This study investigated the use of glutathione as a marker to establish a correlation between plasma parameters and the resultant liquid chemistry from two distinct sources to predefined biological outcomes. Two different plasma sources were operated at parameters that resulted in similar biological responses: cell viability, mitochondrial activity, and the cell surface display of calreticulin. Specific glutathione modifications appeared to be associated with biological responses elicited by plasma. These modifications were more pronounced with increased treatment time for the European Cooperation in Science and Technology Reference Microplasma Jet (COST-Jet) and increased frequency for the dielectric barrier discharge and were correlated with more potent biological responses. No correlations were found when cells or glutathione were exposed to exogenously added long-lived species alone. This implied that short-lived species and other plasma components were required for the induction of cellular responses, as well as glutathione modifications. These results showed that comparisons of medical plasma sources could not rely on measurements of long-lived chemical species; rather, modifications of biomolecules (such as glutathione) might be better predictors of cellular responses to plasma exposure.

This work aims to assess the spatial and temporal variations of four biomarkers activities and to integrate their biological responses in a battery using the gastropod Phorcus turbinatus. The monitoring was carried out during the period between April 2014 and January 2015 at six stations along the northern and the northeastern coasts of Tunisia. The Fulton condition factor was estimated and the activities of catalase, acetylcholinesterase and glutathione-S-transferase were evaluated by spectrophotometry. A multi-biomarker battery approach was used to assess ecosystems’ condition and to identify environmental impacts on the organisms. The results suggest that the enzymatic activities of CAT and GST depend especially on seasons. As for AChE activity, it was similar between seasons and stations. The values of the integrated biological response were maximal at Jarzouna in summer and at Sidi Daoued in winter, indicating the presence of severe stressors suffered by the organisms. This perturbation may be due to the enrichment of the waters by xenobiotics, namely polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons, insecticides, phosphate wastes, PCBs and pesticides. Thus, P. turbinatus seems to be a good bioindicator of chemical pollution, constituting an adequate tool for a bio-monitoring program.

Carbon powders exhibit electrical conductivity that causes the powders to agglomerate due to the applied electrostatic forces and discharges capacitance when used for surface treatments with plasma sources. To avoid this obstacle, a non-direct method is used with active gas that is generated through plasma. This active gas is in contact with the carbon powder so that the hydrophilic characteristics are formed. It is the carboxyl COO− functional group that causes hydrophilic improvement and it is shown to increase in the carbon surface after soft oxidation. The wettability of carbon powder gradually improves with more plasma treatment time. This is shown through a simple water dispersion test. Eventually, the dispersed aqueous solution gradually separates the powder, which either floats or sinks. The sample treated for 60 min is shown to continuously sustain dispersibility in water over a long period of time.

Interleukin-11 (IL-11) is a polyfunctional cytokine whose biological actions require a specific IL-11 receptor (IL-11R) and the transmembrane transducer gp130. Here we report the production of a soluble form of the murine IL-11R and demonstrate that it interacts with IL-11 ligand with high affinity. The affinity of IL-11 alone for gp130 is below the level of detection, but a complex of IL-11 and soluble IL-11R interacts with gp130 with high affinity. The addition of soluble IL-11R potentiates the effects of exogenous IL-11 in cells that are normally responsive to IL-11. A biological response to IL-11 can be reconstituted in BAF cells transfected with gp130 by addition of IL-11 and soluble IL-11R. These findings show that the cytoplasmic domain of the IL-11R is not required for the biological effects of IL-11 and that a complex of IL-11 and IL-11R mediates signalling by association with gp130.

Study aim: The aim of this study was to assess the effects of whole body cryotherapy on the plasma viscosity and fibrinogen in women with rheumatoid arthritis. Study group: The study groups consisted of 10 womens with rheumatoid arthritis, aged 57.2 ± 9.4, who underwent systemic cryotherapy treatments (3 min treatment time, -120°C chamber temperature, 10 treatment sessions, 5 times a week). Their average body height was 165.5 ± 4.6 cm, weight 68.5 ± 4.9 kg and BMI 24.8 ± 2.2 kg/m2. In order to analyse plasma parameters, venous blood samples were drawn from the participants of the study twice. The first study was held on the day of beginning treatments and the second test was conducted after a series of 10 treatments. Methodology: The viscosity of the blood plasma was determined in the viscometer (type D-52159 Roetgen, Myrenne Co., Germany). Determination of plasma fibrinogen was performed using the Bio-Ksel, Chrom – 7 camera. Results: Analysing the average values of plasma viscosity and fibrinogen in women with rheumatoid arthritis before and after whole body cryotherapy, no statistically significant differences were found. Conclusions: Regular usage of cryotherapy treatments (whole body cryotherapy) not affect the levels of fibrinogen and plasma viscosity in women with rheumatoid arthritis.
