Shear-induced adhesion is one of the key properties for the gecko moving safely and quickly in a three-dimensional environment. The control strategies of such locomotion strongly relying on adhesion are still not well understood. In this study, we measured foot alignment and three-dimensional reaction forces of the single toes of the Tokay gecko running on the ground freely (gravity condition) and running in a situation where the gravity force was counterbalanced (reduced gravity condition). The forelimb rotated from the outward position to the front-facing position and the hindlimb rotated from the outward position to the rear-facing position, when running with balanced force, which indicated that the adhesive system was employed behaviorally through the modulation of the foot alignment. The toe was compressed and pulled in the gravity condition, but it was tensed and pulled in the reduced gravity condition. There was an approximately linear relationship between peak normal forces and the corresponding shear forces in both the reduced gravity condition (FN = −0.40FS − 0.008) and the gravity condition (FN = 2.70FS − 0.12). The footpad was compressed and pushed in the gravity condition, whereas it was tensed and pulled in the reduced gravity condition. There was an approximately linear relationship between peak normal forces and the corresponding shear forces in both the reduced gravity condition (FN = −0.39FS − 0.001) and in the gravity condition (FN = −2.80FS − 0.08). The shear-induced adhesion of the gecko footpad is controlled by the coupling of the normal force and shear forces: that is why in this system adhesion was shear-sensitive and friction was load-sensitive. Our measurements of single toe reaction forces also show that geckos control their footpad attachment using ‘toe rolling-in and gripping’ motion in both gravity and reduced gravity conditions.

AbstractOptical-based microfluidic cell sorting has become increasingly attractive for applications in life and environmental sciences due to its ability of sophisticated cell handling in flow. The majority of these microfluidic cell sorting devices employ two-dimensional fluid flow control strategies, which lack the ability to manipulate the position of cells arbitrarily for precise optical detection, therefore resulting in reduced sorting accuracy and purity. Although three-dimensional (3D) hydrodynamic devices have better flow-focusing characteristics, most lack the flexibility to arbitrarily position the sample flow in each direction. Thus, there have been very few studies using 3D hydrodynamic flow focusing for sorting. Herein, we designed a 3D hydrodynamic focusing sorting platform based on independent sheath flow-focusing and pressure-actuated switching. This design offers many advantages in terms of reliable acquisition of weak Raman signals due to the ability to precisely control the speed and position of samples in 3D. With a proof-of-concept demonstration, we show this 3D hydrodynamic focusing-based sorting device has the potential to reach a high degree of accuracy for Raman activated sorting.

The piaffe is an artificial, diagonally coordinated movement performed in the highest levels of dressage competition. The ground reaction forces (GRFs) of horses performing the piaffe do not appear to have been reported. Therefore, the objective of this study was to describe three-dimensional GRFs in ridden dressage horses performing the piaffe. In-ground force plates were used to capture fore and hindlimb GRF data from seven well-trained dressage horses. Peak vertical GRF was significantly higher in forelimbs than in the hindlimbs (7.39 ± 0.99 N/kg vs. 6.41 ± 0.64 N/kg; p < 0.001) with vertical impulse showing a trend toward higher forelimb values. Peak longitudinal forces were small with no difference in the magnitude of braking or propulsive forces between fore and hindlimbs. Peak transverse forces were similar in magnitude to longitudinal forces and were mostly directed medially in the hindlimbs. Both the intra- and inter-individual variability of longitudinal and transverse GRFs were high (coefficient of variation 25–68%). Compared with the other diagonal gaits of dressage horses, the vertical GRF somewhat shifted toward the hindlimbs. The high step-to-step variability of the horizontal GRF components is thought to reflect the challenge of balancing on one diagonal pair of limbs with no forward momentum.

The aim of this study was to evaluate through analytical calculation, two-dimensional elastic modeling, and three-dimensional plastic modeling, the bearing capacity and failure modes of composite hollow trusses bi-supported with a 15 meter span, varying the number of central Vierendeel panels. The study found the proportion span/3 - span/3 - span/3, as the ideal relationship for the truss - Vierendeel - truss lengths, because by increasing the proportion of the length occupied by the central Vierendeel panels, the new system loses stiffness and no longer supports the load stipulated in the project. Furthermore, they can start presenting excessive vertical displacements and insufficient resistance to external shear forces acting on the panels.

In this paper, some new developments to the packing optimization method based on the rubber band analogy are presented. This method solves packing problems by simulating the physical movements of a set of objects wrapped by a rubber band in the case of two-dimensional problems or by a rubber balloon in the case of three-dimensional problems. The objects are subjected to elastic forces applied by the rubber band to their vertices as well as reaction forces when contacts between objects occur. Based on these forces, objects translate or rotate until maximum compactness is reached. To improve the compactness further, the method is enhanced by adding two new operators: volume relaxation and temporary retraction. These two operators allow temporary volume (elastic energy) increase to get potentially better packing results. The method is implemented and applied for three-dimensional arbitrary shape objects.

