Obtaining ultracold alkaline earth(-like) atoms in space encounters the problem of performing narrow-line laser cooling in microgravity environments ( μ -gEs). This paper reports an analysis of the magneto-optical trap (MOT) based on the narrow-line transition in 88 Sr, while paying special attention to the role of the gravity. This analysis suggests the MOTs based on narrow-line transitions cannot be cold and dense enough in a μ -gE. We thus propose a strategy: that one can use a dual-frequency MOT to realize a low-temperature, high density, and high transfer efficiency, narrow-line red MOT in μ -gEs.

Simulation of two-dimensional (2D) transverse laser cooling of Cs atomic beam from pyramidal magneto-optical trap atom funnel (PMOTAF) conceived for atom lithography is presented. The results show that both the minimum full width at half maximum (FWHM) and the maximum peak value of the spatial profile of the atomic beam occur at the frequency detuning of optical molasses equals to -0.5 Г. Moreover, for each frequency detuning, an increase in the intensity of the optical molasses leads to smaller FWHM and higher peak value. The not negligible role of gravity on the atomic beam of sub-thermal longitudinal velocity along the horizontal direction is that every atomic trajectory possesses a parabolic motion either before or after laser cooling which leads to a noticeable displacement of the peak value at the observation plane with respect to the starting point.

This review describes the production of atomic strontium samples at ultra-low temperature and at high phase-space density, and their possible use for physical studies and applications. We describe the process of loading a magneto-optical trap from an atomic beam and preparing the sample for high precision measurements. Particular emphasis is given to the applications of ultracold Sr samples, spanning from optical frequency metrology to force sensing at micrometer scale.
