Junction temperature (Tj) and current have important effects on light-emitting diode (LED) properties. Therefore, the electroluminescence (EL) spectra of blue and green LEDs were investigated in a Tj range of 120–373 K and in a current range of 80–240 mA based on accurate real-time measurements of Tj using an LED with a built-in sensor unit. Two maxima of the emission peak energy with changing Tj were observed for the green LED, while the blue LED showed one maximum. This was explained by the transition between the donor-bound excitons (DX) and free excitons A (FXA) in the green LED. At low temperatures, the emission peak energy, full width at half maximum (FWHM), and radiation power of the green LED increase rapidly with increasing current, while those of the blue LED increase slightly. This is because when the strong spatial potential fluctuation and low exciton mobility in the green LED is exhibited, with the current increasing, more bonded excitons are found in different potential valleys. With a shallower potential valley and higher exciton mobility, excitons are mostly bound around the potential minima. The higher threshold voltage of the LEDs at low temperatures may be due to the combined effects of the band gap, dynamic resistance, piezoelectric polarization, and electron-blocking layer (EBL).

ABSTRACTWe report on the effect of thermal annealing on the photoluminescence properties of a Ga0.65In0.35N0.02As0.98/GaAs single quantum well. Thermal annealing is shown to decrease the strong nitrogen-induced localization effects observed at low temperatures and to reduce the full width at half maximum of the emission peak. It also induces a strong blue shift of the emission peak energy, which is thought not to arise from an In-Ga interdiffusion alone, as it is much larger than in a nitrogen-free reference single quantum well.

The excitation power and temperature dependence of the photoluminescence (PL) and electroluminescence (EL) spectra were studied in green InGaN/GaN multiple quantum well (MQW)-based light-emitting diodes (LED). An examination of the PL-325, PL-405, and EL spectra at identical optical or electrical generation rates at room temperature showed that the normalized spectra exhibited different characteristic peaks. In addition, the temperature behavior of the peak energy was S-shaped for the PL-405 spectrum, while it was V-shaped for the EL spectrum. These measurement results demonstrate that the excitation source can affect the carrier dynamics about the generation (injection), transfer, and distribution of carriers.

The light-emitting diode (LED) has been widely used in the food industry, and its application has been focused on microbial sterilization, specifically using blue-LED. The investigation has been recently extended to characterize the biotic and abiotic (photodynamic) effects of different wavelengths. Here, we investigated LED effects on kimchi fermentation. Kimchi broths were treated with three different colored-LEDs (red, green, and blue) or kept in the dark as a control. Multiomics was applied to evaluate the microbial taxonomic composition using 16S rRNA gene amplicon sequencing, and the metabolomic profiles were determined using liquid chromatography–Orbitrap mass spectrometry. Cell viability was tested to determine the potential cytotoxicity of the LED-treated kimchi broths. First, the amplicon sequencing data showed substantial changes in taxonomic composition at the family and genus levels according to incubation (initial condition vs. all other groups). The differences among the treated groups (red-LED (RLED), green-LED (GLED), blue-LED (BLED), and dark condition) were marginal. The relative abundance of Weissella was decreased in all treated groups compared to that of the initial condition, which coincided with the decreased composition of Lactobacillus. Compositional changes were relatively high in the GLED group. Subsequent metabolomic analysis indicated a unique metabolic phenotype instigated by different LED treatments, which led to the identification of the LED treatment-specific and common compounds (e.g., luteolin, 6-methylquinoline, 2-hydroxycinnamic acid, and 9-HODE). These results indicate that different LED wavelengths induce characteristic alterations in the microbial composition and metabolomic content, which may have applications in food processing and storage with the aim of improving nutritional quality and the safety of food.

This paper concerns the problem of modelling electrical, thermal and optical properties of multi-colour power light-emitting diodes (LEDs) situated on a common PCB (Printed Circuit Board). A new form of electro-thermo-optical model of such power LEDs is proposed in the form of a subcircuit for SPICE (Simulation Program with Integrated Circuits Emphasis). With the use of this model, the currents and voltages of the considered devices, their junction temperature and selected radiometric parameters can be calculated, taking into account self-heating phenomena in each LED and mutual thermal couplings between each pair of the considered devices. The form of the formulated model is described, and a manner of parameter estimation is also proposed. The correctness and usefulness of the proposed model are verified experimentally for six power LEDs emitting light of different colours and mounted on an experimental PCB prepared by the producer of the investigated devices. Verification was performed for the investigated diodes operating alone and together. Good agreement between the results of measurements and computations was obtained. It was also proved that the main thermal and optical parameters of the investigated LEDs depend on a dominant wavelength of the emitted light.

Nowadays, signal lights are made using light-emitting diode arrays (LEDs). These devices are extremely energy efficient and have a very long lifetime. Unfortunately, especially for yellow/amber LEDs, the intensity of the light is closely related to the junction temperature. This makes it difficult to design signal lights to be used in naval, road, railway, and aeronautical sectors, capable of fully respecting national and international regulations. Furthermore, the limitations prescribed by the standards must be respected in a wide range of temperature variations. In other words, in the signaling apparatuses, a system that varies the light intensity emitted according to the operating temperature is useful/necessary. In this paper, we propose a simple and effective solution. In order to adjust the intensity of the light emitted by the LEDs, we use an LED identical to those used to emit light as a temperature sensor. The proposed system was created and tested in the laboratory. As the same device as the ones to be controlled is used as the temperature sensor, the system is very stable and easy to set up.

White-light-emitting diodes (WLED) based on yttrium aluminum garnet (YAG) phosphors sintered with glass (PiG) and with silicone (PiS) are compared in terms of their light properties, temperature properties and reliability.The complete YAG phosphor was doped with an encapsulant traditional WLED (PiS WLED), and the WLED was covered with PiG (PiG WLED). PiG was made by sintering glass powder and YAG phosphor at the ratio of 87:13 (%), and the correlated color temperature (CCT) was 5564 K. The CCT of the PiG WLED with the YAG doping concentration of 8.5 wt.% approximated 5649 K. The initial light output of the PiG WLED was 6.4% lower than that of the PiS WLED. Under 1008 h and 350 mA aging, PiG WLED and PiS WLED’ light output, CCT and color rendering index variation rates were all within 1%. In the saturated vapor-pressure test, no sample exhibited red ink infiltration, light nor peeling between the encapsulant and the lead-frame. Compared with that of the PiS WLED, the junction temperature of the PiG WLED reduced from 88.4 °C to 81.3 °C. Thermal resistance dropped from 37.4 °C/W to 35.6 °C/W. The PiG WLED presented a better CIE (Commission Internationale de l’Eclairage) 1931 chromaticity coordinate (x,y) concentration and thermal properties than the PiS WLED.

A Bi3+-doped Cs2SnCl6 exhibits photoluminescence at around 456 nm and a photoluminescence quantum yield of 31%. The blue LED based on the Bi3+-doped Cs2SnCl6 phosphor exhibits a long life of 120 hours and a CIE color coordinates of (0.14, 0.11).