In industry, workers perform tasks requiring both lifting and lowering. During concentric lifting, the muscles are shortening as the force is being generated. Conversely, the muscle lengthens while generating force during eccentric lowering. While research on various lifting tasks is extensive, there has been limited research performed to evaluate the lowering tasks. Most of the research that does exist on lowering has investigated muscle activity and trunk strength. None of these studies have investigated spinal loading. The current study estimated the effects of lifting and lowering on spinal loads and predicted moments imposed on the spine. Ten subjects performed both eccentric and concentric lifts under sagittally symmetric conditions. The tasks were performed under isokinetic trunk velocities of 5, 10, 20, 40, and 80 deg/s while holding a box with weights of 9.1, 18.2, and 27.3 kg. Spinal loads and predicted moments in three dimensional space were estimated by an EMG-assisted model which has been adjusted to incorporate the artifacts of eccentric lifting. Eccentric strength was found to be 56 percent greater than during concentric lifting. The lowering tasks produced significantly higher compression forces but lower anterior-posterior shear forces than the concentric lifting tasks. The differences in the spinal loads between the two lifting tasks were attributed to the internal muscle forces and unequal moments resulting from differences in the lifting path of the box. Thus, the differences between the lifting tasks resulted from different lifting styles associated with eccentric and concentric movements

Irish dance has evolved in aesthetics that lead to greater physical demands on dancers' bodies. Irish dancers must land from difficult moves without letting their knees bend or heels touch the ground, causing large forces to be absorbed by the body. The majority of injuries incurred by Irish dancers are due to overuse (79.6%). The purpose of this study was to determine loads on the body of female Irish dancers, including peak force, rise rate of force, and impulse, in eight common Irish hard shoe and soft shoe dance movements. It was hypothesized that these movements would produce different ground reac- tion force (GRF) characteristics. Sixteen female Irish dancers were recruited from the three highest competitive levels. Each performed a warm-up, reviewed the eight movements, and then performed each movement three times on a force plate, four in soft shoes and four in hard shoes. Ground reaction forces were measured using a three-dimensional force plate recording at 1,000 Hz. Peak force, rise rate, and vertical impulse were calculated. Peak forces normalized by each dancer's body weight for each of these variables were significantly different between move- ments and shoe types [F(15, 15)= 65.4, p < 0.01; F(15, 15) = 65.0, p < 0.01; and F(15, 15) = 67.4, p < 0.01, respectively]. The variable years of experience was not correlated with peak force, rise rate, or impulse (p > 0.40). It is concluded that there was a large range in GRF characteristics among the eight movements studied. Understanding the force of each dance step will allow instructors to develop training routines that help dancers adapt gradually to the high forces experienced in Irish dance training and competitions, thereby limiting the potential for overuse injuries.

When the load acting on a mechanical structure is greater than the yield strength of the material, the contact surface will undergo plastic deformation. Cumulative plastic deformation has an important influence on the lifespan of mechanical parts. This article presents a three-dimensional semi-analytical model based on the conjugate gradient method and fast Fourier transform algorithm, with the aim of studying the characteristic parameters of the contact region between a rigid ellipsoid and elasto-plastic half-space. Moreover, normal forces and tangential traction were considered, as well as the contact pressure resulting from various sliding speeds and friction coefficients. The contact pressure, effective plastic strain, von Mises stress, and residual stress were measured and shown to increase with increasing sliding velocity. Finally, when the friction coefficient, contact pressure, and effective plastic strain are increased, the von Mises stress is also shown to increase, whereas the residual stress decreases.

There are many PE(Pre-Erection) Blocks in open areas of the shipyard, which are supported by the wooden, concrete, or steel supports. Their position and numbers are decided on a basis of the workers’ experiences. Recently, many shipyards have been making PE blocks with various shape and weight distribution because of the variety of kinds of ships and their building technology. Seriously, they are treating blocks which have not been experienced. In order to evaluate the reliability of all support plans of PE Blocks in such situation, many man hours (MH) are consumed, and the special knowledge and technology about structural analysis are required. We proposed how to conveniently and quickly evaluate the structural safety on PE block supports and developed an application system to implement the evaluation process with three dimensional part models of the PE block and their weight information. The evaluation is based on the simplification to a grillage model of a PE block and its grillage analysis. The load distribution on the grillage model is calculated by two approaches. The first is that the load distribution on the grillage nodes are estimated with the real weight and the center of gravity of each part of a PE block, which can be provided from design databases of the shipyard. The other is that the load distribution is optimally estimated only with the weight and the center of gravity of sub blocks of a PE block. The latter is useful in the case that block information of mother ships can be obtained without the detail design of the PE block. The integrated system has been comprehensively implemented in order to make the grillage model from the three dimensional CAD models of the PE block and their weight information, and to perform the grillage analysis for the reaction forces on the block supports. In the application program, the grillage model can be automatically built from CAD models of PE block. Also the grillage can be modified by inserting, splitting, and deleting a beam element.
