Large earthquakes are followed by a sequence of aftershocks. Therefore, a reasonable prediction of damage potential caused by mainshock (MS)–aftershock (AS) sequences is important in seismic risk assessment. This paper comprehensively examines the interdependence between earthquake intensity measures (IMs) and structural damage under MS–AS sequences to identify optimal IMs for predicting the MS–AS damage potential. To do this, four categories of IMs are considered to represent the characteristics of a specific MS–AS sequence, including mainshock IMs, aftershock IMs (i.e., IMMS and IMAS, respectively), and two newly proposed IMs through taking an entire MS–AS sequence as one nominal ground motion (i.e., IM1MS–AS), or determining the ratio of IMAS to IMMS (i.e., IM2MS–AS), respectively. The single-degree-of-freedom systems with varying hysteretic behaviors are subjected to 662 real MS–AS sequences to estimate structural damage in terms the Park–Ang damage index. The intensities in terms of IMMS, IMAS, and IM1MS–AS are correlated with the accumulative damage of structures (i.e., DI1MS–AS). Moreover, the ratio (i.e., DI2MS–AS) of the AS-induced damage increment to the MS-induced damage is related to IM2MS–AS. The results show that IM2MS–AS exhibits significantly better performance than IMMS, IMAS, and IM1MS–AS for predicting the MS–AS damage potential, due to its high interdependence with DI2MS–AS. Among the considered 22 classic IMs, Arias intensity, root-square velocity, and peak ground displacement are respectively the optimal acceleration-, velocity-, and displacement-related IMs to formulate IM2MS–AS. Finally, two empirical equations are proposed to predict the correlations between IM2MS–AS and DI2MS–AS in the entire structural period range.

The concept of seismic intensity measures has long beendiscussed and has been collected by researchers among whom are by [1-6]. However, the effect of earthquake duration on the structural response hasnot received attention from the researcher so it has not been seen in the listof the existing seismic intensity measures. In the spectral response, forexample, it has been accommodated peak value and earthquake frequencycontent but has not accommodated the duration of the earthquake. Theeffect of earthquake duration on a response, damage or collapse capacity ofthe structure has been done by the researchers [7-10]. The spectrallyequivalent approach/control has been used by [9,10]., while the collapsecapacity approach is cursed by [8]. The use of the classification of theearthquake frequency content as independent variables has been suggestedby [7]. In this study, the classification of earthquake frequency (lowfrequency), earthquake duration as the independent variable and peakacceleration control have been used. Single degree of Freedom (SDOF)structures excited by 15-earthquakes with effective durations varyingbetween te = 6.34 to 30.18 s have been used. The results showed that notall seismic intensity measure used had a strong relationship with effectiveduration. The earthquake effective duration has a positive relationship withthe damage index but the relationship is relatively weak

Abstract. We analyze variations of the LF subionospheric signal amplitude and phase from JJY transmitter in Japan (F=40 kHz) received in Petropavlovsk-Kamchatsky station during seismically quiet and active periods including also periods of magnetic storms. After 20 s averaging, the frequency range of the analysis is 0.28–15 mHz that corresponds to the period range from 1 to 60 min. Changes in spectra of the LF signal perturbations are found several days before and after three large earthquakes, which happened in November 2004 (M=7.1), August 2005 (M=7.2) and November 2006 (M=8.2) inside the Fresnel zone of the Japan-Kamchatka wavepath. Comparing the perturbed and background spectra we have found the evident increase in spectral range 10–25 min that is in the compliance with theoretical estimations on lithosphere-ionosphere coupling by the Atmospheric Gravity Waves (T>6 min). Similar changes are not found for the periods of magnetic storms.

Civil infrastructures, such as highway bridges, located in seismically active regions are often subjected to multiple earthquakes, including multiple main shocks during their service life or main shock–aftershock sequences. Repeated seismic events result in reduced structural capacity and may lead to bridge collapse, causing disruption in the normal functioning of transportation networks. This study proposes a framework to predict damage accumulation in structures subjected to multiple shock scenarios after developing damage index prediction models and accounting for the probabilistic nature of the hazard. The versatility of the proposed framework is demonstrated on a case-study highway bridge located in California for two distinct hazard scenarios: (1) multiple main shocks during the service life and (2) multiple aftershock earthquake occurrences following a single main shock. Results reveal that in both cases there is a significant increase in damage index exceedance probabilities due to repeated shocks within the time window of interest.

