Considering the safety of synthetic antioxidants, more and more natural antioxidants have been developed and utilized in foods. This study aimed to screen out a natural antioxidant combination from many antioxidants, which could significantly affect the oxidation stability of anchovy oil, while Plackett–Burman design (PBD) methodology was employed in this screening. According to the statistical results of this design, sesamol, dihydromyricetin, teapolyphenol, and rosemary acid were four significant parameters on the oxidation stability of anchovy oil. Moreover, dihydromyricetin presented the best antioxidant effect among nine kinds of selected antioxidants when they were used alone in anchovy oil. Meanwhile, a combination including sesamol (0.02%), teapolyphenol (0.02%). and rosemary acid (0.02%) was adopted, and its antioxidant ability was similar to that of tert-butylhydroquinone (TBHQ). Additionally, phytic acid as a synergist was used and combined with sesamol, and the antioxidant ability of this combination was better than that of TBHQ. This study presented a reference for the industrial applications of natural antioxidants and synergists in anchovy oil.

 The aim of this study was to evaluate the synthesis of pectinase from Penicillium brasilianum in shake flasks and address their potential for industrial applications. A Plackett-Burman design followed by a complete second order design were used for the screening of most important factors and to maximize the polygalacturonase activity, respectively. Maximum polygalacturonase activity was 52.8 U mL-1 at 48 hours of bioproduction. The kinetic evaluation for substrate consumption showed that 42% total organic carbon, 52 nitrogen, 23 magnesium, and 60% potassium were consumed. The crude enzyme complex was used on commercial mango juice clarification, and, at a 0.5% concentration (v v-1) reduced viscosity by 10%, turbidity by 12% and clarification by 23%. Therefore, the results presented in this study could provide valuable and beneficial information for the food and enzyme industries (juice) as well as being a new landmark to microbiology by providing essential knowledge on P. brasilianum growing needs.

The issue of low solubility and bioavailability poses a significant challenge for most of the drug candidates for oral delivery. Liquisolid, a recently evolved technique for dissolution enhancement, can dodge these barriers. The purpose of this research was to increase the solubility of poorly soluble drug cholecalciferol by liquisolid technique. The cholecalciferol’s solubility studies were performed in a mixture of Polysorbate 80 and PEG 400 in different ratios (1:1, 1:2, 2:1, 1:3, and 3:1). Maximum solubility was observed in a 1:2 ratio. There were changes in the X-ray diffractogram and shifting of the endothermic peak in DSC from 85oC to 146oC, which indicated the drug’s conversion into an amorphous form. The liquisolid form was adsorbed on the carrier material and compressed. The optimization was done by using Plackett Burman Design with Design-Expert software. It was observed that the drugs release profile of the optimized formulation was better than the generic product and was comparable to Divisun tablets 2000 I.U (Innovator).

The genus Cephalaria, belonging to the Caprifoliaceae family, is a rich source of interesting secondary metabolites, including mainly saponins which display a variety of biological activities, such as immunomodulatory, antimicrobial and hemolytic effects. Besides these compounds, flavonoids and phenolic acids were identified in Cephalaria species. Cephalaria is employed in traditional medicine e.g., to cure cardiac and lung diseases, rheumatism, and regulate menstruation. In this review we focus on the phenolic compound composition and antioxidative activity of Cephalaria species. The antioxidant effect can be explained by flavonoids present in all parts of these plants. However, future efforts should concentrate more on in vitro and in vivo studies and also on clinical trials in order to confirm the possibility of using these plants as natural antioxidants for the pharmacology, food or cosmetic industries.

We proposed an experimental design of a microbial bioassay of dichotomous response (positive or negative) using Bacillus subtilis BGA for the detection of sulfonamide residues. In the first stage, the bioassay response time was reduced to 6 h by increasing the spore concentration of B. subtilis. Then, the effects of spore, indicator, trimethoprim (TMP) concentration, and volume of the culture medium were examined with a Plackett Burman design (2<sup>4-1</sup>). Finally, the effect of TMP concentration on the method detection capabilities and specificity was analysed using a logistic model with interaction. The detection capabilities of sulfonamides in milk are close to the MRLs when using 500 mg/l of TMP in the culture medium of the bioassay. It is concluded that the experimental design techniques and a logistic regression model can be used to design successfully a dichotomous response bioassay.
