Previous studies using probiotics have shown strain-dependent effects on body mass index (BMI), body mass, or fat mass (FM). The aim of this study was to evaluate how the addition of yogurt containing Lactobacillus acidophilus LA-5 and Bifidobacterium animalis subsp. lactis BB-12 strains to a diet plan affects selected anthropometric parameters in obese people on an energy-restricted diet. Fifty-four subjects aged 20–49 (34.52 ± 9.58) years were included in this study. The recruited subjects were assigned to two subgroups: consuming probiotic yogurt along with a hypocaloric diet (GP) (n–27) or the same diet but without an intentional introduction of yogurt (GRD) (n–27) for 12 weeks. Both GP and GRD decreased body weight, BMI, fat mass and visceral fat by 5.59 kg and 4.71 kg, 1.89 and 1.61 kg/m2, 4.80 kg and 4.07 kg, and 0.68 and 0.65 L, respectively, although the obtained differences were not significant. Analysis of GP and GRD results separately at the beginning and end of the intervention showed that fat loss was substantial in both groups (p < 0.05). Consumption of yogurt containing LA-5 and BB-12 does not significantly improve anthropometric parameters in obese patients.

Aim. The aim of this systematic review was to assess the effect of vitamin K supplementation on anthropometric parameters and adipokine levels in adults.Material and Methods. Four databases (PubMed, Web of Sciences, Scopus and the Cochrane Library) were searched to select studies in which the effect of vitamin K supplementation on body weight, body mass index (BMI), fat mass, leptin and adiponectin levels were assessed.Results. We identified nine studies that included a total of 542 subjects. Vitamin K supplementation did not influence body weight, BMI and percentage of fat mass. In addition, the effect of vitamin K supplementation on adipokines levels was equivocal. Conclusions. Vitamin K supplementation did not affect anthropometric parameters and adipokines levels. Nevertheless, further studies are needed to clarify the effect of vitamin K supplementation on these parameters in adults.

The aim of this study — to identify how anthropometric measurements are connected with spine sagittal curves inschoolchildren.Anthropometric and sagittal body posture measurements were performed for 405 schoolchildren, age range 10—13years. Such anthropometric measurements as body height, weight, fat mass and fat free mass were assessed. Degreesof thoracic kyphosis and lumbar lordosis as sagittal profile features were evaluated.According to the data analysis could be concluded, that coherence between anthropometric parameters and spine’ssagittal profile differs according to gender. The number of statistically significant connections between these twoparameters’ groups was greater in boys. Anthropometric measurements had greater coherence with thoracic kyphosisin comparison with lumbar lordosis. Body weight and fat mass were statistically significantly different according tokyphosis and lordosis values in boys, although fat-free body mass had no significant difference with sagittal curves’expression. Body weight, fat mass and fat-free body mass among girls were associated only with thoracic kyphosis. Keywords: thoracic kyphosis, lumbar lordosis, height, weight, fat mass.

OBJECTIVE: To investigate the effectiveness of a body mass reduction programme entailing diet caloric restriction and moderate physical activity with or without supplementary treatment with recombinant (r) GH or steroids to improve body composition and muscle performance in severely obese women aged 61-75 years. METHODS: Twenty women were randomly assigned to one of three groups: body mass reduction alone; body mass reduction plus rGH; body mass reduction plus nandrolone undecanoate. Body composition, isotonic muscle strength and anaerobic power output during jumping were determined before and after the 3-week period. RESULTS: Whatever the experimental group considered, body mass (P<0.01), body mass index (P<0.05) and fat mass (P<0.05) decreased significantly, whereas muscle strength and power increased significantly (P<0.05) after the intervention. CONCLUSION: Small body mass reductions after 3 weeks of energy-restricted diet combined with moderate aerobic and strength exercise are associated with significant improvements in upper and lower limb muscle strength and power and reduction of fat mass in severely obese women aged 61-75 years. Although the association of rGH or nandrolone undecanoate does not appear to exert additional effects on body composition and muscle performance attained by body mass reduction alone, further additional studies with larger study groups, different dosages and more prolonged periods are required for definitive conclusions to be drawn.
