The purpose of this paper is to provide findings for a thorough review of reliability, availability, and maintainability (RAM) analysis utilizing failure data from an ice cream industry. The case study shows how RAM analysis is very helpful in assessing maintenance intervals and in planning and organizing an effective maintenance strategy. RAM study was computed based on historical data gathered over a twelve-month period. Pareto analysis, descriptive statistics, trend, and serial correlation test of the data were conducted. The parameters for failure and repair data were computed for each machine and the complete ice cream manufacturing system. The RAM analysis assesses the current operations management and improves the quality, productivity, and performance of the line. It was found that: (a) preventive maintenance intervals for each machine and completed system for different reliability periods were calculated. (b) Two machines with the lowest reliabilities are the packaging machine and then on the freezer tunnel. The significance of these machines is vital and their maintenance must be thorough to avoid losses pertaining to quality and productivity, and (c) the worst maintainabilities occur at the exogenous machine, and on the ice cream machine, together with the complete production system. Moreover, as the RAM indices have been calculated to quantify and increase machines’ performance, production managers and engineers can easily evaluate the next moves and decisions made with respect to the function of the system.

The supplier selection problem has been discussed in literature within the supply chain management subject and it is extremely important due to its impact on the entire supply chain configuration, strategy and performance. This work presents a decision model based on the fuzzy analytic hierarchy process method and its application in a real case of maintenance supplier selection in a large Brazilian railway operator. Eight criteria were adopted - technical capacity, financial status, relationship, operations management, security management, infrastructure, historic performance and costs - for evaluating five potential suppliers. In the case study, both first and second ranked suppliers by the method have been selected by the company for providing the services and the model was adopted as a standard procedure within the organization for contracts over US$ 300,000.

Failure data were extracted from the report book of the case study company. These data were stratified and analysed.Data stratification was pivotal in the separation of failure data into smaller and more defined form based on a predetermined set of criteria. Filler system was found to have the highest percentage failure occurrences; hence a standby filler system became the best option. The study concluded that, although in a production/manufacturing system, downtime is inevitable but it can be limited to the planned downtime with respect to the typical Nigerian multinational bottling company.

Purpose As overall equipment effectiveness (OEE) is a metric to estimate equipment effectiveness of production systems, the purpose of this paper is to identify strategic management tools and techniques based on OEE assessment of the ice cream production line. Design/methodology/approach This paper presents the collection and the analysis of data for ice cream production under real working conditions. The data cover a period of eight months. A framework process to improve the OEE of an automated production system was proposed. Six major stoppage losses, i.e. equipment failure, setup and adjustment, idling and minor stoppage, reduced speed, defects in the process, and reduced yield, were examined with the help of Pareto analysis. In addition, the actual availability (A), performance efficiency (PΕ) and quality rate (QR) measures, together with the complete OEE for each working day, week and month of the production line were shown. Findings The main goal of the study is to identify major stoppage losses, in order to examine and improve the overall equipment efficiency (OEE) of the ice cream production line through the application of an adequate management, i.e. TPM approach. Based on the obtained results, maintenance management strategy and production planning have been suggested to improve their maintenance procedures and the productivity as well. Originality/value The proposed method can be applied to each automated production system. The main benefits of this method are the improvement of productivity, quality enhancement of products, the reduction of sudden breakdowns and the cost of maintenance. Moreover, the analysis provides a useful perspective and helps managers/engineers make better decisions on the operations management of the line, and suggestions for improvement were proposed and will be implemented accordingly.

Reliability is an important phase in durable system designs, specifically in the early phase of the product development. In this paper, a new methodology is proposed for complex systems’ design for reliability. Specific test and field failure data scarcity is evaluated here as a challenge to implement design for reliability of a new product. In the developed approach, modeling and simulation of the system are accomplished by using reliability block diagram (RBD) method. The generic data are corrected to account for the design and environment effects on the application. The integral methodology evaluates reliability of the system and assesses the importance of each component. In addition, the availability of the system was evaluated using Monte Carlo simulation. Available design alternatives with different components are analyzed for reliability optimization. Evaluating reliability of complex systems in competitive design attempts is one of the applications of this method. The advantage of this method is that it is applicable in early design phase where there is only limited failure data available. As a case study, horizontal drilling equipment is used for assessment of the proposed method. Benchmarking of the results with a system with more available failure and maintenance data verifies the effectiveness and performance quality of presented method.

Previous studies on health prognosis are exceedingly dependence on the failure data and sensor data of a single component of manufacturing systems, and the holistic health prognosis techniques applicable to whole manufacturing systems still remain a challenge due to its increasingly physical and functional complexity. Therefore, a generalized health prognosis method is presented based on the deep fusion of quality-oriented big data of operational process of manufacturing systems. First, the generalized connotation of manufacturing system health is explained from the aspects of the physical composition and functional characteristics of manufacturing systems, and the quality state task network is proposed to organize quality-oriented big operational data, which improve the state transparency of the manufacturing system and lay the foundation of holistic health prognosis. Second, key characterization parameters in quality state task network are defined. Specifically, the performance state is analyzed based on multistate characteristics by considering the effects of stochastic degradation processes; the product quality state is quantified by using a process model that is established based on monitoring and inspection data; and the task execution state is quantitatively described by analyzing the evolution of task demand among machines. Third, an integrated model is built by integrating the three above-mentioned states as two key indicators, namely, qualified degree and mission reliability, for the comprehensive prognosis of the health of manufacturing systems. Finally, the effectiveness of the proposed approach is verified with a case study on the health prognosis of a cylinder head manufacturing system.

The growth of the event sector is underpinned by the demand of organizing a business event.  Thus, it leads to an increase in economic and social impact. However, the problems from the growth of this sector potentially results from the use of several event materials, transportation and infrastructure development.  Organizing a green event is seen as one of the strategies to reduce the environmental impact.  Therefore, the aim of this paper is to explore the issues involved throughout the process of greening an event by applying Mair and Jago Model.  Semi-structured interviews were conducted with event managers from six Malaysia business event companies that encourage green practices during their event.  Findings suggest that impact, initiative, support and performance motivates event organizers in organizing a green event.  It has also been found that knowledge, resources and behaviour are the barriers faced by event organizers throughout the process of organizing a green event.  Based on the findings it appears that two important factors have emerged from the data collection and analysis that showed a deviation from the Mair and Jago Model, namely “impact” for the motivation element and “support” for the barrier element.  The main limitation of this study was the scope of the study; as it only focuses on business events.  However, as the main purpose of this study is to explore the issues of organizing a green event, it has been found that there are other issues need to be explored in other contexts and geographical area.  Apart from this, as this is a case study, it can only replicate according to the circumstances of this case study. However, this study can be generalized in terms of the theory that has emerged from it.  It is suggested that further research should explore more issues in other contexts and geographical areas.
