalized many-facet Rasch model. Moreover, a No-U-Turn variant of the Hamiltonian Markov chain Monte Carlo algorithm is adopted as a parameter estimation method for the proposed model. The proposed model is useful not only for improving the ability measurement accuracy, but also for detailed analysis of rubric quality and rubric construct validity. The study demonstrates the effectiveness of the proposed model through simulation experiments and application to real data.

Nowadays, due to the advantages of non-contact and high-speed, vision-based pose measurements have been widely used for aircraft performance testing in a wind tunnel. However, usually glass ports are used to protect cameras against the high-speed airflow influence, which will lead to a big measurement error. In this paper, to further improve the vision-based pose measurement accuracy, an imaging model which considers the refraction light of the observation window was proposed. In this method, a nonlinear camera calibration model considering the refraction brought by the wind tunnel observation window, was established first. What’s more, a new method for the linear calibration of the normal vector of the glass observation window was presented. Then, combining with the proposed matching method based on coplanarity constraint, the six pose parameters of the falling target could be calculated. Finally, the experimental setup was established to conduct the pose measurement study in the laboratory, and the results satisfied the application requirements. Besides, experiments for verifying the vision measurement accuracy were also performed, and the results indicated that the displacement and angle measurement accuracy approximately increased by 57% and 33.6%, respectively, which showed the high accuracy of the proposed method.