One of the important issues to conduct the damage detection of a structure using vibration-based damage detection (VBDD) is not only to detect the damage but also to locate and quantify the damage. In this paper a systematic way of damage assessment, including identification of damage location and damage quantification, is proposed by using output-only measurement. Four level of damage identification algorithms are proposed. First, to identify the damage occurrence, null-space and subspace damage index are used. The eigenvalue difference ratio is also discussed for detecting the damage. Second, to locate the damage, the change of mode shape slope ratio and the prediction error from response using singular spectrum analysis are used. Finally, to quantify the damage the RSSI-COV algorithm is used to identify the change of dynamic characteristics together with the model updating technique, the loss of stiffness can be identified. Experimental data collected from the bridge foundation scouring in hydraulic lab was used to demonstrate the applicability of the proposed methods. The computation efficiency of each method is also discussed so as to accommodate the online damage detection.

The deflection of the beam estimated from modal flexibility matrix (MFM) indirectly is used in structural damage detection due to the fact that deflection is less sensitive to experimental noise than the element in MFM. However, the requirement for mass-normalized mode shapes (MMSs) with a high spatial resolution and the difficulty in damage quantification restricts the practicability of MFM-based deflection damage detection. A damage detection method using the deflections estimated from MFM is proposed for beam structures. The MMSs of beams are identified by using a parked vehicle. The MFM is then formulated to estimate the positive-bending-inspection-load (PBIL) caused deflection. The change of deflection curvature (CDC) is defined as a damage index to localize damage. The relationship between the damage severity and the deflection curvatures is further investigated and a damage quantification approach is proposed accordingly. Numerical and experimental examples indicated that the presented approach can detect damages with adequate accuracy at the cost of limited number of sensors. No finite element model (FEM) is required during the whole detection process.

This research identifies the significant optimal intensity measures (IM) for seismic performance assessments of the fixed offshore jacket platforms. A four-legged jacket platform for the oil and gas operation is deployed to investigate the seismic performance. The jacket platform is applied with nonlinearly modeled using finite element (FE) software OpenSees. A total of 80 ground motions and 21 different IMs are incorporated for numerical analyses. Nonlinear time-history analyses are performed to obtain the jacket structure’s engineering demand parameters (EDP): peak acceleration and displacement at the top of the structure. Four important statistical parameters: practicality, efficiency, proficiency, and coefficient of determination, are then calculated to find the significant IMs for seismic performance of the jacket structure. The results show that acceleration-related IMs: effective design acceleration (EDA), A95 parameter, and peak ground acceleration (PGA) are optimal IMs, and the acceleration-related IMs have good agreements with the acceleration-related EDP.

Vibration and acoustic-based health monitoring techniques are presented to monitor structural health under dynamic environment. In order to extract damage sensitive features, linear and nonlinear dimensional reduction techniques are applied and compared. First, a vibration numerical study based on the damage index method is used to provide both location and severity of impact damage. Next, controlled scaled experimental measurements are taken to investigate the aeroacoustic properties of sub-scale wings under known damage conditions. The aeroacoustic nature of the flow field in and around generic aircraft wing damage is determined to characterize the physical mechanism of noise generated by the damage and its applicability to battle damage detection. Simulated battle damage is investigated using a baseline, and two damage models introduced; namely, (1) an undamaged wing as baseline, (2) chordwise-spanwise-partial-penetration (SCPP), and (3) spanwise-chordwise-full-penetration (SCFP). Dimensional reduction techniques are employed to extract time-frequency domain features, which can be used to detect the presence of structural damage. Results are given to illustrate effectiveness of this approach.

Mode shapes (MSs) have been extensively used to detect structural damage. This paper presents a new non-model-based damage identification method that uses measured MSs to identify damage in plates. A MS damage index (MSDI) is proposed to identify damage near regions with consistently high values of MSDIs associated with MSs of different modes. A MS of a pseudo-undamaged plate can be constructed for damage identification using a polynomial of a properly determined order that fits the corresponding MS of a damaged plate, if the associated undamaged plate is geometrically smooth and made of materials that have no stiffness and mass discontinuities. It is shown that comparing a MS of a damaged plate with that of a pseudo-undamaged plate is better for damage identification than with that of an undamaged plate. Effectiveness and robustness of the proposed method for identifying damage of different positions and areas are numerically investigated using different MSs; effects of crucial factors that determine effectiveness of the proposed method are also numerically investigated. Damage in the form of a machined thickness reduction area was introduced to an aluminum plate; it was successfully identified by the proposed method using measured MSs of the damaged plate.
